Aside from, you know, things that will actually make your life any better, there's little more satisfying than achievements. Some of the Steam achievements from Orange Box were especially gratifying, like the one that required blasting a lawn gnome into space. Now, if some posters on Valve's official forums can be believed, achievements are going to be rolled out to some older games on the Steam service before year's end.
Forum poster "slugz" (not his real name) says he received the following note from Valve staffer Erik Johnson in response to a fan letter: "We're planning on adding achievements to all of our games you touched on in your mail [Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 1, Day of Defeat: Source and Counter-Strike: Source]. We're just now coming out of the post-shipping haze, so these should start showing up on Steam pretty quick here. We're also planning on adding a bunch more to TF2, starting with an achievement pack for the Medic in the next week or so." Another poster says they got a similar email later in the thread. We've emailed Valve for verification, but it certainly seems plausible enough. What achievements would you like to see in those Valve games?

These achievements shouldn't be the only reason to buy it, there is another:
it's awesome.
Oh, and good value for money

Log on to steam, they already confirmed this in the update news (at least on mine).

This would be a neat little addition. I'm not achievement happy like some people, but it makes for some fun, especially in older games where it's just straightforward killing like DoD or CS.

Never really understood the point to achievements, I have OB for the PC and I never felt the want or need to do any of them.

Mass Effect is surprisingly, delightful! Valve is just milking a dead horse. Or beating a cow?

I have some suggestions, although I think they might use the X-Box Live achivements I think they already have for Half-Life 2 (although I think at least 1 or 2 of those ended up in HL2EP2)...
Counter-Strike Source: "Professional" Go an entire round without using the mic.
Counter-Strike Source: "Assassin" Get a headshot with the knife.
Counter-Strike Source: "Counter Terrorism Is Not Funny" Go an entire round without saying "lol" in text chat.
Counter-Strike Source: "Counter Terrorist Ninja Group" Win a round of hostage rescue as CTs without killing a single T or losing a single hostage.
Counter-Strike Source: "HAX" Single-handedly take out half or more of the opposing team using a sniper rifle in one round.
Counter-Strike Source: "Time To Move On To A Bigger Challenge" Get kicked from a server for hacking when you are actually cleared by VAC.
Half-Life 2 Deathmatch: "Toilet'd" Kill someone with a toilet.
Half-Life 2 Deathmatch: "You Must Be New Here" Kill someone with the RPG pickup fan trap in the Nova Prospekt level.
Half-Life 2 Deathmatch: "Have A Blast!" Kill someone by gravity gun punting an explosive barrel into them.
Half-Life 2 Deathmatch: "King Of The Hill" Hold the highest point in dm_overwatch for 30 seconds without dying.
Half-Life 2 Deathmatch: "Road Rage" Kill someone by punting a car into them.
Half-Life 2 Deathmatch: "'That'd Look Nice In My Trophy Room'" Pin someone to the wall with the crossbow.
Team Fortress 2: "If At First You Don't Succeed..." Ubercharge twice in a row without dying.
Team Fortress 2: "Cut That Out!" Kill someone on the other team before setup time is over.
Team Fortress 2: "Annoyance" Step onto a capture point with at least two enemies on it right before the other team finishes capture and stop their progress for at least 5 seconds.
Team Fortress 2: "Speedy" Personally capture a point within 30 seconds after setup ends (or the round starts).
Team Fortress 2: "Expensive" Fire 1000 minigun bullets in one life as a heavy.
Team Fortress 2: "Black Mage" Get three consecutive backstabs without recloaking or redisguising between them (or dying).
Team Fortress 2: "You Guys Are Annoying" Kill at least two enemy snipers in a row as a spy without recloaking, redisguising, or dying.
Team Fortress 2: "Priorities" Sap an engineer's same piece of equipment three times in a row in 15 seconds (he has to keep knocking the sappers off).
Team Fortress 2: "Stop Movin' Around" Snipe a Scout as he is in midair.
Team Fortress 2: "Friend In Need" Destroy a sapper on some OTHER engineer's equipment.
Team Fortress 2: "Stand Back" Kill someone as the Demoman less that five seconds after setup ends.
Team Fotress 2: "Jump" Go through one of the two grating holes in ctf_2fort... backwards.

Achievements are to guys what make-up is to women.
Men/Women who suffer from low self-esteem or confidence issues need something to make themselves feel better about themselves.

Oh HELL yes, time to earn my CSS achievements, I'm sure I can get them all in about 3 days.
Plus this will incentivise me to finish HL2E1

There should be a Team Fortress 2 achievement based on how far your victim's corpse flies! (especially over the moving trains in Well!)

Great. Achievement points are a pain in multiplayer, as there's always some douche that wants to sniper rifle in order to get the achievement for 20 headshots etc.. Instead of playing the game the way it should be played, people end up playing for arbitrary goals which only take away from the original intent. Single player achievements aren't so bad in comparison. Gears was terrible in this way, people fighting over certain weapons, leading to prepubescent screaming over live.

wait im confused. Is this part of games for windows live? Cause if these achievments are not added to your gamerscore, its useless, and just another company taking microsofts achievments, putting them in individual games with no record or total and making them pointless.

So wait, why can't steam users join in on the fun?
Just to let you know, along with the orange box valve introduced a gamer rating system for steam accounts. A shameless ripoff? Maybe, but it doesn't make valve any less awesome in my eyes. It'll be awesome having them in DOD: Source. The game's amazingly addictive, but no one seems to give it any credit.

I was looking my achievements the other day when I saw that the achievement progress bar showed something on the likes of 17 of 53 instead of the 17 of 17.
I then proceeded to look the list, only too see nonsense such as MEDIC_VARIABLE_NAME.
At the time I instantly regarded that as a bug. Well, apparently I was wrong. ^_^

Some good suggestions above but for CSS I'm pretty sure we'll see:
1. Some kind of knife based achievement
2. Headshot based achievement
3. Pistol only achievement
4. Bomb plant/defusal achievement
5. Hostage rescue achievement
6. Grenade achievement
7. PARA achievement? lol

I can tell you right now, I wish Halflife 1 was on the list of achievement games. that way I could get an achievement for keeping all those damn scientists alive throughout most of the game.
