I think Metal Gear Solid 4 is for Konami what the Veyron is for Bugatti. Including the design costs, the Veyron cost substantially more per car than they sold them for and they have lost alot of money doing it, yet it is the best car in the world and with everyone pushing for greener transportation methods, possibly the best combustion engine-based car we will ever see.

MGS4 is a showcase for Konami and the Kojima team. Snakes story must come to an end and they are going to see him out in the most spectacular way possible.

If this means a loss in profit then so be it. They have made so much in the previous games. They owe it to the fans, Sony and Snake himself.

I can't think of a better comparison for the PS3 to the games industry than the Veyron to the auto industry. It costs more to manufacture than they make on it, most people aren't willing to pay the price tag on it, and while its 0-6o (processing power) is impressive, its MPG (fun/games) is very low. It's an impressive piece of machinery that's the complete opposite of what the average consumer wants.

So in that case wouldnt that mean the game would be somwhere between 30-60 million dollars to make? If so..they're in big trouble.

I only played the first one on my computer and it was fun. I never played any other version, nor have I owned any system since the N64. But I have rejoined the console market when I bought the Wii at launch and have now ordered the Dell Xbox360 bundle.

For me the PS3 is a load of !$@%$ and the Wii360 is the way to go.

That simple.

MSG4 needs to be on the 360.

You guys forget... the PS3 game selection SUCKS. I wouldn't be surprised at all if all those people who dropped way too much money on a PS3 didn't run out to the store the day a good game actually comes out, especially if their pockets haven't been drained by the fantastic 360 game selection this fall. PS3 owners are really bored and are counting down to MGS4 release like it's the second coming of Christ.

None of those games rank above 90 at MetaCritic :( and all the worthwhile multiplatform games are better on 360... that includes Assassin's Creed.

But hey, you could do way worse than a PS3, and it has enough games to keep you entertained, the problem is that the 360 is just better, and they are similarly priced...

They aren't all better on the 360... that's some absurd myth. You have a handful that perform better on the 360, but many are the the same with a couple actually better on the PS3. And, honestly, I still think some of the PS3 games are getting unfairly hammered because they are PS3 games. You'll have mostly great reviews and then a couple of sites hand out absurdly low scores. I mean, damn, one site gave R&C a 60. WTF? That's not even remotely close to accurate... I don't care how much of a fanboy you are. I'll put R&C and Uncharted up against anything else. Two of my favorite games this holiday season thus far.

I honestly don't see the huge deal with MGS4. I like the Metal Gear games. Always have. I look forward to 4.

But it doesn't seem to me as big of a deal as FFXIII or GTAIV or some of the other mega-anticipated titles. All of the MGS4 gameplay so far shows me more of the same with some gimmicky tack-on's like "becoming a statue" that doesn't truly add to the gameplay any more than another type of box would.

The graphics are first class. It will no doubt be a wonderful and fun game. But it has seriously been uber-hyped since well before the 360 came out and I just don't see why. It won't likely break 3 million in sales. The multiplayer costs extra. The gameplay is familiar already.

Don't get me wrong. I'll gamefly and play through MGS4 for sure and rather enjoy it. But this game has been hyped longer and harder than Halo 3 was when you really think about it. The game will be played for a few months and that will be it.

Haha... I agree with most of your assessment except it being hyped harder than Halo 3. Until I see MGS at fast food joints and can buy the game at 7/11 they aren't even in the same league in terms of hype.

I have one question, if you own an xbox 360 which you feel is a superior console and thus satisfied with your current gaming experience, why does this bother you so? I don't see people killing themselves over a PS3 version of Halo and Mass Effect. The publishers will definately get their profits, even if they have to make a 360 version, and this will only prove the PS3 is dead. After that what next? Bashing the Wii? Little wonder why xboxer like halo, its an avenue to release pent up anger. Why are you so angry? Ok that was the third question, sorry for that too.

Why is everyone seriously disputing whether or not this game will sell a mill on day one?? It's obvious the Producer stated this because he knows full and well there no chance of this happening. It's almost a borderline slap in the face to the PS3 IMO.

Sure they can, I mean Halo 3 sell 3.3 million the first day and is only in Xbox 360.
Why MGS4 can not sell 1 million?
If they have a advertising team as good as Microsoft I don`t see why not.
Seriously my dear friends, Mario, the great mario! only 500k first day. And he is a favorite, is Wii, is Nintendo, had great ads.
MGS4 can sell 1 million if they pay as much as Microsoft pay for the Halo 3 Ads. Is too much money!
You have to be Bill Gates.

