They've also announced a new trailer titled, "Move up, ladies" which is scheduled to drop Dec. 6th – next Thursday – at 3:00pm EST. Let's just hope things go smoother than their previous two attempts, which managed to clog the tubes and send impatient fans scrambling to torrent sites. Hey, Rockstar, we know a certain corporate benefactor who would love to host your trailer. Call us, our people can talk to your people.
Never one to just toss out a .jpg and say, "Here's some box art, losers," Rockstar commissioned a fancy time-lapse video showing the creation of the cover art for the latest GTA installment. What does it tell us about Grand Theft Auto IV? Let's go through it: helicopters, motorcycles, handguns, sniper rifles, aerial trams, cornrows, and lollipops. Peep the video after the break and join us in wondering where that painting's hanging right now.

hahaha yea right...
NO WAY GTA4 does anything different in the series outside of maybe the graphics. GTA3 will never be surpassed the way it surpassed GTA2.

im with you when you say that they wont be able to make a jump as big and significant as the jump from GTA2 to GTA 3 but GTA 4 does add more stuff than just graphics. so in all fairness, its got a cover system, a more realistic wanted star system, and a more realistic mission system. GTA 4 will be primarily just like any other GTA 3 series game but it does have some interesting new announced features.

Dude have you been reading the previews? The modifications are insane. Taking cover. Realistic cop activity. Shooting actually affects you (if you get shot in the leg, you will slow down). True, the leap from 2d to 3d was incredible, but don't underestimate the large changes they are making to the core gameplay.

It's tough to argue with a chick lickin' a lollipop. You just sort of do what she says. And then make her pay for it.

Aerial trams, is that some sort of code like a Cleveland Steamer?
Though there is something rather gangster about sky rides and ski lifts. I mean there you are moving slowly and exposed to the world...and you don't have a care in the world about who sees you. You just...ride.

SO does every GTA box art have to have a lady licking a lollipop? Not saying it's bad, but how about something different..

Ok, tell you what. I'll send them a letter and ask them that, for GTA 4.2 they have a woman eating a ball of cotton candy. How's that?

It'd be hilarious if they ever got sued by a chick who looked exactly like the one sucking the lollipop.

I cant wait. Hopefully the delay is well worth it and we're looking at the best GTA ever; however, something tells me that it isnt gonna be better than San Andreas...maybe just as good, but not better.

Why are you bringing up Gears?? I do play other games you moron. Damn good at them too! Anyhow at least Gears isn't a mindeless waste of time. Its tactical. Its not a run and gun game. Way better than GTA, to me at least. GTA may have sold millions but it doent mean its a good game by any means. It just has the "pop" factor.

I could never get into the GTA series, but they do get a lot of critical praise. The subject matter, the acting, the production values, the open-world, and lots of other aspects of the game get tons of credit (although the gameplay seems to go laregly ignored).
I personally never get into the story lines, and the gameplay is just too shoddy for my tastes. Plus, the game scares me in that there's just so much stuff to do. I'm with the camp that would appreciate shorter games; there's just not enough time for them all.

Gears of War is NOT tactical. Not even by a long shot. Just because it has a cover system does NOT make it a thinking man's shooter. The game has the depth of a mud puddle. Not saying it isn't fun but "run, run, run" does not a tactical shooter make. Face it, Gears of War is mindless fun. Nothing wrong with that.
Just as there's nothing wrong with the GTA series. Either you like it or you don't. Frankly, I've yet to finish one (but beat Saint's Row.... amazing what decent aiming does to motivate an individual). But I still enjoy them because I'm never bound to the narative. You can kill 10 minutes or 10 hours in a GTA game. The depth you find is just that, you have to FIND it. And yes, it does build towards something great. So no, these games are not mindless. But that wasn't the point of the original post from me, was it.
Nope, I bashed Gears. A game so absolutely devoid of intelligent thought, practically the most commonly spoken word in the game describes it's plot beautifully. Shit. Like an Arnold movie, trying to have a thought while playing Gears of War is soo damn counter intuitive your performance actually suffers from it. Once I finally beat RAAM with a friend, he was psyched to go back and do it again. Me, personally, I was ready to laugh at how bad it is and file it next to moronic experiences like American Ninja and Elf. It's a fun game, no doubt. But mindless is overselling that game.

Count me in the GTA boredom camp. I tried each of the games and basically felt I could get the same experience from GTA: San Andreas by watching the Tupac movie. As for Vice City, there's Scarface. GTA 3, well, that's harder to describe, but I'd have to go with a Godfather/Sopranoes mix with that one.
My issues with the entire series: the graphics in each were roughly the same even though games released at the same time as San Andreas and Vice City had far better graphics. The only part of the gameplay I found fun was stealing vehicles and ramping/stuntdriving them until they exploded. Finally, I just simply didn't feel compelled to finish the games due to their unimaginative storylines and the fact you had to unlock new parts of the city (or new suburbs in San Andreas) by furthering the story just ruined the experience for me.
Hell, while I'm on the unlocking areas issue. These games are greatly lauded for being some of the best sandbox games there are, but very little of the game world is explorable until you get about halfway through the storylines of any of the games. Last I checked, sandboxes didn't have invisible barriers to stop me from playing in a different part of the box.

Points well taken guys. Even still I wonder if it will hook people the way it did on 3. I mean, I've never seen such a mature, "hardcore" if you will, game cross the mainstream/"casual" line and appeal the way GTA3 did.

Aside from having the same style as the past three GTA cover arts, this one seems to emphasize a more realistic, serious tone.

Yeah I agree with what you say, but there is no need for a major jump like we saw from GTA2 to GTA3. I mean we did not see a major overhaul from Halo 2 to Halo 3, because it was not needed. Without a doubt there will be improvements, but why would the developers change what has worked. The GTA series has sold millions of copies, even the crappy spin-offs have sold a ton. There is no need to fix what isn't broke.

Am I missing something? I don't remember GTA games ever being a bad experience.
If you tried to 'beat' the game quickly it was never as much fun as just running around exploring, causing mischief, killing random people, collecting hidden packages, side missions, mini games, trying out different vehicles, watching cops beat down gang members, there was so much fun stuff going on all the time in those games. Plus the ability to 'make your own fun'. I spent hours in San Andreas just messing around on the BMX bike trying to do crazy stunts. I also quite enjoyed the storylines in Vice City and San Andreas.
Yeah maybe if you go back and play them now, they might have less technically advanced graphics, broken aim system, and um.. thats about it. It's still going to be a FUN experience.
I play games for FUN! And I hope this next GTA brings back everything that is fun about games. I sort of think a lot of 'next gen' crap is boring. I want to play a fun game, I am not as interested in these overly detailed, interactive movie/intensely complicated control scheme types.
That's what I am loving about Assassins Creed, beautiful game both graphically and artistically, AND its a video game! yeah, the kind with good old repetition, and collectibles!
