Joystiq Podcast 026 - Space fondling edition

With news slowed to a slight trickle and good games coming in a torrent, we're forced to veer from the typical format to talk about the games we've been playing. If you're looking for the secret, inside scoop on Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Rock Band, Kane and Lynch: Dead Men or a bevy of other titles, we've got it. Also, space lesbians, a Brush With Fame and blood balloons. It's a bargain at any price.

3 Gigabytes of Intel cores ftw
Donald @ Nov 23rd 2007 3:53PM
*gigglebytes
At least that's how I hear Justin saying it.
Slaziman @ Nov 23rd 2007 5:30PM
You are right, it really sounds like gigglebytes.
Justin McElroy @ Nov 24th 2007 4:02PM
Of course it's gigglebytes. What else would it be?
Slaziman @ Nov 23rd 2007 3:57PM
It really seems that Assasin's Creed is a love it or hate it game.
Anticrawl @ Nov 23rd 2007 4:35PM
Nah, you got it wrong. It's a love it then after the 2nd mission hate it game, because you realize everything gets excessively stale and repetitive and the shitty dialoge becomes noticable after the initial awe of the game wears off. Even then though it manages to be a decent enough game.
Slaziman @ Nov 23rd 2007 4:39PM
Well, I'll turn to piracy for this game
Slaziman @ Nov 23rd 2007 5:01PM
FidliousWong is sheppy? I don't think so...
AND CHRIS IS WRONG ABOUT THE PARALLEL PLOT
FidliousWong @ Nov 26th 2007 12:30PM
Consider it confirmed. Two accounts were created after the ban. Sheppy2.0 which I knew would forever be called a PS3 fanboy no matter what I said or what I played and FidliousWong that way I could post without people instantly associating anything I said to Fernando level devotion. Which is sad because the Sheppy account has bashed PS3 but that never gets noticed.
As for why I got the ban hammer, well, I bitched after Alexander threw up his third straight PS3 bashing story. Oh well, lesson learned. I still think I was in the right but I did start throwing out some rather heavy words. I didn't invoke Godwin's Law but I was getting pretty close.
FidliousWong @ Nov 26th 2007 12:39PM
Perhaps I should clarify that.
I thought I was in the right for exposing the PS3 bash stories. Which isn't much of an expose so much as calling them out.
However, I was ban worthy as I started using far too many f-bombs and such. Thus my sequential behavior was inappropriate. I had since tried to avoid such behavior.
Slaziman @ Nov 26th 2007 2:11PM
Oh snap, I didn't think the possibility of you having made two accounts.
Christopher Grant @ Nov 26th 2007 2:17PM
And, as such, we're glad to have you back "FidliousWong". Just play nice. :P
Tango Charlie @ Nov 23rd 2007 5:31PM
Ha ha ha ha ha, "Up with people"
Tango Charlie @ Nov 23rd 2007 5:33PM
Also, (sorry for the double-posting) ... does Mass Effect come with an instruction manual? Everyone complains that the game doesn't explain how to do anything, but... isn't that what the instruction manual used to be for?
kenya24 @ Nov 23rd 2007 5:40PM
Thank the heavens I haven't dedicated myself to finding the flags in Assassin's Creed yet. Knowing now that you get the satisfaction of having pointless flags, I'm not even going to bother getting them unless I happen to just walk into one. Also, the parallel story is stupid. The only reason it could even be considered a spoiler is because Ubisoft clearly never hinted at it knowing that it was a stupid idea and nobody wants to play that.
However, I love the game.
Dustin @ Nov 23rd 2007 5:42PM
Wow, I've got to agree with Justin, that was an awesome show! I managed to laugh out loud more times than I can count on one hand, and that's definitely worth something.
Thanks for answering my question about the video 'cast, and I'll be looking forward to the next time you're all together!
Slaziman @ Nov 23rd 2007 5:46PM
Yeah this one was really funny, I laughed out loud a lot. I hope they do a videocast, should be funny.
Purple Haze @ Nov 23rd 2007 6:54PM
Do you know how wrong about Assassin's Creed you are Chris? SO WRONG!
RatBoy @ Nov 23rd 2007 6:59PM
Better and better guys, better and better.
Donald @ Nov 23rd 2007 7:49PM
I almost choked on chicken bones twice from laughing.
"This was a triumph...
I'm making a note here; HUGE SUCCESS"
Dustin @ Nov 23rd 2007 10:14PM
Haha...
That made me realize, WOW it seems like forever since Portal was mentioned on the podcast. The next time Justin loses a bet, he should be forced to sing the Portal song while Ludwig and Chris play the kazoo to the tune.
I would seriously consider selling my soul if I could hear that...
Jack @ Nov 23rd 2007 10:20PM
Yet another quality PodCast. Thanks, guys (and Justine).
Also lovin' the Brush With Fame. Maybe one of these days I'll be brushed.
Raikage (NDF - PK THUNDER RING) @ Nov 24th 2007 4:46AM
Oh no! The Ninjas have stolen our soles!!!
Classic!
Will @ Nov 24th 2007 12:37PM
I had a super mega lawl with that 30Rock quote.
It was a great podcast, as they said. I'm sad that there were no "gigglebyte" uses.