Halo 3 had a base of 7 million+ to draw from. That's approximately half of the user base of the 360 that actually bough Halo 3. PS3 has maybe half or less of that at this point. IF half of the ps3 owners actually buy mgs4, then problem solved. Konami makes money, although whether that will make them break even dispite the million copy claims, is suspect. It's doubtful that half will even buy it. Don't forget, a portion of ps3 adopters are simply bluray player adopters looking to buy a cheap bluray player.

If Konami can pull off the "simultaneous worldwide release" then I don't see why they wouldn't be able to sell 1 million units of MGS4. The PS3 install base will be much larger by the time this game is released.

Is just me or since Halo 3 sale more than 3 millions dollars first day every one wants to sell 1 million, 1.5 million etc.
Seriously before every one waits to make 3 to 5 millions in total sells and says it was very good.
Halo turn all this game developers greedy, look every one running to western studios to make more American appealing games. This is madness!

Not games, the news, for example Esquare Enix say they want to work with American studios to develop games more appealing to westerns.
And I do not mention MSG4 in this last post. Dont be paranoid.
Just say since Halo 3 was realesed every one sales expectations have raised. When Halo 3 was launched, was the first time I hear a studio says "we going to sell a million the first day".

You know, I would usually take this opportunity to bash the PS3, but I remembered what it was like when Sega failed. I'm not saying that the PS brand will fail and jump out of the console biz, but I knew what it was like to have the side I was pulling for die in my arms.

The only difference is that the PS3 might still have a chance where my "little console that could" Dreamcast didn't.

Easy, all they have to do is release a version for something call the Xbox 360. If the game is good, sales can easily hit 1,000,000 copies.

On the PS3, to my knowledge, no game has had that kind of overall sales yet. Motorstorm and Resistance were around 800,000 units YTD. Might even be 900,000 by now.

I love people talking about devs being greedy. You tell me how much money you need to make to pay off the development costs incurred by a 100 person team for 3 years. I can wait while you do the math. Too hard? OK, assume average salary and overhead of $100,000 per person per year to make it easy. $100,000 * 100 * 3 = $30,000,000. And that is probably on the low end. Selling enough copies to pay that off is part of why they call it a business and not an expensive hobby. Your cost to make the discs is probably about $2 each. Royalties to Sony are probably in the $8 range. You sell at wholesale for $40 so your net per disc is $30. So you need to sell 1,000,000 copies to BREAK EVEN without even considering cost of marketing and sales and product support etc...

okay I never say was cheap to make a game.
Just that make a million or 3 in a day is to ambitious.
For example, MGS3 or Halo 2 were expensive and difficult to develop but in those days, no one expected to have a investment return in one day and the rest of the year profit. Every one have more modest expectations like sell from 5 to 10 millions over a year.

Joystiq: I think you should revise your article to read

"...in the US that would require 50% of (the current) PS3 owners to buy the game..."

I know it seems nitpicky but considering the game still has yet to be released and the install base in the US will increase between now and the release date it would be a more accurate statement with the correction...

Thanks!

"we're certainly curious to know how Konami is going to justify the exclusivity of MGS4 financially."

That is quite an odd statement. Although multiplatform games do benefit from a larger consumer base from which to sell a product to, I would question the overall budget spend for any title regardless of platform availability. I say the above statement is odd because making the title in question multiplatform would have added significantly greater cost to the currently very large budget.

I'm not a statistics expert, Metal Gear player or a magic banana, so I may be wrong. Still... I feel MGS4 will sell SOME PS3. And MGS4 will likely make good money for Konami. BUT, It's unlikely they'll reach that kinda goal talked about. Since I don't actually know the cost of making MGS4, I don't know If they'll NEED to make that kinda cash to pull throught. I also don't think It'll move PS3 into the "Drive" gear. But I'm succeptible to miracles since this generation started...

I dont quite get why they say it will have to sell 1 million copies on day 1. Unless they are saying they need 1 million on day one as well as an additional projected amount over the games retail lifespan to be profitable because if 1 million copies is the break even point it doesn't look good. I would hope a million seller would be at least mildly profitable for Konomi. Maybe Konami borrowed money from a loan shark or something and that is why they need the money on day one.

I believe it just means if they want to make their profit in 1 day it should sell 1 million copies the first day. If total sales for the game is 2 million in whatever timeframe you wish to add they still make their profit. The PS3 install base in the US is about 1.9ish million and Japan should have a much more install base, so i don't see Konami ending up in any financial problems.

Keep in mind though that:

1. Not everyone who has a ps3 is going to buy this game.

2. I wouldn't count on Japan to help this game that much. Console gaming has been in decline for the past few years. If Mario couldn't get even close to a million units in it's first day, I highly doubt that MGS will pull it off.
