CNBC has been having a field day with the Red Ring of ... um, they call it "Doom." Anyway, they have an article and a couple segments on the Red Ring of Death today. The catalyst for the stories is the recent class-action lawsuit filed against Microsoft and Bungie over allegedly faulty Halo 3 discs. CNBC confusingly tries to link the disc and RRoD issues together, but fails miserably. We're pretty sure games don't directly cause hardware failures, they just happen to be in the drive at the time.
In an attempt to show that despite the RRoD issue and the lawsuit, everything else is all good, Microsoft told CNBC they sold over 310,000 Xbox 360 consoles during the week of Nov. 18th. The best part? Not only does the reporter herself say at one point she's gotten the RRoD, but while they're at one person's house he gets it too. As this blogger joined the Red Ring of Death club last night, that brings the current Joystiq Xbox 360 failure rate to around 90%. Happy Holidays!

I RRoD'd today. Had mine since January of '06. Playing Guitar Hero III, Cherub Rock on Expert, and bam, suddenly it froze.
"Oh no big deal," I thought, "this is just another freeze. Happens from time to time."
I go to turn off the Xbox, and there it is, the three red lights.
Surprised? Not at all. I consider myself lucky it lasted this long, haha.
Strange thing is, I had just overheard a kid at school saying, "Yes! I get my Xbox 360 back today!" I then told him mine had never bricked, though it seemed to be on it's last breath.
Jinxed.

Mine's broken twice in two years, and it took a month each time.
This seems to be par for the course for others too.
Oh, and the new one has a semi-screwed up optical drive.
I have a friend who for some reason over a period of many months gets into this mode of criticizing me for saying the 360 is unreliable. He says stupid stuff like "MS has it fixed this time". Recently he was on me for buying games for my PS3 instead, which was doing so that when my 360 dies again, I'll have some games to play.
Well, each time he gets on this tip, his 360 red rings and he has to retreat. This time he decided to buy a replacement 360 because he doesn't think MS will ever send him a truly repaired unit.
This is completely screwed.
Anyway, I have over a dozen friends with 360s and only 3 of them haven't had their 360s die on them at least once. And once of them never even turns it on, so he's kind of exempt. People bandy about the idea of a 40% failure rate. If the failure rate is below as 50%, I'd be shocked.

It's beautiful, the wonderful naiveté that pre-RRoD babes have. As though treating it well will keep it from failing.

You guys with your "inevitable" speak are no better. Some people NEVER get the RROD. My brother is hoping for it so he can get a newer model one.

If you put the 360 horizontally, it lasts longer. I've had mine for about 1.5 years and it hasn't broken down once.

MS has not fixed anything. When mine RROD'd last October (2006), I got back a refurb. It's MFG date was 4/2006. I recently had to take that one back to BB and use the in-store warranty. They gave me a "new" one, bu t that one had a MFG date of 10/2006. If I recall, no final fixes to the hardware were made yet, so the unit I have is just another ticking x-bomb.
Sure, MS looks like they are doing what it takes to take care of it's customers. But I offer they are not. The ONLY solution to the problem is to admit that certain hardware revisions are just plain flawed and need to be REMOVED from the hands of the consumers. Not "fixed" and then sent to some other consumer in the hopes it will last long enough to get through the current warranty period.
My point is that MS is using the 1B they spent for warranty to just buy time.
The real fix is to go back to the drawing board, isolate, identify, and fix the problems, and then replace any failed units with the new ones that will be reliable.
By doing that they will have effectively removed all the junk that we have bought and actually get something that we should have had in the first place.
I see what they are currently doing as a support merry-go round, and all us customers have a ticket or are already riding on it.

I had a RROD on Nov 10th, and I called MS. They sent e the box, and it got fixed and sent back to me the Monday after Thanksgiving.
So, while RROD is frustrating, MS makes it pretty bearable considering I didn't pay anything to get it fixed and they were pretty quick about it.

This thread is hilarious...
I think TXCrowe is losing it.
I've had my Elite since it first came out and no problems so far.
But even IF it did break down I wouldn't give a fuck. The 360 is the greatest system this generation and has the best games. And if you can't survive for 1 to 2 weeks w/o videogames then you've got issues.
Personally I would just go and buy another one cuz its just that damn good.
The ps3 has no games. Who cares how long it lasts if you have nothing to play on it?

That's exactly what I did. My launch 360 died after about 20 months. I used the opportunity to buy an Elite (I think it was right around the price drop). Didn't know if my launch 360 was in warranty but sent it off anyway. They sent me back a new console and free gold trial for my troubles. I only missed like one day of gaming.

I highly doubt my halo themed will break down...
1: It apparently has smaller falcon chip........
2: I hardly play it anymore(free online and wifi for PS3 baby)
3: Wifi a ripoff otherwise i wud actually keep on re-registering a new a/c for 1 month free online. £40 for 1 yr is worth a new game but may consider it.

People paranoic about the RRoD should wait until the Jesper or whatever with the 65nm GPU.

Strangest thing happened to my friend. About two weeks after he got his console (it was March of '06), the RRoD showed up. He turned off the console, then turned it back on, and viola it was fine.

The system will surely RROD again. Same exact thing happened to me. Once the chips start to come off due to the BGA connections weakening due to heat and lead free solder the end is near.
Sooner or later, it will be fatal. My first unit was mfg'd 4/2006 and it RROD'd 3 months after I bought it.
No biggie, got replaced other than shipping charges for me at that time.
