Uh, what do you call Toshiba selling HD players below cost? So low that hardly anyone else can compete with their own HD-DVD model? Smacks of desparation.

HD-DVD hands down! Sony's going to lose another format war.

Although I think we'll see dual high def players become the standard like how DVD Burners DVD+R vs DVD-R ended up with DVD±R.
The same may happen with high definition video.

Although on paper HD-DVD should win, its the evolution of the current home video standard DVD. Blu-Ray is essentially a proprietary like all other Sony formats: MiniDisk, MemoryStick Pro/Duo, Atrac, Betamax.

Except for the fact it is not a proprietary format in any way shape or form... Other than that... Sure :)

Answer: Facts
Question: What do Joystiq commentors lack?

HAYO!

I hope Blu-ray wins... The way I see it is:
If HD-DVD wins, PS3 loses a selling point.
If Blu-ray wins, PS3 keeps a selling point.
Either way, Xbox 360 (not all of Microsoft), and Wii don't lose anything big, except for the HD-DVD add-on (but that is optional).

As an owner of both formats......this whole war is stupid.

Blu-Ray has no advantages over HD-DVD and it adds nothing to gaming despite SONY's PR.
To be honest...the quality of a majority HD-DVD discs has been better than my blu-ray purchases....if ya want a good head to head comparison...CORPSE BRIDE.

I own even amounts of both (thanks to the Blu-Ray Coupons that come with PS3)...but I'll be honest I've been purchasing more HD-DVDs lately....

How can you deny BIG LEBOWSKI, THE MATRIX TRILOGY, TRANSFORMERS, and STAR TREK HD-DVD as not big draws? I also got OLD SCHOOL & ANCHORMAN on order.

I need to go over my Netflix rental account to see which format I've been renting more.....but I'm sure HD-DVD has the edge.....Blu-Ray for all its movie companies has alot of crap movies being released for it to be honest. More titles isn't always better as crap is crap.

The only Blu-Rays I bought without the PS3 coupons were CASINO ROYALE, RATATOUILLE, PIXAR SHORTS, PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN 1 & 2.

If the HD-DVD camp dropped the price of the COMBO discs.....would be a huge hit to Blu-Ray IMO.

For those that think Blu-Ray is proprietary, please see

Apple, Dell, Panasonic, Sony, Hitachi, LG, Pioneers, Sharp, Samsung, Phillips

who are all on board or support both formats.

The most tiring part of the whole format war is reading uninformed BS comments.

PS3 has no games

Sony forced BluRay on people

BluRay is a proprietary Sony format

The BDA counts PS3 games and recordable media as disc sales and that is how they have a 70% market share

They only sell movies because of BOGO sales

HD-DVD players are better because they can connect a RJ45 cable in the back of them

Really how many more times do people need to post this crap. If you are going to argue why something is better or winning a format war at least post something with some truth to it. Fact is BluRay is selling better across the board everywhere. Another fact is that is a more accepted format than HD-DVD. Third fact is that there is more than one choice in the brand of your BluRay player in stores that sell them.

Thats just it, more sales and more choice make BluRay the better bet.

So is there a valid reason as to why this is being posted on a gaming blog? To be fair you should post all the press releases about HD-DVD then with things like their milestone of reaching 750,000 players, if you're going to post about a movie related format war.

They just post whatever they find as filler between their pointless rock band posts (put your drum sticks here, mentioning it way too much in the weekly recaps, etc).

I am sick of hearing about Rock Band. We get it, you like it. Give us some information about something else!

It IS stupid. Sony loves to "big-up" on how BR is winning Europe, but seriously, BR is FAR FROM reaching sales of a single dvd movie. Wait till next year with all the price drops and stuff..

And yeah, the HD/DVD combo disk IS KILLING HD-DVD IMO. Wannna kill BR?? Drop the price on those combo disks! I was in BB on black friday ready to grab some HD-DVD's but the Prices on the combo discs prevented any HD purchase. Sony needs to kiss Toshiba's hairy beanbag for doing that.. Why combo?? Isn't the reason to buy HD is to move to another format?? I wont watch the DVD side.. I HAVE HD-DVD!

yea that is kind of crazy if you think about it, but maybe HD DVD does it for people that only have one HD DVD player. i mean, i only have one blu-ray player (PS3) and it's in my bedroom but if i want to watch a movie with my family, i would watch it on the tv in the bigger room downstairs that only has a dvd player. that and taking your movies to friends houses are the only things i can think of to do the combo thing though. i would rather lug my PS3 around than pay more for something i will barely use.

I just want one to win so the burners can come cheap. 4.5 GB per disc on dvd is annoying when backing things up (since buying a huge bundle of dual layer discs is about 3x more expensive).

Here's to bluray, I want my 25 gigs per disc for backing things up and burning off data! HD-dvd does only what, 15 GB per layer? So if bluray wins, you basically will end up with 10 more gigs per disc once things get cheap enough.

Of course, this is assuming that both will eventually drop to roughly the same price like DVD did and bottom out.

And on the flip side, the weekend holiday sales rush and Best Buy, Circuit City, and Wallmart's HD-DVD player sale has boosted HD-DVD players to 750,000 strong in the US.

Here's something I posted in anoter forum, the context doesn't make sense here, but the premise does.

"I suppose everyone that buys a PS3 has disposable income as well. Because, my young douschebag friend, they're the only ones buying BR-DVD players. Which might seem like a neato thing to you. To a business, it's not good. Why support a format only one company is making money on? It has happened with all Sony proprietary formats, which are far too numerous to list. History always repeats itself, Sony's arrogance has not changed at all.

Hmmm...Disney and company goes after an elitest group of people who are the only ones that can "afford" to buy something. Or they go for mom's and dad's across the country shopping at the hell that is Wal-Mart? Remember, Disney supported DIVX players as well, they said that was the superior format, as well as the same studios supporting BR-DVD now. Look where DIVX is at now.

BR-DVD is going to be succesful by default due to the PS3, so movies will be made. The studios exclusive to the format will change their minds when they see stand alone sales of the HD-DVD. Also, the companies not making money on your supposed "affordable" (because no one is buying them, apparently no one can "afford" them) players will stop producing and switch to the far less expensive tech and superior tech of HD-DVD where they actually will make money.

It's a matter of common sense, sure your game console will push enough BR's to warrant movies being made. In the end though, it's the stand alones that mean the most, not every movie-maven is a game player and vice-versa. So please drop your elitest attitude and look at the situation without blinders on. BR-DVD will survive due to the PS3, but HD-DVD will win out due to middle America and the rest of the country buying standalone HD-DVD, and you will see an exodus of studios swtiching over in 2008. People underestimate the influence of Wal-Mart, K-Mart's etc...etc...

Sure Bang and Olufsen are fantastic sound systems, I don't see them winning any sales contests...Hmmm a $100 HD player to go with my $500 HDTV is just bought? Or a $1000-$600 HD player to go with my $500 HDTV. Do the math. It's not that difficult. Trust me. It's simple economics. The videogame world does not control the movie world. People also make the assumption that the DVD consortium is going to let HD-DVD fail...again DVD went up against DIVX a supposed "superior" format. We all know how that ended.
