Original NiGHTS into Dreams coming to PS2
While Wii owners will soon be enjoying the first NiGHTS sequel, it looks like PS2 owners will eventually be enjoying the original. Famitsu Magazine reports that an enhanced port of the original Sega Saturn game NiGHTS into Dreams will be coming to the Playstation 2 in Japan in February of next year.
The PS2 version will display in 16:9 widescreen, and feature slightly improved graphics. The game will also include galleries of video, art, and stills from the marketing and production of the game. We're pleased as punch that the original NiGHTS is being revisited, but it is a bit odd that the Wii will be graced with NiGHTS Journey of Dreams and not its predecessor. Perhaps the odds of a Virtual Console release have slightly increased?

DO. WANT.
Grey Fox @ Nov 20th 2007 3:17PM
Me too but this would be a better fit for LIVE Arcade no?
Burnt Meatloaf @ Nov 20th 2007 7:44AM
I'm surprised it took this long. Sega always wants to keep the spotlight on Sonic, and that's their downfall.
McWeen @ Nov 20th 2007 8:05AM
Is that Don Karnage?
Dexter @ Nov 20th 2007 8:13AM
Their downfall is they pretty much make shitty games
Clack @ Nov 20th 2007 8:44AM
I want a new offline Phantasy Star game.
WiNG @ Nov 20th 2007 10:56AM
No it's not Don Karnage, of Tailspin fame. It's clearly Super Mario.
Notice the hat.
Brello @ Nov 20th 2007 2:31PM
Sadly, I agree with dexter to some extent. I liked super monkey ball, though.
McWeen @ Nov 20th 2007 8:01AM
Unless there is a killer amount of extras I'll pass. I still have my Saturn hooked up.
FOXHOUND @ Nov 20th 2007 9:14AM
Pass on this x2 if you have CHRISTMAS NiGHTS. ;)
Nick @ Nov 20th 2007 8:03AM
This is lame and a missed opportunity. This should of been on Wii before the new one came out. Im sure this will hit the Wii aswell eventually, but why bother with the PS2?
Neptune @ Nov 20th 2007 8:54AM
Cause there is over 120 million ps2 consoles?
FidliousWong @ Nov 20th 2007 9:22AM
Because Sega has long established the psuedo updates in Japan as their Sega Ages series of budget releases?
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-19-49-en-15-sega-43-3.html
Nah, that can't be it....
Brello @ Nov 20th 2007 2:41PM
The PS2 is still strong. Even in console/software sales it still competes. No reason to abandon such a huge install base. Plus, I have a PS2, I do not :yet: own a Wii, so I'm happy!
MadMup @ Nov 20th 2007 8:07AM
I still have my Saturn version of this, too. I could never figure out what the heck I was supposed to be doing in the game, though. :\
motang @ Nov 20th 2007 8:11AM
Well thats cool that Sega is making this game on the PS2, so why did it take so long though?
capt_carl @ Nov 20th 2007 8:14AM
OH. MY. GOD!
I never had the privilege of a Saturn when I was a kid. Notice how it says in Japan next year though. I wonder if us North Americans will get screwed once again...
ssuk @ Nov 20th 2007 8:39AM
Wonder how long until Saturn gets supported in the Virtual Console and it's avaliable for download? Either way, it's about time this got ported.
Clack @ Nov 20th 2007 8:47AM
Its probably just a matter of time. If the Wii can pull off N64 emulation, it should be able to handle the hardware that was in the Saturn.
It would also handle the Playstation 1 with ease, but of course that won't be happening anytime soon.
Dopple Boppler @ Nov 20th 2007 8:57AM
Well according to interviews with developers who worked on the Saturn, unless the game was originally designed for porting they're ridiculously hard to do on any other system because of the multiple processors. So I wouldn't guarantee Saturn emulation on the Virtual Console anytime soon, at least in a major way. I am curious about how they pulled off this NiGHTS on PS2 game, though.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Nov 20th 2007 11:23AM
What you're talking about dopplebopper is porting the game. VC releases aren't ports, they're emulated. That means the original code is unaltered, they're just wrapped in code that mimics the original hardware.
If they can get panzer dragoon on gametap, they can get it on the wii.
Mr Khan @ Nov 20th 2007 3:53PM
@ ssuk, but the N64's architecture (compared at least to the Saturn's) was relatively simple
Saturn's was a clusterfuck, hard to port, harder to emulate
@ Dopple Boppler, either there's a full-scale, reliable (!) Saturn emulator included on that disc, or they decompiled the NiGHTS code and reworked it for PS2 (probably this, since they speak of certain little improvements) to get it to port properly
Mike @ Nov 20th 2007 9:54AM
Why not get a used Saturn and a copy of NiGHTS on ebay? The Saturn is the only vintage console I have kept around for an extended period of time. Why? Panzer Dragoon Zwei, NiGHTS, and Baku Baku.
Now... WILL SOMEONE... PLEASE... PORT BAKU BAKU TO DS???
z @ Nov 20th 2007 10:04AM
Um... WiiWare, maybe.
Virtual Console? Never.
Aynway, this made my day. Quit whining, Wii fanboys (and yes, I've owned a Wii for about a year, but I also purchased a Saturn solely for this game).
xGabrielx @ Nov 20th 2007 10:16AM
I'd buy this, as long as my PS3 BC can handle it.
megaStryke @ Nov 20th 2007 10:10AM
Probably the reason why there is no Wii port is because the original game is an extra in the sequel. Maybe.
WiNG @ Nov 20th 2007 10:29AM
If that's true I will buy 8 copies.
