Warhawk expands in December with new maps, dropship
Sony has confirmed plans for a downloadable expansion to its multiplayer-only shooter Warhawk, echoing news broken last month in Game Informer magazine. The expansion, titled Omega Dawn, will drop in December, and will add five new industrial-themed maps -- all set at night for "added impact and tension" -- which Sony claims to offer the largest combat areas in the game so far.
That's all well and good, but we need new toys as well, and here Sony will include the KT-424 Combat Dropship, inside which you will be able to cram seven soldiers, a pilot, and a ground vehicle for efficient, if not terribly comfortable combat fun. The dropship also packs a new weapon, the MBEC-3 Heavy Support Cannon, which if anything certainly sounds impressive, and the new vehicle will be usable on any of the existing or newly added maps, which incidentally will support all of Warhawk's different game modes. With December just a few short days away, Omega Dawn's price has unfortunately not yet been revealed, so in taking a page from The Price is Right -- 'How much would you pay?'

I'm interested in this game. How is the community holding up?
Cuja @ Nov 26th 2007 11:04AM
Great if it's free.
playa7970 @ Nov 26th 2007 11:46AM

glitched @ Nov 26th 2007 11:57AM
Ive found that after the 1.1 patch the game has greatly improved and the arbiters have successfully cracked down on stat paders. Also i have had some extremely intense CTF battles. for example, yeah 90% of my team was on defence, but 90% of the other team was on offence. The entire round was wave after wave of 90% of their team coming in for huge attacks. One of the most intense online round ive played. But that’s just how THAT round ended up.
Im looking forward to this expansion, however if its not free it wont be as fun because less people will be in it. I would pay up to 5.99 for it however.
gonk @ Nov 26th 2007 12:38PM
5.99 US DOLLARS?
Chris @ Nov 26th 2007 11:06AM
This game looks interesting, hope it comes out for XBLA or something.
gonk @ Nov 26th 2007 11:14AM
I'd buy that for a dollar!
pwnetheus @ Nov 26th 2007 11:19AM
Normally I'd expect content like this to cost something. The thing is that warhawk launch went very rough. The stats didn't even keep track for me the first couple of weeks, then people were getting ranked up randomly. I know these problems are sadly kinda normal for online games but still, they took an awful long time to correct them. By the time they made this truly playable, COD4 was right around the corner. Even though that had some problems( it could take forever sometimes to connect to games), it seemed like they fixed it immediately.
Basically I'm hoping that this little "booster pack" as Dylan calls it is free. I remember him saying a while back that they had a surprise gift for us in store for being so patient. I don't think anything came of it so I'd hope this was it but I really doubt it.
A question to the people still playing it... Does CTF still consist of about 90% of your team camping at your base so they can get points from returning the flag?
Vidikron (FU) @ Nov 26th 2007 11:31AM
Haha... I've found it's either one or the other. Too often everyone is defending or the opposite happens and everyone gets in a vehicle and leaves the flag unguarded or with maybe just 1 guy hanging back. But I've found this to be true in CTF in any game I've played.
I would hope that a drop ship would encourage more people to go after the flag though.

