GameTrailers breaks down Street Fighter IV trailer
In case you missed the Street Fighter IV trailer that popped up about a month ago, here's a quick summary: There was much punching, and quite a bit of kicking. Also, an obligatory Hadouken. Boom. We're on the same page -- or so it would seem. According to Capcom bigwig Christian Svennson, there are clues in the trailer revealing certain key aspects of SF4's gameplay (it still isn't known if the fighter will be 2D or 3D) and also, the location of One-Eyed Willie's treasure.
GameTrailers was kind enough to break the trailer down for those of us not well-versed enough in the series' mythos to catch the subtle hints. Watch it a few times, let us know your theories. Let's just pray that it's not secretly a preview for a second live action Street Fighter film starring Jean Claude Van Damme.

my guess is 2.5D
and btw
Ken > Ryu (Ree-OO)
what now Street Fighter junkies?
BigC_ @ Nov 25th 2007 7:46PM
Ree-You, get it right.
Fernando Rocker @ Nov 25th 2007 8:32PM
When I play Street Fighter I usually pick Ken... but, in general, Ryu is like the main character, and it's more stonger and more focused.
Ryu > Ken
Kun Hitori @ Nov 25th 2007 9:43PM
Uh...I think that's what he means.
'OO' like in 'boo'.
Hence, Ree-OO = Ree-You.
Jimiisama @ Nov 26th 2007 3:15AM
Ken's top teir in Third Strike.. Ryu is far from it. So I guess Ken wins.
samfish @ Nov 25th 2007 7:51PM
Oh everyone knows it'll be 2.5D cell shaded at this point. Probably going to have 3D stages, too.
Count Noobula @ Nov 26th 2007 2:58AM
It won't be 2.5D, its going to be something new.... 2.95D!
ThornedVenom @ Nov 25th 2007 7:57PM
They better keep that Japanese inkbrush style for ingame, or I'll bitch.
It's be surprising though if the fighter game was aimed to be extremely cinematic, with a revolving camera and such. "Zomg directional arrows" => As long as you're following the action on the screen, you can easily adjust to the action.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Nov 25th 2007 8:18PM
I don't know. I think it would be actually annoying if the inkbrush affect was used ingame.
flameofdoom666 @ Nov 25th 2007 9:09PM
I love the ink brush.
Sam406 @ Nov 25th 2007 8:00PM
Except for the mark in the gloves, the analysis didn't give too much info
Then again, there was little to analyse, un like, say, this...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOFS66u1KRg
The guy who made this MGS4 analysis broke it down really well.
Po0py @ Nov 25th 2007 8:00PM
I say it will be done in 3D but you will only see it from a 2D perspective like all the other SF games. The art will be done in a cell shaded like fashion but nothing like Zelda Wind Waker style. It will dirtier, darker; it may even be done in an inky style similar to the trailer, obviously with less flourishes, toned down a little.
flameofdoom666 @ Nov 25th 2007 9:13PM
I agree fully with your opinion, and I that that it will be more like Okami, rather then Zelda WW.
The Artist formally known as Jesus @ Nov 25th 2007 8:07PM
Maybe the blue indicates that they will be able to have final smashes or something?
Snake confirmed!
superberg @ Nov 25th 2007 8:22PM
Dear GameTrailers,
Wow, good job telling us absolutely nothing! At least it was entertaining.
Thanks anyway,
superberg
The Artist formally known as Jesus @ Nov 25th 2007 9:35PM
J. J. Abrams probably produced the trailer
Platy @ Nov 25th 2007 8:31PM
anyone that looked carefuly to elena's sprites in street fighter 3 already know what is coming .... 2d gameplay with cell shaded graphics
http://www.newwavemugen.com/~zweifuss/elena/elena.htm
in the elena's case they were rotoscopied sprites from 3d models ... just compare the feet in a more hard to animate and fluid sprites like "b,d,db+K" or stance and then with something less prepared .. like crouch
nowhere @ Nov 25th 2007 8:57PM
I think they missed the MOST telling thing from that video. No one sidesteps at all.
DarthDavid @ Nov 25th 2007 9:01PM
This is a easy one.....it WILL remain a 2-D style fighter (not like EX) using cell-shade (a-la Okami) keeping that "soft" look of traditional hand drawn 2-D (with higher detail). Same slow chess like speed of Third Strike (best 2-D fighter eva...still not bored of it), with 3-D backgrounds.....new fighting system based on parrying/combos/EXing of SFIII. Now give me a new Dark Stalkers damn it!!!!!!
Umeadi @ Nov 25th 2007 11:19PM
I agree...Darkstalkers needs to be reborn!
WiNG @ Nov 25th 2007 9:02PM
I agree, 2.5d
And looks sweet
flameofdoom666 @ Nov 25th 2007 9:14PM
Such a pretty trailer! I don't like fighting games, but if it looked like that, I would buy it.
