Those hoping that the PS2 port of the Sega Saturn classic NiGHTS would be released outside of Japan may be out of luck. Takashi Iizuka -- producer, director, and lead game designer on the Wii-sclusive NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams -- recently spoke with Sega Nerds about all things NiGHTS.When asked about the PS2 enhanced port of the original NiGHTS Into Dreams, Iizuka commented that at present, the title is only scheduled for release in Japan, and that there are no plans to bring the title to other regions, or, for that matter, to the Nintendo Wii.
Iizuka also commented that the PS2 port was the direct result of a high demand for the game in Japan. Given that, it's still possible that solid sales of the NiGHTS sequel might inspire releases of the original in more regions. Let's keep the hope alive.

I played it at an in-store kiosk back in the day, and I don't really see what's so interesting about a flying jester.

You really have to play the game to see how good it was.
Seriously, what the hell is the point of that comment?
At the time, the game had brought a some what revolutionary control scheme to the console. I won’t say it brought it to all consoles, especially with Playstation coming on the rise. Anyways, the controller had allowed semi 360 movement, (the controller itself became the backbone of the Sega Dreamcast controller) If anything, think of it as a giant Super Mario 64 Winged Cap level game. With different quirks and puzzle to fly through each level. The game itself was pretty fun to play. Altogether the execution and soundtrack was fitting.
The story was basically this: you’re the jester Nights and you lap around the level three times collecting spheres called ideas. You’re main goal is to defeat the Nightmare at the end of each level to uh… make the two main characters get over their fears and kick ass in their goals.
It's a game to experience as much as to play

Not that thats a bad thing: to expect excellence. But given the franchise and the directing its been going, sonic rush is a breath of fresh air from the roots of sonic.
Also luckily, I own a Saturn, NiGHTS, and Christmas NiGHTS.
And to anyone doubting this game is a masterpiece, it really just has an amazing magic to it, between the characters, music, cinematics, and gameplay. It really makes you feel both free and under insane pressure at the same time. And the "good" final endings will put a smile on your face.

Shining Wisdom, SCUD: Disposible Assassin, Mr. Bones, Virtual On, Daytona USA, Virtual Cop, etc.
By far, my favourite system of all time.
2. Although the plot was good, SCUD is a horrible game, with bad controls, eye-hurting pixelated sprites, and very uninspired shooting levels.
Actually, I just love the music the game had. Don't know why exactly.
Sigh, oh to be young again.

PS2 has a userbase of 120+ million.
They're putting the new game on wii.
How to get 120+ million customers to look at the new console with the new game? Re-release the old game on the console with the highest base.
This probably seems obvious to the rest of you, but its my afternoon epiphany.

Are saying that he should have said 'why didn't they put it on PS2 in the first place'? As in the console that didn't even exist until several years later?

It is like saying that. It is also completely true. There are games that are still good even when compared to their modern equivalents. DN3D and maybe NiGHTS (I don't know, I've never played it) are games that in retrospect, are not very good.
Nostalgia factor doesn't make games better.

Some 360 games lack region locking, but not all.
Wii is completely region-locked.
DS, PSP, and just about every portable before them lacked region locks.
Just presenting a bit of truth to ya.
The others, of course, are much more region-neutral in their releases