SmokestormX @ Nov 24th 2007 1:51PM
Great show, I just started listening to the podcast recently , however I do have 1 gripe..
..and that is just to be a bit more careful with spoilers, there was quite a few times where your so excited about the new stuff in the games that you let one or two slip out, not biggies, but enough for me to keep my hand on the volume control.
I'm looking forward to these new games, I'd be dissapointed if I don't get the same experiance going through the games becuase a spoiler accidently got dropped.
Justin McElroy @ Nov 24th 2007 4:03PM
Sorry about that, Smokes. We'll try to be more careful.
SmokestormX @ Nov 24th 2007 4:16PM
There's my steed!
Hey no probs, it wasn't you, and i think it was much more of an unconscious slip than on purpose.
Scarred Star @ Nov 24th 2007 5:51PM
"Rubbing one out to space lesbians" you dont hear that on major nelson!
and if ludwig learned english from lucas arts adventures no wonder he talks in puns!
BRING BACK LUCAS ARTS ADVENTURES!
fantastic dan @ Nov 24th 2007 9:24PM
personally, i like the spoilers
Christopher Grant @ Nov 26th 2007 2:17PM
Those are pronounced schpoilersch.
Brilliam @ Nov 26th 2007 2:44PM
Airbus Reconstruction... man, your friend sucks. He can't even come up with a name on his OWN! The Portishead "Glory Times" comp had a remix of Sour Times, iirc, called Airbus Reconstruction. Because it was reconstructed by a dude named Airbus.
The Klepackage @ Nov 26th 2007 3:26PM
As childish as it is, my (roommates and myself) band is called Tea Baggage. Boston was obviously the only choice for a city.
I haven't been playing Assassin's Creed, but I've watched my roommate play a fair share of it. I wouldn't classify the second plotline as terrible, but rather unnecessary. However, I agree with Chris that collecting flags for nothing than an achievement/personal satisfaction is a bit silly.
ScottG13 @ Nov 27th 2007 11:14AM
You're enjoying Soldier of Fortune, as well, Justin? Or as I like to call it Minority Murder Simulator 3000?
Jim @ Nov 27th 2007 5:34PM
I've enjoyed your podcast from the very beginning. In fact, it's the first video game podcast I've listened to and has been a gateway drug to even more downloadable vg news mp3s.
I have a question/request. Is there a reason why your RSS feed only goes back to episode 10? I recently had a hardrive crash and I lost the early episodes, however, I cannot download them again through iTunes because your feed only goes back to episode 10. Obviously, I could just download them again as mp3s and load them into iTunes, but then they do not load into the "Podcasts" tab and it would be a much less elegant solution.
And yes, I have gone back to listen to earlier episodes, I especially enjoyed the second episode where Steven talked about DICE and Chris and Ludwig complained about bandana gansters, if I'm not mistaken.
Christopher Grant @ Nov 29th 2007 11:15AM
I think as long as they're labeled podcasts (which ours are) they should go into that tab, no?
Mischa @ Nov 28th 2007 7:46PM
Hey awesome podcast. I wanted to say that your passionate discussion about assassin's creed made me really want to play the game. That, and I also wanted to add that if English is your second language, it may be a bit more difficult to understand when something is really off phonetically, or if some voice acting is terrible. No offense to Ludwig, but while I haven't played it yet, I think that may explain the disconnect between you two. Case in point, I have friends from Russia, and one of them has this shirt that says "save the drama for your mama", and under any other circumstances, I would have thought that shirt to be really lame, but because English is his second language, I find it hilarious, because he does.
That also may explain why Ludwig is so fond of terrible puns ;)
That and, I agree with everything Justin said about Mass Effect, and I wanted to say that the whole walking thing? That wouldn't have been a problem for me if I hadn't listened to this podcast and heard Justin's opinion on it. Thanks jerk, now the game feels like 10 times slower for me.
Mischa @ Nov 28th 2007 7:49PM
Err that is, the disconnect between you two in regards to just the voice acting. Maybe Ludwig knowing English as a second language may have made the parallel plot line lame too, but I have no anecdotal evidence to support that.
Kryptinite @ Nov 29th 2007 9:56AM
After hearing Ludwig speak about Assassin's Creed and being that he loves Ninja Gaiden as much as I do, I plan on picking this game up after I get my Mass Effect kick out the way. Also, thanks to Justin, I will be picking up Kain and Lynch one sweet day, probably when it drops in price. I wanted to play it but it really wasn't on my radar. Soon enough kiddies...soon enough.
Also, I feel your complaints about Mass Effect Justin but I'm glad to hear you enjoy it. The driving in the game is insanely broken. Half of the time I attempt to flip the vehicle just to see if I can. Sadly, I have not achieved this yet. Although I did drive off a bridge once, that was kind of fun.
Andy @ Nov 29th 2007 10:00AM
man i don't even want a brush with fame.
Dustin @ Nov 29th 2007 11:03AM
Hey, if any of you guys have had any complaints/problems with Rock Band, could you mention those? I'm curious if anyone has done any of the DIY mods to the drums (to make them more quiet) or drum sticks or basically has anything rigged up that would give us listeners some ideas to improve our experience.
