File this under "straight out of left field" -- Activision, the publishing powerhouse behind the Call of Duty and Tony Hawk series; and Vivendi Games, owner of Blizzard Entertainment, which you probably don't need us to tell you is behind the Warcraft and Starcraft series, are coming together to form "the world's most profitable games business," cleverly named Activision Blizzard.
The reports we've read so far seem to confuse the matter of Vivendi's role in the merger, and who will be "wearing the pants" in the relationship, so to speak. As we understand it, Vivendi and Activision will be the ones who are merging, despite Blizzard's name being in the company's new moniker. Vivendi will own approximately 52% of the ownership stake in Activision Blizzard, though Activision's current CEO, Bobby Kotick, will take the chief executive position in the new company.
Jean-Bernard Lévy, Vivendi's chief executive, expressed his excitement about the supercollision -- "We look forward to being an active and supportive majority stockholder in a company that is poised to lead the worldwide interactive entertainment industry in the years ahead."
We'll be sure to keep you updated as soon as we get a clearer understanding of the details of the merger. No doubt the internet will be abuzz with industry analysts chiming in about the ramifications of this huge business deal. We predict to see elves on skateboards by first quarter 2008, but we'll leave the conjecture up to the big dogs.
Update - 6:00PM EST: Worried about WoW? Blizzard wants to brush your hair and tell you everything is going to be alright. Also, the Vivendi Games/Activision management team will hold an investor conference call tomorrow at 8:30 in the morning, EST. We'll make sure to keep you updated on the full details of the merged company's future plans, should they arise during the meeting.
Update - 8:15PM EST: GameSetWatch's Simon Carless analyzes the combination of the two gaming colossi.
Update 12/3/07 - 11AM EST: We've written up our notes from this morning's Activision Blizzard conference call.

as long as starcraft 2 does not get messed up, or Blizzard gets too much corporate meddling, I don't see what could go bad. Vivendi hasn't done too bad...

I love these 2 companies. Now, Blizzard can poop out more games. Neither company has failed me. EA, has failed me!

I know WoW is big and all, but Vivendi owns other companies besides Blizzard.

I know WoW is huge and everything, but shouldn't they take the Vivendi name and not the Blizzard one?
Then they could be called Vivision.

Vivendi is not merging the parent company with Activision. It is merging Vivendi Games with Activision (yes, that includes Blizzard). Vivendi, the parent company, is buying a controlling stake in Activision (partially "paying" Activision by giving them the Vivendi Games unit). Is that more clear? Probably not.

Maybe I'm just an optimist (I'm not btw :) ) but I don't think Blizzard's image or product will be tainted by this one bit.
Their track record and cache in the industry speaks for itself. I also think it is that same track record that will give even the most arrogant executive from Activision pause in tinkering with such a well oiled machine.
At least I think if I had a box that spit out money I wouldn't try to open it up and tinker with it. Would you? :)

People are missing one huge statement:
“This transaction also provides a unique relationship with Universal Music Group – the world’s largest music company – which will benefit Guitar Hero and further extend our sizable leadership position in music-based games.”
So, Vivendi gets a piece of the World of Warcraft pie, and Guitar Hero III gets a music publisher equal to Rock Band’s MTV partnership.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Vivendi already owned World of Warcraft prior to this merger.
Beyond Universal Music Group, there's also NBC and Universal Studios, which I'm sure will tie in software properties via Activision Blizzard.
Guitar Hero (or subsequent music properties) could benefit from ties to Universal, but I'm sure they won't limit themselves to just Universal.

This sucks, this is probably going to hurt Steam. Vivendi (which owned Valve's publisher Sierra) has bad blood with Valve over the creation of Steam, but Activision has several of their titles available on Steam. So, I guess Activision's support of Steam is going to completely dry up. And might even have negative effects on the current releases like ET:QW not getting future patches.

By the way... “Activision Blizzard“? What kind of ASS name is that?! Call it something a little more clever... like "Blizzard Vision".

They joined beacuse WOrld of Warcraft and Cod4 are currently the most played games by a MASSIVE margin.. also A SHITLOAD of people are quiting WoW atm... like 100,000 a month.. because of all the new games coming out..
i think blizzard/vevindi have seen that wow is coming to a end over the next 2 years. And whant to keep the Blizzard brand a POWERHOUSE across all levels of gaming.. Honestly if i see blizzard on any game i would pay for it.. and thats the same for most WoW players i'm sure. WoW has created new gamers.. (lots of people play wow as there first real hardcore game) so now they will earn money off that new group.

You guys are giving way too much credit to this merger; it's just a merger made for financial reasons, and it's most likely not going to ruin any games you enjoy.

Vivendi Universal sucks ass.
It was bad enough they owned Blizzard, now they own Activision too?
The same assholes who pulled their content from the iTunes store. The same assholes who brought you the HD format war by being the only major label not to release on BluRay (no longer true as of September though).
This company has absolutely no reticence about fucking with the customer if they have a harebrained idea that they think might increase their bottom line.
It's too bad. Very very sad.

May be with this deal Activision will be able to bring WOW to the PS3 & 360 too. Now if so both comapnies are going to make a lot more money. Plus this could help bring more PC games to the PS3 & 360 also.

Proof positive that that were wasn't a damn thing that mattered at Vivendi except for Blizzard.
I don't honestly see this changing anything substantially except Guitar Hero, perhaps. I doubt anyone would fuck with Blizzard (the developer, not the rechristened publisher) except Blizzard itself. It's just that big.
Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if the name morphed into simply "Blizzard" in a few years.
