Nega-review: Rock Band
"If you're looking for another game to whittle away the hours perfecting guitar parts by yourself, Rock Band likely won't live up to your expectations." (2) "Rock Band's singing and guitar campaigns aren't as developed ... as standalone games like SingStar or Guitar Hero." (8) The game "isn't great if you're playing by yourself. ... it's not nearly as compelling going through songs with a single instrument." (3) "There just isn't as big of a sense of accomplishment as you climb the ranks without all the little animations and feedback you got on Guitar Hero 3." (5) Yes, "the Solo Tours lack the animations and story elements of Guitar Hero's solo campaign, which make them slightly less interesting to play by yourself." (8) "Expect more than a few awkward silences if you're by yourself." (3) "Guitar Hero is better if you're playing alone." (5)
"The actual online play, honestly, isn't quite as crucial a component as you'd think." (3) "One omission is online cooperative play." (7) "For the full co-op career mode, you have to play offline. That's disappointing." (9) Yup, "you can't do co-op career online - a major disappointment." (1) That's right, "the Band World Tour mode is not available online, and that's a shame." (5) What's more, "you may hear some out-of-sync bleed through the headset ... and the singer's signal won't be transmitted due to lag: the other players will hear the pre-recorded vocal track." (1)
A "major problem [is] the smaller track lists when compared to Guitar Hero." (4) "There are only 45 licensed tracks, and not all of them are great songs. ... In fact "some of the songs in Rock Band just plain suck (Coheed and Cambria, seriously?)." (2) "You are going to see repeats often." (2) and "it's disappointing having to repeat songs so often along the way." (3) In one five-hour stretch, our band ... must have played Nirvana's 'In Bloom' six times. By the end, our love for Nirvana's classic had wilted." (2)
"Another element that might not immediately thrill people is the graphics." (1) No, "the visuals may not strike players right away". (7). "Harmonix has opted for a grainy visual style, bathing the slightly cartoony characters in intense stage lighting." (1) "I do wish there had been a little more focus on the overall package of graphics than the movements and lip-synching of the characters." (4) "GHIII has higher quality textures and models." (8)"Rock Band doesn't offer the insanely intense ... challenge of Guitar Hero III." (2) No, "guitar and bass never approach the level of challenge set before them in Guitar Hero." (3) "You aren't getting songs with the craziest guitar solos" (8) and players "may be in for a shock when they find themselves lazily strumming chords or picking through simple arpeggios." (7) "Those who have been shredding and mastering the Guitar Hero games will find that these parts don't come close to offering the same challenge ... any expert won't be pressed hard with these note layouts." (2) "The note charts for Rock Band tend to be a little easier, and ... they just don't flow quite as well as the Guitar Hero games." (5) "In fact, if you are thinking about purchasing Rock Band solely for the guitar portion of the game you had better think twice -- Guitar Hero III is your game." (6)
Speaking of the guitar, "the Stratocaster guitar controller feels a bit like a toy." (1) "It will take some getting used to if you've played many hours on another controller [and] even after getting used to it the guitar never feels as good as the alternative -- especially on Xbox 360 where you're tethered down with a wire on the Fender model." (2) "It can be a little harder to slide from button to button on the Rock Band Fender" (5) and "one friend thought the strum bar was a complete deal-killer, and after a few hours of trying to get used to it, he shrugged and went back to the Guitar Hero guitar." (5)
Yep, "the strumming feels less solid than the Les Paul and the buttons aren't raised enough, which makes moving between them a bit more difficult." (8) What's more, "the Braille-like bumps on the middle button are too subtle, so it's hard to know where you are on the fretboard sometimes." (1) "The new switch to adjust the effects during solos in Rock Band is a ... gimmick" (2) and "we kept bumping the five-way effects switch accidentally." (1) "The new guitar controller feels foreign, with its soft-pressing, inset buttons - it's not the clicky, tactile stuff we're used to." (9) "For my money, I'll take the Guitar Hero III wireless Les Paul controller over the Rock Band guitar." (2)
