Turok rewards you for team-killing with achievement
Ask anyone: Killing your own teammates is just about the most fun you can have in a multiplayer game (except for walking around crouched and claiming you have scurvy, natch). Thankfully, Propaganda Games, the developers of the "we-swear-it's-not-crappy-anymore" Turok finally acknowledged this awesome pastime with the "Grab Bag" achievement.
The 10-pointer is awarded to you if you "Kill at least 1 creature, 1 enemy, 1 teammate, and yourself in the same round of a public match." So keep that in mind the next time a team member shoots you in the face with an arrow before tripping on their own grenade. They're not awful. They're achieving.

Well, at least now I'll have an excuse.

I'd actually expect this kind of achievement from KANE & LYNCH rather than TUROK. Interesting attempt to hook.

This could set a precedent.
ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED:
-Used 4 racial slurs online in less than 3 minutes.
-Quit a game with less than a 2 point trail on the winner with more than 5 minutes remaining.
-Throw controller more than 30 feet
Grant @ Nov 20th 2007 12:50PM
lets not forget:
-have a high pitched voice and complain the whole time because you are 9 playing an M rated game.
-complain when some took "your sniper".
-rap the entire 10 minutes of game time.
-Mock others dialects/accents.
Achievement Unlocked!

WTF.
Here's a novel idea: How about negative achievement points for this kind of stuff?
Animagnum @ Nov 20th 2007 11:28AM
That is not a bad idea. Good call.

Some games have nega-achievements, for example "n00b" in Quake 4.
I don't think we should use those in this case, especially because what if some idiot stands in front of you while shooting, I don’t think getting punished by that is fair.
x876543 @ Nov 20th 2007 2:53PM
I concur.. this would serve to make people play better, not more retarded. Like a teamkill gives you negative gp and then you have some mission to get that negative achievement removed (like 5 kills without a death).
Shagittarius @ Nov 20th 2007 11:26AM
"This game blows, does the TKer?"
xXFenixKnightXx @ Nov 20th 2007 11:28AM
Not trying to flame here but. I was playing COD4 yesterday and I asked myself. In the PS3 version of COD4 do they have as much fun with the game since there are no achievements? Like the Mile High club achievemenet. 360 owners get an achievement but why would a Ps3 owner want to do it? Any takers?
Shagittarius @ Nov 20th 2007 11:34AM
Some people enjoy just playing games and don't require added incentive. I like achievments, I'll like the Home achievments better when you get clothing to wear or items to decorate your apartment with better than xbox live achievments, but I don't need them in any form to enjoy a game.
Jtenma @ Nov 20th 2007 11:36AM
Yes there are achievements actually, oddly.
There are "challenges", such as get 75 kills with this weapon and then for the second tier of that it'll say now get 150 headshots with this weapon...Or it'll say Call in a airstrike and kill 5 people with it, its part of the top tier awards. All of this unlocks weapon upgrades...is this what your talking about?
I got it for my 3...Xbox has this too?
Slaziman @ Nov 20th 2007 11:41AM
Dunno man, especially for the multiplayer I love achievements, 'cause then it doesn't feel like I'm just playing and "achieving" nothing.
gonk @ Nov 20th 2007 11:45AM
in cod4 there aren't "achievements" for multiplayer at all. those are the challenges that upgrade your character
all of the actual "achievements" are from the story. mile high club is from the very last level, in the airplaine, iirc
plyx @ Nov 20th 2007 12:09PM
Seems like everything is going with "achievements". I'm just now getting around to playing Metroid Prime 3 and I keep getting these '400 kills' messages and so on.
xXFenixKnightXx @ Nov 20th 2007 12:11PM
I understand PS3 owners play it for fun but I guess since my buddies and I have a competative thing with them (achievements) it just makes the game so much more fun. Its like I go home wanting to play more because of them. And no I dont like garbage games for easy achievements I like challenging games that require some skill. I wish Microsoft would fix it so where you can erase those goofy games you tried to play like Yaris. I cant stand all those Zeros on my game list from dumb trial demos I tried out. Anyway so like the Mile High Club achievement, man that is tough and for me to be able to get it while none of friends can. Well it just gives me some goofy bragging rights I guess haha. Anyway gaming is really good right now =)
Grant @ Nov 20th 2007 12:56PM
i had more fun when i stopped worrying about the achievements.
I was playing the game on veteran to get the achievements, and there are some levels you just can't play fairly, you need to glitch. eventually i just gave up and played hardcore and the end of the game was much more enjoyable.
Your Ad here 555-1923 @ Nov 20th 2007 11:29AM
Oh man and here I was killing my team members for free when I could get achievements for that.
Thanks Turok ;) (Thumbs up).

