There was some crazy financial news recently for Perpetual, the publisher of long-in-development Star Trek Onine. The practical upshot is that the company is in new hands, and, according to Shacknews' source, they're taking the game in a new, more casual direction.
That doesn't necessarily mean you'll have to match three dilithium crystals to engage your warp drive, but there is a possibility the game may shed subscription fees in favor of asking players to pay real-world cash for in-game items.
Perhaps this move is for the best though. With a new Trek film still a ways off and no versions of the series getting new TV episodes, we'd imagine that the place on the Venn diagram where hardcore gamers and Trek fans intersect is getting smaller every day.

Yeah. Spock and a bunch of hippy elf chicks might start singing a ballad for Bilbo Baggins at any moment.

The image of Leonard Nimoy surrounded by dancing elf chicks as he croons out a Sinatra-esque tune is just too awesome for words. I want to see it--seriously.

i hadn't heard of it before, but i also now have no hope for it being good
oh well, you can just play mass effect, it's a lot like how a star trek game should be (minus space battles)

Hmm, I'm going to guess the person who is NOT coming back is the guy without a last name. Ricky, your time is up!

Any idiot can tell them a casual-market MMO like that won't work. The free-to-play/pay-for-extras gameplay doesn't sell. RuneScape? Maple Story? Games like that sell, but they aren't real sellers. The real way to profit is the pay-per-month service. WoW isn't the top MMO because it's free-to-play. All the other top MMOs aren't top because they're free-to-play. Guild Wars is an exception, but it doesn't make you pay for anything beyond the original game box.

I still say that a better way to run a Star Trek game would be kind of like the Sims meets Star Trek, since the focus of the show was always on sociopolitical issues rather than any kind of combat
A casual MMO could go that way, if the focus of the gameplay is such

MMmmm if I can spend 20$ + monthly and get what I want and have a unique simi powerfull charatcer who can blow through pointless grind,it would be worth it,if its just a grind version of micro transactions to buy the same worthless low end sht you grind for...then no....
No matter what kind of MMO money scheme they come up with you windup with limp sht and endless grind.
Its like work...only you pay to work....