The drums, for their part, are "not indestructible." (1) "During my play time, I had a pre-production foot pedal snap in half during a particularly driving session of Bon Jovi's Wanted Dead or Alive on expert. ... The kick pedal is surprisingly thin around the main pressure point in the middle where the spring meets the underside surface of the pedal itself. ... It definitely looks like the most vulnerable part of the entire drum set." (2) What's more, "the wire that connects the pedal to the drum set fits into the back of the drum pads, but it doesn't have a very good connection." (5) "Worries about the drum controller's durability remain." (6)As for the drumming gameplay, "it's ... sometimes difficult to see the orange kick bar on the note scroll as soon as overdrive begins because it's accompanied by a glittery yellowish-orange splash on the screen, which somewhat conceals the orange of the kick note. Let me tell you, it really sucks to miss a note right at the beginning of your overdrive passage because it's difficult to see." (2) And "honestly, if you have any rhythm at all, the easy setting on the drums will frustrate you more than the hard setting. Feeling the vibes of the music on the easy setting will cause you to fail repeatedly ... you will find yourself struggling to find the rhythm." (4)
The "vocal game is more about accuracy than passion." (1) "The person holding the mic is not included in any of the unity sections; they are not key to any of the big endings that offer massive bonus points ... there's no question that the singer is not always on equal footing with the other players." (2) "You activate star power by singing through the colored sections, which is slightly on the annoying side; unlike the guitars, you can't activate your star power at any time." (5)
Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends (the nitpicking): the Joystiq Nega-review. We've taken nine reviews worth of small complaints about Rock Band and compiled them into a review that makes the game look like the worst thing since Britney's Dance Beat. We do this, as always, not because we hate critically-praised games, but because we know no game is perfect and that the negatives can be hard to spot in largely positive reviews. (This time around, we're also offering 'sour grapes' solace to those unfortunate souls who can't get the game before it inevitably sells out).
It should be noted that while many reviewers complained about the new guitar bundled with Rock Band, most Guitar Hero axes work perfectly with the game, so these complaints can be bypassed. It should also be noted that Harmonix is hard at work on a patch to make the Band World Tour playable online, which should come as a welcome addition to many reviewers. And, as a final note, most of the reviewer complaints about the single player game melted away when there were two or more people in a room playing, so if you have a bunch of friends that are ready to rock, just ignore that section.

*dies in disappointment*
baby sea tuna @ Nov 20th 2007 8:18AM
Oh, I am so not buying this game now!
...oh, wait...
Yobari @ Nov 20th 2007 8:24AM
"the Stratocaster guitar controller feels a bit like a toy."
And that's what it is... a toy. Seriously, how are we supposed to have any respect for the reviewers that say such stupid things?
jimy @ Nov 20th 2007 8:48AM
+1 for my 8 48 AM laugh.
Boss Tempo @ Nov 20th 2007 9:42AM
+2 Because when I get into my automobile this morning, it feels like a car.
Jake @ Nov 20th 2007 11:29AM
But when you turn it on, does it return the favor?
Reuben @ Nov 20th 2007 11:38AM
I admit that they could have chosen a better word besides "toy" but the guitar neck feels like I could crush in two seconds. It's not all that sturdy. I'm undecided about Rock Band, but if I do get it I wont get that huge bundle.
Bunnyears @ Nov 20th 2007 2:45PM
Well, you certainly don't have to respect me, but I'll clarify anyway.
It feels like a toy in comparison to the GH guitar, which feels like a more sturdy game controller. I felt the plastic shell felt more lightweight and was made of a different style of plastic, one I would equate more with toys than controllers.
Mp3 @ Nov 20th 2007 8:43AM
Waited for 12 AM launch at Best Buy and snagged a PS3 version. Pretty much all of the negative reviews are negated by the fact that everyone who plays this will also have GHIII. Just play GHIII if you want to play alone, RB with friends.
Also, I hope the songs that are made available online for both games don't overlap - I want as much variety as possible!
jimy @ Nov 20th 2007 8:48AM
So if you don't have friends you shouldn't buy rock band? Or if you buy rock band people will suddenly become your friends?
edgore @ Nov 20th 2007 10:45AM
People will suddenly become your friends, but they will make you play bass...
John Z @ Nov 20th 2007 8:50AM
Picked up the 360 version immediately upon waking. My drums have a bad blue pad, but other than that, I'm digging it. So, yeah. Add that to the 'bad' column.
Tiptup300 @ Nov 21st 2007 10:47AM
a single "n" could have really made that sound bad...