Ciaran @ Nov 20th 2007 11:40AM
Since where on the talk about achievments. Does the 360 have the same sort of Challenges as the PS3 in Cod4 or do they get the Achievments and Challenges, or what. Just wondering.
Predatorian234 @ Nov 20th 2007 11:51AM
360 has no on-line achievements. Only single player ones.
But it does have the challenges in it as well. So you get both. But the challenges are only for MP while the 360 achievements are only for SP.
I don't know the big deal about Achievements though. When did we have to "achieve" anything when we play a game? Isn't our enjoyment enough?
Jtenma @ Nov 20th 2007 11:52AM
Thats what I would like to know...
Jtenma @ Nov 20th 2007 11:58AM
I dont now about you but in COD4, when you complete those..."achievements"...online in ps3 ver., you get badass weapons...and attachments....So yea those ....achievements" actually do something.
gonk @ Nov 20th 2007 12:17PM
jtenma, those are the "challenges", which are in all versions of cod
Jake @ Nov 20th 2007 12:22PM
Teenage and under boys are typically very competitive with just about anything. I am an adult with many adult friends. Nobody ever talks about Achievements unless they are something fun to do like in Crackdown or some of the Halo ones. Gamerscore has only come up a couple of times. Nobody I know gives a flying fuk about achievements though, really.
But younger kids and many Joystiq posters (often one and the same) are borderline obsessed with the things. Some kid online in Halo 3 once said he was about to quit playing Halo because he got all the achievements. I asked him if it was fun anymore and he said "not when there aren't any more achievements to get".
So yes, they are very important for some people. But I personally think that they are more important the younger you are. Then again, I only know 8 or so adults with 360's so I'm not an expert on the things. Perhaps some people I know are just too embarrassed to admit that achivements are a big deal to them.

Well Im hittin 30 soon and just about all my buddies are too so your view is really null. We dont necessarily care about the gamer score but more about which actual achievements we have unlocked on certain games. For example one of my buddies GS is past 20K but only because he plays alot of sports games and the achievements arent too difficult. I really dont care for those. I care more about leveling up in MP.
Slaziman @ Nov 20th 2007 12:43PM
I don't care for Gamerscore, that's why I got the Orange Box for PC instead of 360 like usual, since Steam also has achievements. It's just cool to unlock them, even if they do not do anything. I guess I'm just one of those 100% freaks.
schatten529 @ Nov 20th 2007 12:00PM
For a most good games, achievements are just an ancillary bonus to gameplay, story, ect. Unfortunately there are too many games where getting the achievements might be the only "good" thing about it. A true achievement whore isn't going to care one bit about how horrible a game is as long as those points keep adding up.

xXFenixKnightXx @ Nov 20th 2007 12:19PM

Xbox360 version is the same. You get upgrades and all that good stuff too from MP.
Predatorian 234
Our enjoyment IS enough thats why we are gamers. But I guess its just something extra, Honestly the first 2 months when I bought my 360 I didnt even pay attn to achievements, but when my buddy told me about them it made me go back and play my old games like COD2. I got all 1000 points and it gave me the feeling of really "beating" the game.
skittens @ Nov 20th 2007 12:26PM
So what I want to know,
When is Xbox going to implement Demerits? A whole system of Negative achievements for failing at at game. Gamer scores would then be offered as a simple equation
(Achievement points)
-(Demerit points)
--------------------
(Total GS)
It would be perfect for things like this...and would be great to see it unlocked (died 20 time on last boss, losing 20 minutes of game for not saving, etc)
...though this could ruin the spirit of all those little ones out there.
xXFenixKnightXx @ Nov 20th 2007 12:36PM
Dead or Alive 4 has some achievements like that.
example:
Lose 10 times in a row in an Online Ranked match.
Yeah I thought it was goofy.
Slaziman @ Nov 20th 2007 12:46PM
Yeah I mean, what the hell is Microsoft thinking not willing to piss of their fans? I wouldn't care, and might even go and intentionally get them, but I'm sure quite a lot of people would be pissed.
skittens @ Nov 20th 2007 1:33PM
Both scores would still be shown on the Gamer Card and then the total given, so your achievements wouldn't be lost to view. I am sure they could put in an option to display one or the other or both (since I can see this MIGHT be a sore subject for some).
Still, demerits would be their own thing, their own number and affect your life just as much as achievements do.