WiNG @ Nov 20th 2007 10:27AM
Okay, everyone in the world:
If you own a PS2 and never played this game, you must buy it. Period.
Brello @ Nov 20th 2007 2:33PM
I plan on it. I'm sick of watching everyone go crazy over this game. I didn't own a Saturn, and didn't want one, so I never played this so-called masterpiece. I'll judge for myself when I get my copy.
KNS @ Nov 20th 2007 10:29AM
I'm still waiting for a port of Scud Race and Daytona 2 on the console of your choice, Sega. I know the tracks are in Outrun 2 on Xbox, but it's not the same.
And Baku Baku on Saturn is one of the best puzzle game ever.
Doug Kaplan @ Nov 20th 2007 10:42AM
Ok, big Wii fan here but I have a question. They are updating the graphics and making it 16:9. Besides the fact that the Wii version is a new version and not a remake of the original, what is the big difference between the PS2 and the Wii version? I ask this because the Wii version makes little to no use of the Wiimote so doesn't this PS2 version almost make the Wii version seem less important and unique and most importantly special? It's basically similar games but one is a remake and one is new but since not a lot of people ever played the original, both really are new to the mainstream.
WiNG @ Nov 20th 2007 10:53AM
Wii Version:
-Has more than 7 levels
-Has multiplayer other than 1v1 fight
-Has online data and online modes
-Features new story, characters, etc
-Has multiple control schemes
-Has Dream Garden similar to Chao Garden
-Better graphics/effects
That being said it would take a lot to top the original NiGHTS.
Sadly due to Saturn's architecture, the odds that there will be SAT VC support is low. Hell, even modern computers with dual cores can barely run Saturn emulators.
Fatass of Kickassness @ Nov 20th 2007 11:47AM
Also, I'm pretty sure NiGHTs on the Wii is a sequel, not a remake.
neoalec @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:50AM
The Saturn version of NiGHTS had a widescreen mode too. Saturn had better horizontal resolution than PS1, that's why some games like Panzer Dragoon 2 have a widescreen mode.
Emperor Samoth @ Nov 20th 2007 10:59AM
This is definitely a game I want to play on my back-compat, 60gb PS3.
Shockgamer @ Nov 20th 2007 11:17AM
So why isn't this an extra in Journey of Dreams? As a matter of fact why isn't Journey of Dreams also on PS2? It's not like the game has good graphics or anything.
Just like porting HoTD 3 X-Box to Wii, unlocking the hidden the HoTD 2 and calling that a new product. Thanks Sega for putting the minimum ammount of effort into your games and declaring BOHICA to your fans.
You make GameFly worth it.
Mr Khan @ Nov 20th 2007 3:58PM
I don't know which screens you were looking at, but NiGHTS 2 is definitely up there for Wii graphics, which is certainly more than the PS2 could pull off (although the PS2 was capable of some surprises, like in Shadow of the Colossus)
Plus, there are 2 control schemes for NiGHTS 2, the analogue and the Motion (actually IR) controlled
prateeko @ Nov 20th 2007 11:22AM
SLIGHTLY improved graphics? That'd be fine if this game had been developed/resealed on the DreamCast, but a Saturn game should get a pretty solid overhaul before being released unto angry gamers with HDTVs...
WiNG @ Nov 20th 2007 11:25AM
1. PS2 does not output HD
2. This game and all Saturn games are some of the hardest to port ever, due to Saturn's multiple processors, so really we are lucky as hell to get any Saturn ports.
prateeko @ Nov 20th 2007 11:37AM
1. The PS3/X360 output in HD
2. Both the PS3/X360 have multiple processors or cores
Seems like porting it to one of them would make more sense. Of course, SEGA's probably just looking for the quick cash in and the PS2 (or Wii if I was making the choice) seems like a nice safe bet.
WiNG @ Nov 20th 2007 11:47AM
Nobody would buy NiGHTS on PS3/360, considering how limited it is compared to what these consoles can do, but maybe as a DLC.
Gangsta Smurf @ Nov 20th 2007 12:50PM
So now I have to get a PS2 again? This is complete bullshit.
Brello @ Nov 20th 2007 2:37PM
Why did you get rid of it? It's still getting new stuff.
Blast Processing Megadrive @ Nov 20th 2007 2:42PM
Do I want? Or not want? I am not sure...
I already have the Saturn original, so there isn't a lot of push for this.
But if it had Christmas NiGHTS as a part of it, I think that would force me to get it.
WiNG @ Nov 20th 2007 5:08PM
Is Christmas NiGHTS that rare? It came free in a $6 magazine.
I know I have one =D
Blast Processing Megadrive @ Nov 20th 2007 7:03PM
Looks like a lot of people are selling it for $50 on eBay...
lionzub @ Nov 20th 2007 3:44PM
Yes! PS2 is still rockin' the great games. I just hope for a north american release. While everyone else is enjoying the next gen, I'm happy to be still a PS2 gamer. Suck on your Wii remotes kids!
Mr Khan @ Nov 20th 2007 3:59PM
My hopes of them putting the original in with the new game just plummeted (which wouldn't be hard, sans the whole emulation thing, ISOs of NiGHTS run at about 350 MB)
feh
8Balling @ Nov 22nd 2007 9:43AM
Seriously, where's Guardian Heroes, the best side scrolling 2d button mashing multiplayer beat-em-up game? C'mon!!
Gokie @ Nov 20th 2007 6:26PM
This should've happened years ago. I own the original on Saturn, but I know a lot of people who would love to have a chance to play this again on PS2. Heck, I'd probably buy it again myself.
