PlayStation Store now live, grab PSP content from your PC
The PlayStation 3 no longer exclusively acts as the eerily quiet middleman for your purchases from Sony's PlayStation Store. The PC-based online store (store.playstation.com) has gone live for the US and is ready to absorb your munnies in exchange for PSP games, demos, themes and PlayStation 1 games. Everything you need to get started is right on the front page -- software for transferring the downloaded content from your PC to your PSP, and the ability to create a free PSN account (your PS3 login will work too). Be sure to check out PSP Fanboy's step-by-step guide if Flash-based interfaces flummox you.
The store currently boasts an exclusive PSP game, Syphon Filter: Combat Ops, along with downloadable versions of some UMD-based games (we spy WipEout Pure), several familiar PlayStation 1 titles (also compatible with PS3) and some new themes, demos and trailers, all of which you'll find listed after the break. The amount of content doesn't yet prompt the use of words like "glut" and "avalanche", but it's a solid start. Let's hope Sony keeps the store updated and the content fresh in the coming months.

Great news. Digital distribution for the win!

Oddly enough you have to have Microsoft Windows in order to patronize the store which begs the question, is a Microsoft Xbox required?
Seriously, they shouldn't turn away the customers that do not patronize Microsoft, it's bizarre.
pixelator @ Nov 21st 2007 11:15AM
So basically you're saying that they should only release a MAC version of the downloader? How ridiculous. They (along with every other game related PC product) are supporting the primary computer OS. Maybe an OSX edition will follow - I don't really care, myself. Gamers don't usually opt for Macs.
This is a good step by Sony. Should have been here years ago, but better late than never. It'll be interesting to see what content develops.
Silver R. Wolfe @ Nov 20th 2007 5:24PM
Wow, I figured it was going to be mostly a copy of the content on the PS3 PSN. This is a pleasant surprise. Who would've thought that the company unable to keep anything under wraps would've been able to keep this under wraps?
Esat @ Nov 20th 2007 5:32PM
perhaps they invested in titanium magnesium alloy tortilla wraps?
I'll let myself out.
deaftly @ Nov 20th 2007 5:35PM
its still pretty shitty the ps3 store is nothing more then a web page and not really built into the actual xmb but its better then nothing i suppose
Vidikron (FU) @ Nov 20th 2007 5:41PM
Hmmm... that's never really mattered to me. I prefer that over the slow, clunky, ad ridden 360 dash. Actually, the ads don't bother me so much, but damn, my dash has been freaking slow for several months now. The damn thing locks up for a few seconds half the time I try to bring up one up the guide to access my friends list or when I click on a friend's name and attempt to compare games. It's even locked up completely a few times.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Nov 20th 2007 6:14PM
Really?
Then either:
A. Your 360 is dying on you
B. You just suck.
I have absolutely no problem going through the xbox live menus.
chaoticmagus @ Nov 20th 2007 5:40PM
Okay, I'm actually fairly impressed with the selection of psone games. If they play their cards right, this might give XBL a run for its money.
Can you imagine? Skullmonkeys? Um Jammer Lammy? There are a ton of great psone games they could offer on this thing.
Tim @ Nov 20th 2007 5:44PM
i was hoping I could download PS3 demos with this (because my network connection at work is roughly 100 times faster than my network connection at home) but no such luck. :-(
LAZoftheTamarinds @ Nov 20th 2007 10:04PM
Same thing Tim! I also wanted to download ps3 demos since I'm having trouble connecting my ps3 online. I hope Sony adds them.
tsoul @ Nov 20th 2007 5:47PM
It's Wipeout, not WipEout. The font on the cover of the games may be a little misleading, but that's what it is.
WiNG @ Nov 20th 2007 6:01PM
Countdown till Fernando Mocker trolls this post...
T-minus 10...
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Nov 20th 2007 6:16PM
Even though I've criticized Sony heavily in the past, I will say this, this seems like a pretty cool idea.
tactics @ Nov 20th 2007 6:25PM
anyone else notice that "ugly" psn logo in the bottom right corner?
-"superfan" tactics.
Zack11190 @ Nov 20th 2007 6:27PM
Before you needed a PS3 to download stuff for your PSP. Now PC Non-PS3 users can use it.
But what about us PSP, Mac, Non-PS3 users?
lavos.determination @ Nov 20th 2007 7:01PM
great! Now I don't have buy / struggle through Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles to play Symphony of the Night.
James @ Nov 20th 2007 7:36PM
So it's US only, and only for Windows?
Well I'm screwed both ways. I
Verde @ Nov 20th 2007 7:37PM
I find it so ironic that they shun Mac users like this.
Anyway, I am disappointed there's no Mac support and unfortunately, will have to wait until there is some way to use the store on a Mac.
Come on Sony throw Mac users a bone here! :)
Waruwaru @ Nov 20th 2007 7:40PM
Mac/Linux folks. Just use VMware until they have a solution.
required @ Nov 20th 2007 7:44PM
Waruwaru, your suggestion is rather silly as you'd still need Microsoft Windows.
Verde @ Nov 20th 2007 7:47PM
Yeah, Waruwaru, that is a workaround, but I don't really have the cash to buy a VMware license along with a copy of Windows. Even if I did I don't think I could bring myself to buy Windows just for... anything really. :(
Night Elve @ Nov 20th 2007 7:55PM
VMWare is free.
http://www.vmware.com/
required @ Nov 20th 2007 7:57PM
VMWare is free however a copy of the latest Microsoft OS to run within it is not.
James @ Nov 20th 2007 8:01PM
VMware is free Windows isn't. Thought I'd say it again as that was rather a silly comment.
Zack11190 @ Nov 20th 2007 7:45PM
Well, I'm saving up for a MacBook that is Intel based, so I'll just use Boot Camp.
required @ Nov 20th 2007 7:55PM
You'll still need a copy of the latest Microsoft OS.
Zack11190 @ Nov 20th 2007 11:45PM
That won't be a problem. I can get it.
It's just that currently I have a PPC Mac. I can't run Windows at all.
Night Elve @ Nov 20th 2007 7:45PM
Lately SONY has been doing pretty good moves (The latest Ads, Price Drop, PlayStation Store). I just hope this trend continue.
Ryan Smith @ Nov 20th 2007 11:06PM
This looks cool but watch out, to get software on the PSP you have to download the Playstation network downloader software for PC. I notice it needs administrator privileges to run. After Sony's rootkit history I'm scared to install software that needs to run as administrator, that means it's getting somewhere deep in the system. Has anyone else tried this.
drun @ Nov 21st 2007 1:12AM
It's not US only, I found the same store in Asia region. (need to select regions) And the content is different. (and the webside is surprisingly simplified-Chinese!)
But not yet PSP demos :(, the site is barely open and not much content. But I'm glad they open stores in different regions at the same time.
Hope they add PS3 demos 'cause PS3 download speed like hell...
Powerlord @ Nov 21st 2007 2:45AM
How can you spend munnies if Kingdom Hearts isn't on there?
