GameTrailers compares Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Sunshine
83
Bad news, friends of the Lumas. After an extra week of reviews, Super Mario Galaxy has slipped to the number two spot on GameRankings, returning a certain ocarina-wielding Hylian to his long-held number one spot.
To commemorate the super-duper astroplumber's brief stint as king of all videogames, GameTrailers has whipped up a graphical comparison between Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Sunshine, the last of the home console Mario games. It's common knowledge that the Wii is just two Gamecubes duct taped together, does this mean Galaxy equals two Sunshines? You tell us.

Actually ShortFuse, they did include the silhouette of Mario whenever the camera is blocked by a wall, which happens so rarely I don't even know why you're complaining. All in all, I loved both games, but Galaxy is soooo much better than Sunshine! The game is flat out gorgeous, the music is the best of any video game I've ever played, and the gravity mechanics are pure genius! Even though it's a little too easy, I still think that it's better than OoT. (Please don't kill me!!)

Haha, I won't kill you at least. I loved OoT in the day, but it hasn't aged well. I love the older Zeldas more I think, Links Awakening I still play today.
Galaxy is just fun from start to finish. I've never played a game that's pulled that off before. No grinding periods, so few cutscenes. Annoyingly long intro though. Otherwise it's a perfect game! OoT just had periods of more memorable perfect-ness (that a word?).

Both games had decent cameras, I just didn't like how restrictive the Galaxy one was at times. It wasn't possible to adjust them half the time, and I have no idea why.

@ Fernando Rocker, "I have the 121 Stars (I can prove it with the WiFi optoion) and never have a poblem because of the camera... maybe you suck playing Super Mario Galaxy."
How do you have over 120?

Oh wow. I got 120 as Mario, did like 4 stars as Luigi- but didn't get them all again. I will gradually get all 120 again as Luigi. Coolness :-)

Did you guys watch the HD version of the video? I find it hard to believe that so many people say there are few differences between Galaxy and Sunshine. This video shows Galaxying absolutely murdering and crapping all over Sunshine in every single way.

1 character who looks leagues better in Galaxy is Bowser, they went nuts with the bump-mapping on Bowser for his scales

Super Mario Galaxy is the greatest game for the Wii and IGN Matt* doesn't have emotions like I do fo the Rosalina story because I accualy cried one time. One thing what would be awesome is that Nintendo could send you (via the WiiConnect24) new galaxies. Remember gamers, nothing is perfect so SMG has room for improvement. So please reply

Cannot wait to get Galaxy. It'll make exam revision harder though.

I'd take Ocarina of Time over both those games easily.

Many will agree, Galaxy....I believe was named as the greatest game ever, just surpassing Zelda: OoT, which was posted on this website some time ago.
The kids will say, graphics are everything.....But anybody with a sense of intelligence will tell you otherwise. Gameplay is King, graphics...just helps. I couldn't care less about Galaxy's graphics, Galaxy is fun to me, and thats all that matters.
How often do you hear a game that has great gameplay, people complain about its graphics?? Hardly.
Yet, how many graphic intensive games do you hear people say...the games looks awesome, to bad it plays horribly.
I've said it before, and so have many others....Gameplay is KING

Mario Galaxy runs at 60 FPS. Most people don't know this... but it runs at 60 fps. A game like Galaxy running at 60 FPS on the gamecube would flat out be impossible.

Mario... Zzzz! am I the only one past this kids stuff?

Nope, there are plenty of tools like you out there who can't play a game unless there are GIBs and bullets flying in every which direction. You're not alone.

Who cares, Sunshine sucks.

I just started the "New Game+" mode of Super Mario Galaxy and I'm loving every second of it. The graphics are MUCH better than Sunshine on many notes. The textures, lighting, whatever-mapping took a significant step up. In the molten lava level one of the "boost stars" sends Mario flying over lava while fires leap over him. This scene alone look much better than anything in Sunshine.

Whoever thinks Galaxy looks way better than Sunshine should never have kids. Cause we all no how they are gonna turn out. Retarded.
They look the same. Icouldn't tell a difference in some instances unless I looked up in the corner and it said which one it was.

Then its obvious you own neither of these games. I own both, and I've even played both in the last hour (upon beating Galaxy I went back to play a little Sunshine, now I'm trying to beat the game again) and there is a LARGE difference. Texturing is INFINITELY better, there is much, much more detail in Galaxy, Galaxy uses better lighting effects and takes much better advantage of both Normal and Bump mapping techniques, uses specular to its fullest, and has excellent shader effects. Whereas most of the 'detail' in Sunshine was actually textured in, the majority of the detail in Galaxy is actually mapped and in 3d. It looks infinitely better to those of us who have actually played both in 480p on a nice TV.
Really, all you did in your post just now was confirm that you've played neither game.

I haven't played the full version of Galaxy, only a demo at the Gamestop where I work, but it was very clear that the game surpasses Sunshine graphically. Although both look great.

I don't see much of a difference in the graphics, but who cares they are both good looking games...

Galaxy is definitely better looking, but it's more noticeable on a HDTV. Really, this should be a standard for what Wii games look like. I'm certain that 3rd party developers could really push the system the way Capcom pushed the Gamecube for RE4, or the way Square Enix pushes the DS for pretty much everything it releases (Especially FF3 and FFCC:RoF). Nintendo has proved with SMG that hideous games such as Far Cry are not caused by a weak system, but by lazy developers.
The camera in this game isn't really comparable to the camera in Super Mario Sunshine; they serve different purposes. Sunshine's camera was built to create a feel of open-ended exploration, but Galaxy's camera was built to neatly follow the paths based on what the player was expected to do. Each camera fits the game its in pretty well, and I would not want to use either camera in the wrong game.

I believe you mean "Hyrulian" or something along those lines. If Link was a "Hylian", he'd be the star of Beyond Good & Evil, and I don't recall him being in BG&E.

Hylians are one of the human races in the Zelda series (along with the Gerudo, the Sheikah, and plain humans). They have longer ears than regular humans, and according to the manual to Zelda: A Link to the Past, they have magic-infused blood, meaning that they can use magic whereas regular humans cannot.

Graphically, Mario Galaxy puts everything on Gamecube *or* Wii utterly to shame. It's unbelievable to me that Galaxy runs on the same system as the rest of the crap I've been playing on there so far. Nothing else comes even close. If you can't see that, try looking at it on something bigger than a 320 pixel Gametrailers display. If you still can't see it, consider seeing a doctor.
