PS3 beats Wii in Japan for second week
The piece of toast that bit you this morning should have given it away, but your stay in the realm of the unexpected has just been extended to a second week. Media Create's hardware sales data for Japan shows that the PlayStation 3 outsold the Wii during the last week, the second time it's managed to do so since the introduction of the cheaper 40GB model. Though overall sales dropped by approximately 30%, the PS3 maintained its third place position with 39,178 units sold, compared to the Wii's 36,230. As always, we'll post the detailed information a little later today. (SPOILERS: The DS Lite is in the number one position.)

That chart you linked to seems to indicate the Wii sold more than the PS3. Is that a software chart?
BooKahKee @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:10PM
If you scroll down you'll see chart they're referring to.
Obie @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:35PM
Maybe Wii sales are slowing down because every freakin' Japanese household already has one.
Things will get interesting again when Smash comes out.
plyx @ Nov 23rd 2007 2:29PM
Is Super Smash Brothers A bigger title than Mario Galaxy in Japan?

"Maybe Wii sales are slowing down because every freakin' Japanese household already has one."
That would be true if the Japanese population was under 4 million, but its not.
The japanese market is losing interest in the console market as a whole, they are more into handheld gaming at this time...

I think you're right. Japan's more interested in mobile technologies, broadband, and social networking--two things that Sony's PS3 and PSP hope to capitalize on. The Wii was small and accessible, but Nintendo always shoots themselves in the foot by placing strange restrictions on products (in this case, limited storage, a gimped network, and the artificial security of friend codes) that may hurt them in the long run. As they are now, neither the Wii nor DS offer anything to feed Japan's hunger for mobile services, downloaded media, or social networking and that could be Sony's key to winning back market share.
Silent Xenocide @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:09PM
Oh no the PS3 beat the Wii again. I'm sure this will be fun.
Grey Acumen @ Nov 24th 2007 1:37AM
IIRC the PSP had beaten teh DS lite for 2 weeks running when it released the new version. I'm kinda expecting the PS3 to do the same thing.
I'm curious more in whether PS3 will be able to continue their increase in sales, regardless of sales compared to Wii, or whether they'll drop back into a stage where they even get outsold by 360.
Chris @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:13PM
o'well, global sales arn't beating wii though, in fact the Wii has a 2:1 ratio compared to the ps3 (estimate)
www.nexgenwars.com (records are a few months behind but not that far)
Phranctoast @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:28PM
and wii has a 1:2 ratio in price, so your point is?
Everyone in Japan already has wii most likely ;)
darth balls @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:29PM
that may be but i dont see that happening for to much longer. for the ps3 to be beating the wii in japan is huge.
Jonathan @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:40PM
It has a 1:2 ratio, but they apparently make money off of every console sold while Sony loses money.
Chris @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:41PM
my point is that the ps3 still isnt beating the wii so nintendo shouldnt be to concerned. Of course you wouldnt understand this having the small tipicle troll mind.
Phranctoast @ Nov 23rd 2007 2:02PM
Its not trolling to point out the fact that a system that is half the price is selling twice as much. In fact, it seems that should be he norm.
and btw... wtf is tipicle?
darth balls @ Nov 23rd 2007 2:11PM
um i think you would be the troll here. it is news good news to sony fans, but immediately you come in and bash sony saying it doesnt make nintendo worry only because you have a wii...troll. anyway it is worrying the hell out of nintendo as japan is the land of nintendo. as the world sees this it will only sell more ps3's. and it's not like sales are improving only in japan, they are improving everywhere. yeah nintendo may still be beating them pretty much every where else but it will not continue forever. and as some of you morons think, not even close to everyone has a wii already, do you have any idea how many people are in japan?
Jeff @ Nov 23rd 2007 3:57PM
nexgenwars.com is a joke, all there numbers a false.
i_hate_mtv @ Nov 23rd 2007 4:44PM
I believe he means 'typical'.
name123 @ Nov 23rd 2007 8:21PM
Phranctoast is right about the price ratio.
Comparing sales between products with significantly differnt prices is an apples-to-oranges comparison. It would only be meaningful if the PS3 was $249.
However, you can use the sales rate and prices of different products to compare demand and growth rate. Right now, the PS3's demand is roughly the same as the Wii's and about the same as the PS2's was at this time. At it's current growth rate, it will eventually allow outsell the Wii.
Secura @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:13PM
This is how it should be....
RoboChamp @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:15PM
Fernando. Wheres Fernando. Someone get the camera.
Fernando Rocker @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:52PM
I'm here... =)
But naa... it's exactly the same as with the DS Lite/PSP
The PSP outsold the DS Lite two weeks in a row, and after that, everything went back to normal.
It's the same, with the PS3 price cut, Dinasty Warriors release and the new white PS3. And even that, the sales drop in about 30%.
darth balls @ Nov 23rd 2007 2:43PM
took him a while to find something to come back with, and it was rather weak. how the psp did has nothing to do with how the ps3 is gonna do in the future.
Jon @ Nov 23rd 2007 3:02PM
Not totally normal. The PSP while still behind the DSL isn't that far off. The sales are decent. I doubt anything can catch up with the DSL though.
Kazi @ Nov 23rd 2007 3:18PM
Yes, because trends in a slightly different market have no bearing in the console market. Both the PSP's sudden burst in sales and PS3's sudden burst in sales were due to a new model. While the PS3's sales boost was because of a drop in price because of that model and the PSP's sales boost was due to a redesign it doesn't change the parallels.
darth balls @ Nov 23rd 2007 3:32PM
yes similar reasons for the change. what i meant is the ending result has nothing to do with each other.
CJC @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:18PM
What the heck is "Mikuni Makoto unrivaled 5" and why is it selling so well?
Kn1ves @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:20PM
Wow I saw someone buy a Playstation 3 today at the Virgin Store.. which right next to EB Games... The apocalypse is near.
James @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:32PM
A non-gaming friend of mine just bought a HDTV and wanted a HD source to go with it. He wanted a PS3 but we all laughed at him and told him to buy a 360.
Just a little story.
Noshino @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:36PM
ah, well, we all laugh at you for laughing at him about that...just so you know :]
arrrgh @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:39PM
sounds about right james :)
Akamaru @ Nov 23rd 2007 3:50PM
It's not gonna be too funny when his 360 dies on him. Actually yes it will.
Vidikron (FU) @ Nov 23rd 2007 4:21PM
Thanks for the input, troll.
BlunderBot @ Nov 25th 2007 7:48PM
You sound like a pretty shitty friend to me - you let your console bias affect someone who actually did some research and had a need that is completely different than yours.
The PS3 is a great deal for someone who is looking to buy an inexpensive HD player. It gets firmware updates constantly and it many functions aside from a simple Blu-Ray player. The 360/HD-DVD combo costs more and your feature/cost ration is weaker.
I worry about the future when idiots like you open your mouth to offer advice that is based on your ignorance and arrogance. Try thinking about others for a change before you mock/bully someone into doing something they don't feel comfortable with. Just a guess, you thought there were WMD's in Iraq right?
Zoesch @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:34PM
With the price cut I think this was expected, what does surprise me is that the PSP has managed to keep constant 50-60K unit sales per week after the release of the Slim. Daaaamn!
Kazi @ Nov 23rd 2007 3:21PM
Yeah, the PSPs turned into a pretty solid system.
Silent Xenocide @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:43PM
I feel pressured to pick up a PS3 because of the backwards compat disappearing so I want to find a 60 GB while I can. But at the same time, I can't think of any games to justify the purchase.
jorojoserojas @ Nov 23rd 2007 5:50PM
I know what you mean. When I found a 60GB PS3 at Toys R Us recently, I jumped on it.
I've yet to pick up a game for it, as my spending has been insane as of late, but I intend to soon. What sucks is that I was playing Super Mario Galaxy before I tried out Ratchet & Clank, and I think that Mario Galaxy has changed my whole perception of action/platformers thus ruining my experience with R&C. Also, the demo for Uncharted hasn't appealed to me at all.
However, Warhawk seems interesting, and of course I'll be playing the hell out of MGS4 when it releases.
Silent Xenocide @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:44PM

