Next Tuesday, Japanese Wii owners will be able to download the underrated N64 title Pokémon Snap on the Wii's Virtual Console. Unique to this release, however, will be newly added Wii functionality, setting an interesting precedent for future VC releases.
Dengeki Online reports that photographs taken in-game can be posted to the Wii Message Board, and sent along to friends using the Wii's internet connection. While this isn't a terribly interesting use of the Wii functionality, it does show that Nintendo is willing to add new features to Virtual Console titles. No word yet on when Pokémon Snap will be making its debut in other regions, but could other upcoming VC titles be receiving similar treatment?

The one concern I have... Wii integration being taken advantage of in annoying ways. Like my SMG copy sends me mail about how Luigi is missing. EVERY DAY! So I don't get to play during the weekdays but the Wii glows like some portent of new shit. Nope, just toad sending me a picture of Luigi again. Fuckign annoying. If VC games include Wii integration, let's put that concept to bed immediately.

i like the blue light, personally, but i agree that the mail is annoying.

Yeah, that mail is probably the only bad thing about SMG. The first time I turned the game off after a marathon play session, I had three sets of "Luigi is Missing!/You found Luigi!" messages.

Agree also
I love the Blue Light, but its supposed to be a portent of good news, or an actual message at some point
That's why i made it a point. Whenever Luigi went missing, i would literally drop whatever i was doing and find him again, just to stop that blue light
19 stars to go

I found that receiving the Message Board letters was annoying. Especially since I got the first two Luigi stars without ending the game. Just felt a bit redundant.

Yep, Wong, totally agreed on the Toad Mail Suckage.
I think if you go into your settings you could just turn the light off, but it won't shine for anything else though.
Mail Toad must die.

The extra love and effort for VC title-porting is what makes buying it again worth it.

Heh, Pokemans...I hated this game. I worked my whole summer to get it! Then I beat it in less than a couple of hours! Almost as bad as Pokemon Stadium!
Y'argh!

I can get into a lot of Nintendo's games, Pokemon has never been one of them...

Damn you, Joystiq! I was excitedly thinking of how great this game would be with Wii aimaing, and then I read further to see that it's just Wii message board functionality. I thought I was actually going to buy a VC game. Oh well.

What I want to see is this being done as a standard for at least all Shooting and FPS games like Turok and Duck Hunt, and even the SNES games that used the Super Scope, or games like Mario Paint that used the mouse, so that they all use the Wiimote's pointer in place of that. I'd also kinda like to see Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 done up with the wiimote racing style.

I think they should make Pokemon Hunter where you shoot all the little fuckers!
That would BE HUGE!

*Sniff* so many good memories with that game. I used to play it for hours to get Mew juuust right...
Actually, I'm surprised that more people here besides me have played Tetris Attack. It was really what brought me into gaming, along with Super Mario World and Starfox.
In fact I sometimes still slip it into my SNES and have a 10+ minute match with my younger brother. Even my dad would occasionally join in. Best multiplayer I've ever had.
What I'd give for an online version on the VC...

Seeing as how they've already done an online version on the DS, I could see them doing a WiiWare version, too.

Pokemon Snap! 2 for Wii confirmed.

This isn't new functionality. When Pokemon Snap came out for N64, Nintendo distributed sticker-print kiosks to Japanese convenience stores and American Blockbusters. You plugged your game cartridge into the kiosk, and it would print out your stickers--for a moderate fee.
The odds are that they haven't changed the game's code at all. The game just supports image output, and I guess Nintendo figured it was worth the (probably very minor) effort to make that pre-existing feature interface with the Wii.
It's still a cool precident--if there's a feature already in a game that can interface with the Wii, it looks like Nintendo's going to do it. But this isn't some portent of them adding in new content or features.

This is not an entirely new feature. Does anyone remember the Pokémon Snap Stations at Blockbuster Video rental stores? You would bring your game cartridge (not your memory card) and get prints of your photographed Pokémon. This is probably a way to partially restore that functionality. I think that players could earn rewards somehow, but I don't recall any specifics. If I recall, you could also play a demonstration of the game on a Pokémon Snap Station, because there were two controllers and I remember seeing the standard title screen for the game on the screen. I'm not sure if a special version of the software was running, but I do know that there was a cartridge slot right below the CRT screen.
The station in the following picture/URL is different from the one I saw in person and the ones I saw pictured in Nintendo Power magazine:

WTF-- Sin and Punishment should have been given Wii functionality! Although, I'd probably buy it again if they added it...
