Irritating instrument exclusion news now, with IGN revealing unpleasant information to those eager to start a fake band in presence of the PlayStation 3. The article notes that the PS3's Guitar Hero III controller, the Les Paul, does not currently function with Rock Band. The Red Octane peripheral is recognized as a controller and works for menu selections, but it does not register as an instrument. Well, that certainly sticks it to the man... where the man is Harmonix's touting of Rock Band as a music "platform."
Giving the developer the benefit of the doubt, one could speculate that this inconsistency will be dealt with in a downloadable patch. After all, the Xbox 360's Les Paul works just fine with the Xbox 360 variant of Rock Band -- this lack of peripheral support would only be rendered worse if it wasn't even consistent across systems. With no standalone Rock Band instruments available until 2008, the only way of completing the PS3 experience as things stand would be to purchase the $180 bundle again (as if finding one wasn't hard enough). Between your best friends and Harmonix, someone's gonna have to do you a favor.
We'll let you know when we hear more.
[Thanks, M@]

First it has nothin to do with sony its cause red octane/activision was so rushed to put a ps3 version of gh for all of us wit only a ps3. that they took no time at all to think about using bluetooth which is a wireless protocol. And went with a dongle which was super retarded guess they cared more bout savin a few bucks then making a good strong product.
BUT AGAIN NOT SONY'S PROBLEM I CALLED SONY IN HOPES TO GET A ANSWER AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD BE MORE THEN HAPPY TO HAVE SENT THEM A WORKABLE PROTOCOL OF THE BLUETOOTH.

I love Harmonix and all, and I'm excited as hell for Rock Band...but this is a major oversight. I can't believe they missed something like this.
I forsee a patch in the near future to remedy this problem...either that or Harmonix sends everyone who buys the standalone game a free guitar.

Major oversight my eye. How are they supposed to insure compatibility with their biggest competitor?
Do you think Red Octane was just opening the cupboards and offering them Les Pauls like candy?
Considering GH3 went out of its way to block non-approved controllers from being used, I'm not willing to put the blame on Harmonix for this one.

well you could buy the whole package and 3 bonus standalone games, then give 1 instrument and 1 game to 3 of your friends and keep one of each yourself

Guitar Hero III for the PS3 uses a dongle for the guitar. You can't expect Rock Band to include a driver for the GHIII guitar dongle.
The 360's GHIII guitar works with the 360's native wireless system. No dongle required. No driver required.

They don't use the same dongles. So they need different drivers.
If they all used Bluetooth, it would be fine. But I suspect it is cost prohibitive.

I'm sure someone will find a way to make them work that involves plugging it into the USB port, holding in the power button on the PS3 for 10 seconds, waiting for it to beep 3 times, then plugging it with another USB cord, and lastly sacrificing 3 goats or something of that nature for the PS3 to work with the GH3 guitars.

MS Certification doesn't seem like such a bitch now does it? LOL @ the haters! Let's hope PS3 Firmware 2.0X will fix this "issue."

You know what? Microsoft's certification process IS a bitch. This isn't Sony's fault, its Red Octane/GH3 being lazy and not bothering to try using the PS3's bluetooth AND and oversight by Harmonix by not including a driver for an "open" platform game that is SUPPOSED to work with 3rd party guitars.

What the funk?
I hope Harmonix rectifies this with a patch. I have Rock Band (PS3) coming tomorrow, and I'd like to use my GH3 guitar with it instead of my old wired guitars.
This is really odd to me that this doesn't work because I can use my PS3 GH3 guitar on Windows and MacOS, why couldn't Rock Band PS3 support it?

Um, next time Guitar Hero III loads, read that legal text that comes up. The last clause is a statement that you agree to only use guitars provided by Activision.
I think it's pretty crappy especially since Red Octane made their name originally by making unlicensed third-party controllers for other rhythm games. I guess they're too good for that now.

Even the Rock Band game tutorial for guitar states (in a very sarcastic tone) that they RECOMMEND RB guitars but that "other" guitars will work. Until they provide an adapter for my real guitar, one would assume that statement would be referring to Guitar Hero!

you guys are absolutely fools for blaming this on SONY. it is in fact Neversoft and Harmonix's fault for not utilizing bluetooth! It couldn't have been that hard to dissect a ps3 dualshock 3 controller and just lay the buttons further apart and put into a guitar shaped casing and presto you have a BLUETOOTH ps3 controller. That works the same way any controller would. The bs that both companies gave that they didnt have enough time or SONY wouldn't comply with them is like i said BS. Its bluetooth for gods sake, its a standard wireless protocol! Sony didnt do anything special to make it their own type! nonetheless i hope they make a patch to resolve this issue. Because if they dont, I still wont pay for another guitar.

Well, considering that my GH3 controller won't even play with GH3, I can hardly blame rock band for not playing with it as well. The GH3 controller for the PS3 is just plain garbage; it even feels/looks cheaper than the original PS2 one. At least Rock Band works; now I just have to find a PS2-to-PS3 adapter I guess, for bass, and forget GH3.

I have a question. If I get an adaptor for my PS3 so that it can play with a PS2 controller, can I use a GH2 guitar for the PS3 Rock Band?
