I'm a Nintendo fanboy and I think 8.8 is a great score. Maybe I would have scored it half a point higher, but big deal.

I do take issue with the asshats at NTSC uk who gave MP3 a 6 months after it was released and managed to drag its metacritic score below 9 for a short period. There is absolutely no way that game is a 6, to anyone who doesn't flat out despise FPSs to begin with.

Well, GameSpot is now in contention for greatest PR disaster of the year award.

Already on the list...

Sony temporarily banning Kotaku from events for posting a rumor about Home just days before the official announcement.

And multiple reports of Microsoft console hardware failures before the problem was officially acknowledged and handled.

Locking down user ratings for the game in question is adding another foot or so to the grave Gamespot is digging itself into.

Damn...

When does "APPROACHING SOUND BARRIER!"

ever sound more useful than right now!

Oh by the way, those of you who feel they are "tired of this now" this is huge. If he was fired in fact for all or most of the reasons that the rumors are suggesting, this is big. It'll go down and could in return affect more than just gamespot. There is more at stake here than just Gamespot, this is game journalism people!

I wish the young people of america would band together for something that's actually important. (That isn't videogame related)(Like a certain W*R that's going on right now)

But hey! videogames are the most important thing in the world right?

Sorry, but the only thing that would make young people band together on an issue not relating to videogames, is if the Government decided to ban Doritos.

What a surprise that you'd find people coming together over injustice in the video game world at A VIDEO GAME WEBSITE.

Seriously, take a second, think about what you've just said. Then, take your palm, and push it against your head. And keep it there for a little while.

The guy above me makes a good point. Go to a political forum and expect similar levels of fanboyism and shoutings about war and such.

But it would be good if there was some big anti-war thing that (a lot of) kids would enjoy. Refusal to join the army or even go to school. Would only work en masse though.

Don't be a dick. Plenty of people are speaking up against the war. It's not like it's hush hush. I can guarantee there's more than 11,000 actively voicing their disgust with the 'war' going on right now. Well more than that if you count the internet. Thing is, we could unite as a nation against the war (which hey, we pretty much have if you check Bush's approval rating) and nothing will change. Backlash against a company / corporation though can actually effect them, since public relations is huge in any industry.

So the difference between fighting against the war and fighting against this is huge. One you just spend a few minutes online bitching about to raise awareness and actually impact something, or the other you can dedicate all your free time to fighting and it won't change a thing because Bush will do what Bush wants to do, regardless of what the masses want. Sucks that his got a second term in office and drove our country further into shit, but that's almost at an end.

The difference is that politics affects everybody in a hugely substantial way, while video game reviews affect virtually nobody in any meaningful way.

Seriously, don't the rest of us have priorities?

I am a gamspot moderator I can catagorically say that it is not true that we have been told to "squelch any discussion of the controversy". All we have done is tried to localise the discussion in one place to stop it totaly overwhelming the boards. AS we do with any big news story or review.

I had stopped going to gamespot a while ago. I'd pop my head in every now and then to see what a big game got for a score, but it's been on the decline for a while now.
That being said, this news is a big deal. I could affect many other sites, some that may have nothing to do with videogames. I love seeing my fellow gamers getting together and showing what their numbers can actually accomplish.
It's time these corporate assholes stop looking at everything as a paycheck, and start treating people like customers.

Hmm...
Even if it is a coincidence, it's one really ugly coincidence.
Guy gives a mediocre score for a game. Said game is being plastered all over the site. Guy gets fired.

Had he been fired after giving a very positive score to a game, it would've just looked weird.

That wouldn't exactly look weird, we'd just assume he pulled a prank on the President of the company or was being too much of a shithead and they wanted him gone.

On topic:
But that's not the case, and it appears as if the guy got fired for doing his job the CORRECT WAY. If we can't trust a GAME REVIEW SITE to give us accurate and unbiased reviews, we have to try and change it. We just have to. It's not about games or journalism, necessarily, it's about them lying to us.

So to all the haters of this topic up there, ask yourself: "Did I just flame people for not happily being lied to?"

And then get a divorce or break up with your significant other, because you're the kind of person who gets cheated on.

Wow, giving a bunch of 1.0's to a game is surely a revolutionary idea of protest. I mean way to go GameSpot users. That's what I call being progressive.

I can't wait to hear this official response. I'll die laughing if K&L isn't involved.

Of course, then you'll have a bunch of Gerstmann fanboys say that whatever response is given is a 'cover-up' or a 'conspiracy' or something.

Shouldn't have brought politics into it....time for me to make some enemies in here.

I support our troops, therefore I support this war. If you don't support the war yet say to support our troops..then your a hypocrite. I'm not a fan of Bush and most of the things he's done so don't think I'm kissing his ass. After all, I am a independant conservative and a huge fan of michael savage. Yes I'm being seroius about this (by now one of you should know that rarely I kid around).

With that said, now I'm interested in what Mr. Gerstmann has to say on tuesday.

Bullshit, "this is how it is with anyone who has a job." I'm pretty sure Gerstmann didn't work for Eidos when he was fired, but Gamespot. He was paid to do a review on a game, and he gave what he felt was a proper review. If Gamespot didn't like the review, fine. Tell him to edit. Tell him to change it. But when Eidos is grumbling about a bad review because they happen to advertise with Gamespot and you immediately FIRE said employee because he wrote a review that wasn't favourable to their game? Sorry, but that never happened with any job *I* ever had.

Here's an idea - maybe Eidos should, like, NOT make shit games, and then they won't get shit reviews.

Actually that comment is right, what Arron thomas said I mean, this does happen in the work space. Try saying shit publicly about your boss or any major buyers and see what happens. You won't last long. For a country that boasts about it's "free speech" it's kinda sad that you can't even give your opinion on your employers.

Just as an outside observer, has anyone else noticed that GameSpot didn't appear to have a plan for all of this? It would appear the decision was made in haste, either the day of or night before.

The reason I mention this, don't you think they would have handled it better *IF* they had a plan? Like make other arrangements for 'On the Spot' which was to air that night with Gerstmann. And if management did know about this WAY ahead of time, then they're poor managers for letting it get so out of hand or anticipating that something MIGHT happen. Jeff is an on-air personality, who has been at GameSpot for years. You lose someone like that, you plan for some sort of transition FIRST.

Whatever was the reason for letting him go, I'm thinking by the way it was handled, it was done without planning.

Just wanna add my piece. I had (have) an old gamespot account. I have long moved on from using them as a reference for game reviews. I wait for the meta and nega reviews :)
Anyways the point is I actually logged in to my gamespot acount after over a year of not using it ONLY to delete it. What do I find out? You can't delete a free account.
Yes that is correct. They keep you email. I changed/deleted all my personal info and canceled all email contact from them, also changed my email they had on register and changed the password to some gobbledygook.
Now that I think about it, I should have just posted lots of furry pron and gotten banned....