Answers to questions:
1) The community is holding up really well. There are usually between 250-500 servers active during the week depending on the day.
2) I haven't seen anyone continue the trend of "camping the base" to get points on returning the flag. Mainly because any team that still does this gets trounced by the other team effectively running all over them because they've holed themselves up in a corner and usually get blasted to death and its a complete shut out.
3) Chris: This is a Sony Santa Monica Studio game which was made by Incognito...which is owned by SCE. The chances of this ever coming to XBL is 0.0%
4) Night time warfare? Heeellllll yeeeaaaahhhhh! Should make some interesting situations and if they add night-vision for sniper scopes.....ohhhh....that should prove to be interesting as well.
Maybe in the next update they'll include weather effects in the new maps as well. Like...snow/rain/hurricane or something.
Just a few bits of information regarding the update. The Dropship only appears on the -LARGE- versions of each map. Medium and Small maps usually dont have tanks or homing missle turrets so dont expect the dropship to appear on those maps.
Also, the expansion pack is supposed to hit along with the 1.2 version of Warhawk so expect a patch along with it. This patch deals with alot of issues people have been having and the most important glitch fix EVER. The dreaded "invisible tank" bug which makes opponents tanks invisible on the map.
Mike @ Nov 26th 2007 11:36AM
Nice, I'm looking forward to this!
Spooner @ Nov 26th 2007 11:56AM
I wouldn't pay for the expansion. I just didn't like Warhawk... but then again, I didn't like Battefield either.
Back to COD4...
PhillyVu @ Nov 26th 2007 12:40PM
Awesome, I still jump on a few games here and there and it seems that there are still plenty of players.
I'd pay up to $10 for the pack ($5.99 would be nice, but not realistic), since it sounds like they did a lot of work. 5 maps, and don't forget that 5 maps on Warhawk=15 different maps (3 sizes).
I'll be on the lookout.
glitched @ Nov 26th 2007 12:57PM
I do believe that its only ONE map, with 5 layouts
Leo @ Nov 26th 2007 4:14PM
...then you're wrong.
PhillyVu @ Nov 26th 2007 4:44PM
no, he's right. one map with 5 new layouts on it. Remember, that Warhawk maps are huge in design to accommodate all versions of game types.

Thanks for the correction.
cmcginn @ Nov 26th 2007 12:47PM
I play this game quite a lot still. I can't get enough of it as it is one of the most addicting multiplayer experiences I have ever had and one of the best games on the PS3's now impressive library. I know I am not alone in this either. This game is highly underrated! I will pay whatever they ask for (considering it almost doubles the map count and the dropship sounds amazing) but would be more than happy with the $9.99 to $14.99 range.
GRANTED @ Nov 26th 2007 12:46PM
I loved me some warhawk, but now that CoD4 is out, I'd rather spend what little free time I have on there (or playing ncaa08 since i've got college football fever)
timnc @ Nov 26th 2007 12:58PM
This is the only game I play on PS3, and I'm looking forward to the expansion, which I believe should be free.
umm....hello??? @ Nov 26th 2007 1:54PM
It's one of the few games I own for the PS3, but I'd be interested if it's free. I might be willing to pay up to $5 for it, but my gamelist is already full of newer games to play--but since I left my 360 at my friend's house so we don't have to take apart/setup RockBand constantly I've been spending more time on my PSWii systems.
KHCloud @ Nov 26th 2007 1:07PM
I would love it to be free but I'm betting it'll be $5-$10 range.
gone with the wind @ Nov 26th 2007 1:26PM
i would pay anywhere from 0-10 dollars but if unreal tournament is also coming out in december i rather buy that cause unreal is so much better imo.
Nate @ Nov 26th 2007 1:41PM
I wish they'd added KB&M support for this game. I love the warhawk controls, but I just can't get used to an FPS with an analog stick.... I don't know how all the Halo fanboys can stand it. Auto-lock-on helps some, but it's still agonizing to walk around like that when you're used to Quake 3 style lightning-fast and accurate maneuvering. Still, four player split screen is a hell of a lot of fun.
umm....hello??? @ Nov 26th 2007 2:03PM
actually, I prefer the Halo controls over this...you move much quicker in this game (and Quake, UT, TF2) which make it more difficult for me to aim....thus, I can also understand why you'd want KB/M support. Add +1 for the suggestion, and if they add KB/M support for this game I'll probably get myself a BlueTooth KB/M for my PS3.
Hiroken @ Nov 26th 2007 2:25PM
Uh, Warhawk isn't an FPS.
Also, anyone who thinks this is going to be free are
a) kidding themselves
b) cheap bastards
Warhawk is only $40, and this adds considerable content to the game. Pay for what you play.
~
Jake @ Nov 26th 2007 2:06PM
You should not be happy to pay $10 to $15 for the content regardless of what game or system it is on. People like you are the reason that this type of thing, which is economically given away on PC, can be sold at 20% or more the full game cost.
$5 or less, otherwise you are getting ripped, imo. This is not a knock against Warhawk. I have a 360, enjoy Halo 3, and there is no way I'll buy their pending $10 DLC. And Halo 3 is 3x the game Warhawk is.
Hiroken @ Nov 26th 2007 2:22PM
I'd pay up to $10 for this, but $5.00 would be perfect. I can't wait--Warhawk isn't just one of the best games on PS3, it's one of the best games I've ever played.

