SO I guess that means from now on if a publisher wants a good review score all they need is crappy ads posted all over the site and Gamespot will ensure that the game will get a high score.

Well, I don't have anything on Gamespot, as I've never subscribed to their tripe anyway, but I WILL be adding Eidos to my list of boycotted devs and publishers. I was planning on getting Tomb Raider Anniversary once I got a Wii as well.

I'm already boycotting EA games. I'm sure a lot of you feel the same way I do. As consumers, often our only method to communicate our disdain is by not participating in the retail dance at all. I figure if I worry about where my fruit and veg come from, the least I could do is concern myself with where my games come from too.

Whilst I'll wait for more evidence as to the reason, I would not be the slightest bit surprised if sites that rely on corporate advertising get the pressure put on them by those corporations for good press.

The difference between a good site, and a corporate whore site is their reaction to it.

An no, I won't be buying any more Eidos games if destroying peoples careers is their standard business practice.

If I was EIC of a video game magazine, I would have all the reviewers give scores of 0-10 as usual. I would then divide all scores by 2 and have a 0-5 scale. On a 0-10 scale, 60 should be above average. On a 0-5 scale, a 6 is a 3, not so bad. If the game was as terrible as the guy says, he should have given it a 3/10, a 1.5 on a 5 point scale.

I know I am late but not even a freaking surprise, not even close to a surprise that this has been going on at gamespot. The reviews have just been so bad that you know something was up, I guess he just got tired and decided to do what he thought was best.

I said it before and I will say it again, gaming journalism suffers from no sort of standards being implemented and when people try they are broken down quickly. The game creators control the mouths of the gaming press. And that just shouldn't happen, news papers battle the same problems. I haven't trusted game spot reviews in years.

Gamespot is (was?) the only game review site I visited, and I listened to (and watched) their weekly podcasts religiously. However, the reasons I did so were because I loved Rich Gallup and Jeff Gerstmann. Now that they're both gone... what's keeping me with Gamespot?

Funny, I did the exact same thing. Almost never visit review sites like GameSpot, but a hardcore fan of the HotSpot podcast. Other than listening to the next episode to see how that plays out, my subscription is ending ASAP.

I really REALLY want to give Gamespot the benefit of the doubt on this one, only because I have been a long time fan of their site, especially the reviews. Their reveiews have always been very hard on mediocre games, which I love. IMO their reviews are the best written since Next Generation went out of print.

It would be silly to base purchasing soley upon any of these review sites ESPECIALLY GameSpot. That company is simply about the bottom line period. Whatever it takes. Push sales, preorders, reviews. Whatever makes a buck. It's their right of course, but it's your right to ignore their reviews and take your purchasing elsewhere - as I have done. I won't step foot in a GameSpot shop nor will I bother reading their worthless reviews.

Kerek -

Are you confusing gamespot and gamestop? If so, they are not related. If not, my bad.

As for Jeff, he is always rather negative... heck, he should be a Philadelphian not a left coaster. My guess is CNET will slowly prod the podcast in a more "professional" direction. Think "Buzz Out Loud". Buzz can be harsh, but not simply dissmissive or mean for little more than weak entertainment and/or self indulgence.
Side note, the podcast has been devolving since Gallup left. As for reviews, Jeff is a writer that knows games. Other people do as well. I am rather interested to see some new talent at Gamespot... I mean stop... no, I mean spot.
Last thing - I really hope Edios had nothing to do with this. If so, I like many others will not forget the abuse.

This is sad, that a guy can get fired for reviewing a game honestly. Damn. I'm always surprised how often Nintendo Power will give a bad review to a big Nintendo game, seeing as the parent company wants good PR for their games.

I've devised a wonderful comments reading mini-game! "Find the Nintendo fan!" Sometimes it's easy! Sometimes you have to dig through the paper thin veil of neutrality! It's always fun!!

8.8 was too high for a Game Cube port with waggle. It's sad that people aren't going to remove their biases for the game until the next Zelda comes out; sorta like how Game Cube was a "fine system" until the Wii came out.

Tycho from Penny Arcade weighs in:

"I will tell you the Gerstmann Story as we heard it. Management claimed to have spoken to Jeff about his "tone" before, and no doubt it was this tone that created tensions between their editorial content, the direction of the site, and the carefully crafted relationships that allowed Gamespot to act as an engine of revenue creation. After Gerstmann's savage flogging of Kane & Lynch, a game whose marketing investment on Gamespot alone reached into the hundreds of thousands, Eidos (we are told) pulled hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of future advertising from the site. "

Tomorrow, Kane & Lynch will be in the total top 10 and the score will be horrid. If Eidos had anything to do with the firing, then they deserve what they have unleashed. The current user score is 3.2. If Eidos has not played a hand in any of this, you have to wonder how much longer the current public relations head will have a job.