Ghen @ Nov 20th 2007 8:52AM
nega reviews make my head explode.. but I did get to the 3rd paragraph so I guess I'm getting used to it ;)
jsn @ Nov 20th 2007 8:52AM
I still don't understand how people think that GH3 is so incredibly difficult. Granted, I would consider myself well above average at the game, but I was disappointed in it. They nerfed the overall gameplay to make it easier and then tried to up the difficulty by over-using 3-button chords and in some cases, having you play notes that aren't even being played in the real songs. Just because the last set on expert is nearly impossible to get through, that doesn't mean that the game as a whole is challenging.
To me GH3 feels like a cash in game. Activision bought it and paid a company to continue it for the money. You can tell the company that made it, while doing a fine job, just doesn't have the same level of knowledge about it. You can tell that Harmonix had people charting the songs that actually knew what it felt like to play the songs. They try to replicate the feel of playing the song and they never really forced difficulty on you. I also never felt that Harmonix put songs in the game because they got paid to do so. I can't say the same for activision/harmonix.
While out of the box, rock band might not have any finger burning guitar tracks, I'm 100% sure that they will address this via DLC by giving us plenty of songs that showcase all the various instruments. The metallica pack is already making this reality.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Nov 20th 2007 9:47AM
How is the metallica pack? Is it up?
Unfortunately, I'll have to wait to own this game until christmas, as I already know my parents bought it for me.
Naz @ Nov 20th 2007 9:03AM
"Rock Band's singing and guitar campaigns aren't as developed ... as standalone games like SingStar..."
This reviewer has never played Singstar. Singstar *has* no campaign of any sort, no tiers, or organization other than all the songs being available in alphabetical order from the start.
Are there any reviews by a music focused magazine or website? I think they would have a better clue than most gaming websites after comments such as the one above and IGN's failure of a written or video review. "Umm..the guitar is bad. Everyone agrees with me..." - Hilary who does not provide any reasons for disliking the guitar.
Plus, what is it with reviewers slapping RB's solo tour mode with any of the instruments? More or less it is the same set-up as their previous work with GH and GHII which you work your way down a setlist; how did GHIII not get slapped with a 6/10 if this is such a crime against humanity?
Axela @ Nov 20th 2007 9:20AM
I got it last night at the best buy in Sunrise, FL. There were about 40 people there. I set everything up and banged the drums till the wee hours. I can tell it's gonna further wreck my free time planning for the next few months. The drums are fantastic. The guitar is well made, but it probably weighs about half what my wireless gisbon weighs and thus has the feeling of being cheap. When playing songs on expert I found it weird using the fret buttons, and the strum button has no real click to it like the GH controller. It'll take some time to get used to it given the countless hours I've played on the GH controller.
I've got a bunch of friends coming over tonight and Sunday is the first official RB party so this weekend will be the true test of the game.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Nov 20th 2007 9:51AM
I played it in BB last weekend. Personally, I always thought the "clicky" strum bar was too sensitive (because it could spring back and read a false strum). Personally, I like the soft bar better.
The new frets will definitely need some getting used too. And I thought the weight of the thing was fine. The drums at BB that I played seemed cheap. Then again, I'm used to real drum pads as a basis of comparison. These drum pads need about twice as much rubber padding for an accurate drum feel.
TGD @ Nov 21st 2007 7:33PM
Harmonix have never said they're working on a patch for online Band play. Just that they'd like to do it in the future.
-Z- @ Nov 20th 2007 9:40AM
Guitar Hero had story elements? Forgive me if going from song to song was an epic tale of love and betrayal. In my mind, Band World Tour is far above anything you can do in Guitar Hero.
Brian @ Nov 20th 2007 10:07AM
i don't like this review at all....it seems like they took every negative comment possible form all the review sand put it into one review...and they didn't say anything good about the game....
it seems like this review was put together by somebody at activision...seems bias
E. Brock @ Nov 20th 2007 10:21AM
That's why it's a Nega-Review...
baby sea tuna @ Nov 20th 2007 10:23AM
Please tell me this is a joke post...
sicsided @ Nov 20th 2007 10:24AM
yeah, that's what a NEGAREVIEW is, they also have a METAREVIEW which talks about all the bad things. Please inform yourself before posting.