commen-cents @ Nov 26th 2007 2:40PM
did you just start playing video games or something?
Ben @ Nov 26th 2007 8:08PM
Totally agree. I was hesitant to buy the game, because it looked to me like another one of those play-for-a-month and that's all entries, but I've been shocked how much I've enjoyed - and still enjoy it.
Hiroken @ Nov 26th 2007 8:15PM
@ common-cents
Something tells me you haven't played Warhawk.
Also, I've been gaming for well over twenty years, and with limited time and money due to work and family, it takes a lot for a game to garner my attention these days. Warhawk did and continues to do so.
~
commen-cents @ Nov 26th 2007 9:49PM
i own warhawk... i just dont see how if you have been gaming for twenty years warhawk is one of the best games you have ever played... its not bad buts its not great either, maybe the expansion will add another dimension to it, as far as multiplayer games go i couldnt tell you how it compares to others because i dont play alot of them. i really fail to see how its anywhere near being the best game you have ever played thats all, sorry if i was being a dick
Hiroken @ Nov 27th 2007 12:21AM
None taken.
...and you answered your own question. You haven't played a lot of pure multiplayer games, so maybe you aren't aware of the boatloads of shovelware and great-idea/awful execution games out there. I've waded through too many to count: some problems of the past: gameplay, graphics, learning curve, fun...the list goes on.Warhawk does what games like Star Wars: Battlefront and Battlefield: 1942 have been grasping at for years.
Think about it this way:
There is really, at the end of the day, nothing special about Halo. It is an FPS in which you battle aliens--the most tired mechanics and game premise out there. Yet, it's unarguably one the most successful game franchises in history. Why?
Because Halo does the console FPS right. It takes all those things---controls, graphics, story, etc--and executes them well with very few shortcomings.
Warhawk is to 3rd person shooters as Halo is to FPSs. While the premise isn't the greatest and it's just multiplayer, it gets all those little ingredients right, and that adds up to a gaming experience that's tough to find elsewhere.
I would put Warhawk in my top 50 greatest games ever, no question.

commen-cents @ Nov 27th 2007 1:31AM
ok well at least you have your own reasoning behind it, thats a nice change... lol
aaron_k7 @ Nov 26th 2007 3:27PM
I would probably be willing to drop a $20 on this, but no more than that please. Just because there is a lack of PS3 games doesn't mean Sony should charge an arm and a leg for the good ones.
Dehshizknight @ Nov 26th 2007 4:36PM
I'll definitely be buying this. The night-time map will be awesome along with the new dropship. Can't wait till this comes out.
jake11 @ Nov 26th 2007 5:36PM
this is the only game that makes me want a ps3. i need money
drun @ Nov 26th 2007 8:04PM
Update a campaign mode, at least a practice mode, damit
RemzVkru @ Nov 28th 2007 1:33PM
5-10 bucks for this sounds right to me and i will definitely be getting it!! this game is addicting and entertaining, i haven't been able to play any other games besides this. To the guy who said gaylo3 is 3x this game is on crack......this game is way more fun and has more to offer i personally know people who after playing this find gaylo3 boring including myself, cause i used to play it before this came out and now i scoff at it!! puyaaaa halo 3!!