ClarkyCat @ Nov 25th 2007 9:41PM
It's going to be an RTS. True story.
Ryan Hamilton @ Nov 25th 2007 9:43PM
In my opinion I think CAPCOM has created somekind of hybrid between 2D and 3D. Something revolutionary, never done before in a fighting game. The graphics might also be similar to Okami's style.
embassy @ Nov 25th 2007 9:47PM
fighting on streets CONFIRMED.
LegendarySyko @ Nov 25th 2007 11:02PM
Is it me or is this one of the best game trailers ever? I absolutely love it, the style and action. Its amazing. My only gripe would be the music isn't as good, as it could have been. Oh well. Still a good trailer.
DG @ Nov 25th 2007 11:25PM
I think GameTrailers added that music, not Capcom.
Anyway, this (and the HD version of SFII: Turbo) might force me to pick up an Xbox 360. It looks incredible.
clarkestar @ Nov 25th 2007 11:41PM
Hmmm. My bet's on a watercolored aesthetic -much like Okami- where a traditional 2D art-style will be exploited within a 3d realm.
sheppy2.0 @ Nov 26th 2007 12:14AM
I'm suprised. The windswept grassy plain stages pay homage to the Street Fighter II animated movie. The opening sequence where Ryu is fighting Sagat. Also, the trailer analysist misses the fact that this battle seems like a friendly sparring and there is no indication of the Dark Hado, despite the huge fireball, it still remains blue and not dark red. Kind of a pity. I wanted to see Ryu descend on that path as we finally see the Gouka vs Ryu battle we've all been waiting for....
Almadi @ Nov 26th 2007 2:02AM
SNK are doing a 3D cel-shaded King of Fighters 12 played as a 2D fighter game. As always between Capcom and SNK, you don't know who is copying who.

n_revolution9 @ Nov 26th 2007 2:33AM
So basically all GameTrailers is saying is they don't know shit.
Jimiisama @ Nov 26th 2007 3:20AM
Yep.. Seems like most people guess it's going to be 2D with possible 3D celshading. I'm pretty sure Capcom is well-aware of how terrible 3D SF ventures have been in the past (we all remember and cried over EX); 2D fighters might be dead to the general public, but to the competitive (and casual) 2D arcade scene, they're still alive and well--even if the only major 2D fighting game that seems to be updated recently is Guilty Gear =(.
Jimiisama @ Nov 26th 2007 3:25AM
Also I hope they know that kick that "exceeds X-axis" is just Ken's s.HK (the mid-looking roundhouse) from the looks of it.
Zsavior @ Nov 26th 2007 5:25AM
Only thing this tells me is they are not confident enough to show the game off yet and are trying to hype it through a nice trailer, which I will not fall for.
I mean I love street fighter, but you take years to put one out then tell me "Look to the trailer" for what type of street fighter game it will be. Nah don't think so I will wait and just judge what is given. That way I won't hype myself up for what could be a very mediocre game, no my friend I will not fall for that trick.
Oh and Ryu>Ken, he is quick and flashy but not much more substance. In the street fighter world it is all about who you like to use, so it doesn't really matter. But as power goes, Ryu story wise all the way.
EMaster @ Nov 26th 2007 10:55AM
The trailer and this analysis still don't tell me shit. All the trailer does is show me that there is a new Street fighter game coming out and that Ken & Ryu are definitely in it. That's it.
Rabish12 @ Nov 26th 2007 7:25PM
Well, watching that was a good waste of my time. Aside from the blue glow, none of the stuff they actually noted makes much of a difference given the fact that it's a teaser trailer. Even the glow... well, series fans no doubt already knew what they stated about it.
That said, has anyone else noticed that nearly the entire fight in the trailer takes place on a single plane? If you ignore the flashy effects (like the long sweep of "ink" when Ken does his roundhouse kick), they spend nearly the whole thing fighting along what looks like a rather strict horizontal line. The only part where either of them seems to come off that line is when they simultaneously punch each other, and even then Ryu immediately jumps back on to it. Maybe that's the thing we're supposed to be looking out for?
justly @ Nov 26th 2007 11:31PM
Was that a haduken or a kamahamaha wave?
Anorhc @ Nov 29th 2007 12:40PM
Anyone know the name of the background music that plays during that video? It's pretty catchy.
nowhere @ Nov 25th 2007 9:01PM
It's at the beginning of the video: Retro Russian by McVaffe of OCRemix
Richard Wade @ Dec 9th 2007 2:02AM
Right after the throw where Ken "techs" out of it, he goes in for a sweep and Ryu does the punch where he leaps off the ground and punches downward like he did in SF3:iii. (mk+mp)