As an aspiring journalist in college, this disturbs be deeply. Often, there are stories that can't be published in newspapers due to conflicting interest with advertising. It's somewhat of a necessary evil, in order to make money. This is completely different than review content, though. Reviewers aren't supposed to be in companies pockets. Customers money is at stake, unlike in a news story. And if your own damn company doesn't support YOU when YOU stand up for journalistic integrity?? That's fucking maddening.

It's an unwritten rule that your employer in a journalism company is supposed to defend you, no matter what (unless it's obvious your guilty). ESPECIALLY from advertisers. Writers and advertisers fucking hate each other.

This sadly proves to me that video games will never be seen as a realistic form of journalism.

The guys from penny-arcade really have no leg to stand on as any bastion of credibility because of said defacto when they bitched out how horrible one of ubisofts game was and ubisoft smacked them with the hand of god, yet when the jade raymond comic came out not even a nary of word on their forums or from the two sold out bought out guys themselves. what you dont know is the fact that Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins, both sold out their fans and their reputation to ensure they ass kiss long enough so they can rake in the $$ since they have kids and get all the free stuff and this hollywood fame they enjoy having. penny-arcade just like ctrl alt del etc all at one time were just normal guys until they became douche bags who think they are holier than thou.

Tone. It is about tone and intent. Perhaps CNET would have been fine with him simply pointing out flaws in a nice bland manner, but of course that would go against all that the big man seems to represent. Thus, the impasse and subsequent gossip explosion that is so rare in the realm of geekdom, but so commom for our mothers and sisters, continues to expand.

- I think I need a sandwich to get through this.

Do you know what? I think 1up would be the best place for Jeff to work. Think about it: they don't kowtow to anybody, journalistic integrity is always at the heart of whatever they do, and they review games however they want, not how fanboys will want them to.

Jeff's style fits this exactly.

WRITE AN EMAIL TO CNET'S SALES TEAM, NOW!

E-mail I just sent to sales@cnet.com:

To whom it may concern,

I am writing on behalf of Pixelmagic Gaming, an up and coming development house based right outside of Dallas, Texas. We are currently developing a new, original flight fighter game, tentatively titled "Twin Tigers".

What we're looking to do with this IP is to bring back fun to flight games, hearkening to the days of Afterburner and Starfox. So many modern day flight games are either too technical or too "kiddie" for our tastes.

That said, we would like to run a series of banner ads on your site next year closer to our game's release, most likely Q3 2008.

Please let us know what kind of payment plan you have. I am pretty sure we can get some kind of banner for $10k, but does that include a couple points? For the review, I mean? How much would, say, 3 banners w/video, and a guaranteed 8.0 or higher score cost? Our company has unlimited funds at our disposal, so just name the price and we will send all manner of money, swag, and women of ill repute to your headquaters.

Now keep in mind if you post a negative review of our game, we WILL pull all advertising funds. So make sure you get someone disposable to handle the review.

Please contact me at your earliest convenience with your preferences (blonde, brunette?) and your payment plan. If necessary we will pay in cash, unmarked small bills.

Sincerely,
Everyone on the Internet Hates You Now

PS: Next time just wire funds directly to IGN and 1up, it will be less painful.

I sick of Reviewers and their negitive spins. Make a game that gets a perfect score then I'd be willing to hear you bitch and moan about every little thing wrong with the game. Try and be constructive with your reviews ~not just rant how it isn't perfect. One review bitch about how he had to point the control away from the screen to reload -thus losing his aim in a light gun game. Hello! light gun games have always been that way JERK! I would rather listen to the consumer reviews.

Jeff Gerstmann's so called firing and removal of all things related to Kane and Lynch could just be the biggest video game marketing scheme to get loads of free publicity for a game or even GameStop. After all is said and done he may end up a lot better off then he was toiling away for GameStop. My son always enjoyed his reviews, but it didn't mean he always agreed with him. This was a review, it's one person's personal opinion of something they are reviewing. It doesn't mean it has to be a rubber stamp approval of what’s being reviewed or that anyone else has to agree with it. I don't know how many times I've seen a review trashing something and the general public still embraced whatever it was and made it a winner. On the other hand maybe the game can be improved from constructive criticism. No One or Thing is beyond improving; we all need a little tweak now and then, even the best of US!

always been the same. I remember back in the 80's mags like Zzap 64 used to get heat off the then big games publishers for giving honest reviews. And even then an average review score was 70%. Average is 50% or 5 out of 10! Let's see those scores happening!