It´s only because of the White PS3 and the sales are already falling since the week before, expect Wii to be at #2 or #3 again next week.
Ants @ Nov 23rd 2007 7:57PM
also maybe their arn't that many wiis to be found there.

wewt Game Boy Micro with 109 sales!
Too bad the 3 I bought don't count.
Sold 2 on eBay for $50+ profit
Fernando Rocker @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:49PM
Nothing to worry...
Nintendo sold last week, here in USA, the amazing quantity of 250,000 Wii's. In just one week.
The PS3 only 80,000. With the price cut.
ShortFuse @ Nov 23rd 2007 1:54PM
YAY USA Developers and their shovelware!
let it go Frocker, just let it go.
Jeff @ Nov 23rd 2007 2:02PM
The Wii is garbage, reflected in how well it's selling. How many of us, actual gamers, are those sales? Sure, I can respect the people buying it for Metroid, Mario, Zelda-- but a lot of those sales are stupid adults thinking that Wii sports and waggle are the most innovative things since they bought their first PC last year.
The PS3 > the Wii. At least it is a real gaming console.
ark_v2 @ Nov 23rd 2007 2:03PM
"Worry", OMG, you're THE fanboy.
Fernando Rocker @ Nov 23rd 2007 2:07PM
Wii60 > PS3
Whats the point of having a piece of hardware with the inferior versions of multiplatform games? You don't have achivements, you dont have rumble out of the box, you have bad framerate problems.
And Microsoft and Nintendo have better exclusives titles than the PS3. Honestly, you think that any Sony exclusive that has been released is better than Gears of War, Bioshock, Halo3, Mario, Metroid?
Keep playing your PS3 and keep trying to justify your useless purchase and keep "just waiting until bah blah blah... "
Slaziman @ Nov 23rd 2007 2:10PM
I'm buying a Wii for: Metroid Prime 3, Super Paper Mario, Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Brothers Brawl.
Yet I still think the console as a whole sucks, and I wish Nintendo would become a third party developer for Microsoft and/or Sony already (well, maybe not since the competition would go down the drain, and the customers would feel it, but you know what I mean).
Silent Xenocide @ Nov 23rd 2007 2:19PM
Yea I can't really justify a PS3 purchase. I don't see why someone would buy one given the lack of games. Of course, the Wii doesn't have a lot of games either, but its cheap at least.
Slaziman @ Nov 23rd 2007 2:19PM
To clarify: I'm only buying a Wii because of the Nintendo franchises, which I love, but I think the hardware is overpriced, the Wiimote is a gimmick used to draw "teh casualz", and only really works in very few games (Super Mario Galaxy could have controlled just as good if not better with a GameCube controller, Metroid Prime and Z&W fall under the "few games" category) and it hurts games more than it helps them most of the time. The online is a total disaster, the Virtual Console is a huge ripoff since apart from a few games like S&P are all straight ROM's with their original bugs intact, which is specially annoying for us in the PAL region. It's third party support is horrible to say the least, with very few redeeming titles, and most of the games worth having are from, you guessed it, Nintendo. It really is GameCube 2.0, but now with inferior multiplatform games.
RANT OVER
Phranctoast @ Nov 23rd 2007 2:24PM
"bah blah blah"
May have been the smartest thing you've said...ever.