Anticrawl @ Nov 20th 2007 10:25AM
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......................yeah it's suppose to be negative.
sicsided @ Nov 20th 2007 10:25AM
metareview talks about all the good things*
shit.
megaStryke @ Nov 20th 2007 10:26AM
Holy... you know what? I'm gonna +1 this just because it is so insanely ass-backwards.
robert @ Nov 20th 2007 10:29AM
let's not forget the biggest negative of all...
you're sitting in your living room pretending to play a toy guitar
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Nov 20th 2007 11:18AM
No, moron, we're sitting in our living room pretending to play a REAL guitar. It would be pretty pathetic if we were pretending to play a toy guitar.
What would you call that game? Guitar Hero Hero?
robert @ Nov 20th 2007 1:18PM
sorry, there was an inadvertent omission of the word "on"
you're sitting in your living room pretending to play ON a toy guitar
and to be completely clear.
by "play" i mean playing guitar not playing a game because it should be obvious that you are actually playing a game
Slaziman @ Nov 20th 2007 2:26PM
+1 for Crono!
Slaziman @ Nov 20th 2007 2:29PM
We aren't pretending to play on a toy guitar.
We ARE playing on a toy guitar!
Adding ON doesn't change shit.
Brandon @ Nov 20th 2007 10:33AM
can I review Nega-review?
(1) They repeated the same thing about 10 times in the whole article and basically all they are saying is they don't think single player is that great and there is no online Band World Tour.....i'm sure everyone knew the single player wouldn't be AS good as guitar hero's hence Rock Band being a party game....but i really don't care...i'm gonna have fun, lol
Anticrawl @ Nov 20th 2007 10:38AM
You may enjoy it, so long as you don't give that hobo any money, cause he'll take those fingers clean off your hands.
Which brings me to my point: Don't feed the homeless, if you do they'll never learn, won't leave and come to expect more from you (i.e. more fingers, money and eventually sex.)
Brandon @ Nov 20th 2007 10:39AM
oh by the way i love how they took the drum pedal quote from IGN...considering it was a pre-production drum set and the drum pedal is totally different....DO YOUR HOMEWORK NEGA-REVIEW!
Kevin @ Nov 20th 2007 11:31AM
You mean do your homework IGN...
Roddie @ Nov 20th 2007 5:28PM
IIRC, IGN actually said they couldn't see a difference between the pre-production unit and the retail one.
Brandon @ Nov 20th 2007 12:27PM
no because IGN actually mention later in their article how there is a different foot pedal and is more durable
Jack @ Nov 20th 2007 11:39AM
(3) "Guitar Hero is better if you're playing alone."
Well wasn't the point of Rock Band to not play alone?
Egon Pax @ Nov 20th 2007 11:44AM
I've actually become a 'social' Guitar Hero player anyways. The only time I actually play the game by myself is to first unlock all the songs so my friends and I would could play.
Oh btw, going to pick up RB RIGHT NOW.
Michael @ Nov 20th 2007 12:20PM
Is Super Smash Brothers a crazy, in-depth fighting game, ala Soul Caliber or Street Fighter? No. Is it a wicked-fun party game and therefore the most popular of fighting games? Yes.
Same for GH/RB.
megaStryke @ Nov 20th 2007 1:40PM
Actually, yes. Yes, Smash Bros. is an EXTREMELY in-depth fighting franchise. All it takes is a quick ten-second glance at http://smashboards.com/ to realize that.
Kyouryuu @ Nov 20th 2007 1:57PM
Be honest though, the inability to do the co-op campaign on-line is disappointing. It annoyed me about Guitar Hero 3 and it annoys me here. I kind of thought the whole point was to form an on-line band with a small cabal of friends and rock through the game.
jayeffaar @ Nov 20th 2007 3:52PM
I don't get the point about Rock Band having a lot less songs than GH 3. From all I've read, it has 45 main songs, plus 20-something bonus songs, which is more or less what GH 3 has. Am I missing something, or are the reviewers just bad at math?
Geist @ Nov 20th 2007 3:57PM
Ugh. No online play co-op? Oh noes, whatever will people do? I really wish people wouldn't include online play as a necessity in video games. In some games, especially twitch FPSs, yes, it's really one of those things you need. For something like rockband, where you and a bunch of friends can gather around, it's not something to be riled up about.
jayeffaar @ Nov 20th 2007 4:04PM
Depends on how you want to play. Some of my best real-life friends now live a few timezones away, and it would have been cool to be able to spend a few hours together online chatting away and beating the career mode together. Not as much fun as being in the same room together, but close enough.
pandlcg @ Nov 20th 2007 5:57PM
I love these reviews, keep em up
