Some high-profile U.S. Senators, including Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Joe Lieberman (ID-CT), have made attacking the ESRB their new pet project. The cause of this controversy is, of course, Manhunt 2. You may recall that Rockstar was forced to revise the game in order to remove the "Adults Only" rating given to it by the ESRB. These tactics may have worked in the U.S., but the British Board of Film Classification was unimpressed and still refused to issue a rating for the title.
The Senators are pretty ticked off at the ESRB for not being as censor vicious as the BBFC. But the ramifications of the Senators' attack on the ESRB go deeper than Manhunt 2, and may affect the video game industry in general if the ESRB is put under the "thorough review" that they are demanding.
Even worse, the Senators are calling for more extreme ratings on the Wii, due to the console's motion-sensitive controller. They argue that the Wiimote "permits children to act out each of the many graphic torture scenes and murders."
Of course, they don't acknowledge the fact that children shouldn't be playing Manhunt 2 at all, since the game was given a "Mature" rating by the ESRB, and one of the few ways they can even play the game is with parental permission. If children playing mature games is really their concern, perhaps the Senators should be putting parents under review, and not the ESRB. Those old enough to play violent games can differentiate between using waggle and using real weapons, making separate Wii ratings unnecessary.
At times like these, we really yearn for Stephen Colbert to make a political comeback.

I don't know anyone who actually cares, let alone owns Manhunt 1 or 2. From everything I've read, it just doesn't sound fun, or look fun. Not like say... Postal 1 and 2...
I think Manhunt would be more successful if it had more Gary Coleman.

I am sorry that this is not on topic, but it is IMPORTANT for some:
I picked up my copy of Ghost Squad today and opened it up. There are 4 controller schemes for the game (according to the manual), and one of then uses the Z button for trigger. This will make using the Zapper peripheral more effective and comfortable.
Just so you all know....happy shooting!!!!

Or ANY M rated game for that fact. This is almost like the whole GTA Crisis.
And C'Mon. The controls are pretty much the same as T-Rated Army games.
I'm really stuck for an example right now, but I'm sure there are other things >

Forgive a cynical Brit here observing from across the pond, but with upcoming Primaries is Senator Clinton not trying to garner support from Middle America by basically saying "Hey you don't need to look after your own children, let the state legislate so that you don't have to do anything! Oh, and if your child does do bad things then its evil influences i.e. games, not your crappy parenting"
Sorry little rant over... apologies if I misunderstood her statement or offended any die hard Clinton-phile

Right now the biggest voting demographic in america is people who have no idea about politics that vote for familiarity. So in that case, Clinton is the projected winner. Unfortunately for those of us with any sense are in the minority. (and I consider myself a left leaning independent)

You pretty much just summed up the Democrat party here in the US. There are socialists and should be shot before they can ruin our country anymore than they already have.

You are an observant fellow good sir. And she was in the lead (polls) up until recently. I don't suspect it's from this, but I've followed Clinton's policies for a while now, and joined the video game voters group simply to spite her.
I still don't understand this debate. Back when I was a kid, legislation was looking to hinder movie-goers with harsher penalties. The first movie I saw as a kid was Predator. I'm doing just fine thank you. I think actual violence seen by a child is parents fighting, they should concern themselves with spouse abuse and child abuse.
It shows how pig headed she is going after the Wii...the most family friendly unit on the market. What a moron. We don't need to be told how to entertain ourselves.

Some points:
1. Hillary Clinton is a moron politician. There are enough actual issues in the USA to be dealt with that attacing the ESRB and their rating of a crap game is silly.
2. Ghost Squad is, in fact, fantastic.
3. fuzz: you are deluded if you don't think you don't already live in a Socialist county my man. Its been that way your ENTIRE LIFE...you just haven't realized it because of agitprop. Compulsory state-sponsored education, redistribution of wealth, government interference (and in some cases, tight control and partial ownership) of commercial enterprise...sneak and peek surveillance...the list goes on and on.
Our leader's uniform isn't dress military; its simply a blue suit, white shirt and red and blue tie...with a flag lapel pin.
Visit Washington DC sometime...simply replace "The National" with "The People's" in the names of the buildings since they mean the exact same thing. Its quite an eerie exercise.
Hating a particular polititian due to Party affiliation is the modern version of Bread and Circuses...where have you been living again? :)

Wow thats one ugly picture. Sometimes I have to wonder about the level of intellect these politicians possess. They talk about revising the ESRB rating system, yet they make statements that totally void the ESRB of its purpose. They say the Wii version of Manhunt 2 "permits children to act out each of the many graphic torture scenes and murders." Isn't Manhunt 2 rated M for mature, so why would a child have it?
The things politicians say for popularity are very amusing. They are much greater issues in the U.S. to be dealt with, than wasting time on something that is essentially a non-issue if parents do their job right.

To take this discussion in a less political direction: Wow, that image of clinton is gold!
But, seriously, someone in the us has to grow the balls to start putting blame back with the parents, and bad socialization.
Its my belief that violent behavior comes out of the fact that someone has at some point in their early life learned that violence is an o.k., and accepted way to solve problems, and not been corrected enough on violent behavior at a younger age. As mentioned before, growing up in a violent home, or being subjected to violence otherwise (bullies at school etc.etc) are ways that can teach a child that violent behavior is "normal".
Now, that being said, its not that they necessarily believe it to be accepted or normal, but its kind of "hardwired", there as a option, and thus becomes easy to take to if they are ever in a desperate, frustrated, angry or threatening situation.
I think they need to cut all the fluff an bullsht, and do some real studies of how someone is "conditioned" into violent and anti-social behavior, instead of this media scare that seems to break out every time a new media gains momentum. (This is an age old debate, that has been exactly the same at some point for, tv, videos, cinemas, comics, radio, etc etc.)
As holder of bachelors degree in media science, and a master student in social studies, at NTNU, Norway, i have done quite a few studies and papers on the subject of violent media, and computer games, and in all of the cases i have studied, the hype around the violent media, and the other factual factors in the cases are completely disproportionate.
You can say what you want about a man like Mikael Moore, but he has a point, fear sells. Fear among parents about the effects of games on children sells, so the news media will focus on this until all parents are gamers, and the fear is no longer there to nourish.
Ugh, Guess i have a few thoughts on the subject. I just hope i got a few points across in my ramblings.

Man, this could make an awsome youtube vid.
Execute the killing motions you do in Manhunt2 on someone, but while holding something stupid like a banana or a comb. I'd laugh my a** off.

Sadly, I don't think saying "I will urge for proper research on the true affects of video game violence and let experts of child development guide our decisions on ratings" will get a politician many votes... people want politicians with a STAND, not a rightly-placed deference to better authority.
