So let me get this straight: It's a parent's decision, but only if they make the choice that either you or the government wants them to make.

I LOVED Killer7! But really, was it that violent of a game? Was it even a game? I got mindf***ed so hard, I think Killer7 is violently confusing more than anything.

"Why pick and choose games when the ESRB has been kind enough to slap an M on the cover, giving parents adequate warning in the first place?"

Because politicians, especially the ones from Detroit, are far too stupid to figure that out.

Okay let's set a few things straight here...

-Yes, it's funny this person included a lot of old games, or games with a long enough series that naming it doesn't mean anything. Ha.

-Worthy is just trying to help, as misguided as the list is.

-Anyone with a GTA tattoo is a loser

-I personally find GTA harder to play than many other more violent games. It's not that it's THAT VIOLENT, just that a lot of the violence is directed at police and civilians. I'm not saying it's wrong, just I'd rather feel like a good guy while playing most games.

Okay, let's get some things straight

1) You make vast assumptions based on what a person says that's directed to another

2) You can't seem to distinguish political cynicism (which wasn't even meant to be half-serious in the first place)

3) You're a member of the grammar police
I'll refer you here: http://www.cracked.com/article_15664_9-words-that-dont-mean-what-you-think.html

4) You really love to list things

This politician is obviously not doing what the taxpayers are asking for her to do. Instead of tackling the real issues of crime (education, poverty, family morals, etc) she goes for a cheap shot. She doesn't have the answers to the problems in her city. So to make herself still seem valuable to the voter, she instills fear by focusing attention on a non-issue. Those taxpayers are wasting their money by keeping her in office, and she knows it. This goes for all politicians who make the same argument she does.

So I'll say again, DUMB, STUPID, B!TC#

Besides, doesn't it feel insulting to you that these people believe you'll turn into some raving psycho because you played GTA? Kinda insults your intelligence.

Speaking as someone that lives in the 313, if they want to ban a game that leads to violence, drug dealing, and solve our ills, they need to ban the playing of basketball in the middle of the street.

Also, if anyone knows anything about the economy in Detroit specifically (the surrounding areas are not so bad), there is a reason most of these games are so old.

I'm pretty sure that this woman doesn't expect to stop crime all around the world by publishing this list. That people here would accuse or otherwise imply that she does are using a strawman in place of a real counter-point.

I mean, who does it hurt that a list of violent video games is simply being published? If you're over 18 this isn't a problem and if you're under 18, tough crap, either prove to your parents that you're smart enough to rationally separate pixels from people or stick to Pikachu and Mario until you're old enough.

Detroit has a lot of problems based on a failing American Auto Industry and racial strife, which culminates in crime. If this list keeps one bullet out of some teenager's skull, then it's worth little Timmy crying over not being able to Finish the Fight this Christmas.

"if you're under 18, tough crap, either prove to your parents that you're smart enough to rationally separate pixels from people"

Unfortunately, even if someone under 18 can prove that to their parents (not a tall order BTW, you'd have to be really fucking dumb to not know pixels from people), then there are a lot of people (such as "Todd" above) who would take that and make BS claims like "She's a dumb unfit mother just because she decided Timmy was intelligent".

"Detroit has a lot of problems based on a failing American Auto Industry and racial strife, which culminates in crime."

Yes, so the problem is this politician's thinly-veiled attempt to scapegoat videogames instead of crime's real reasons such as the ones you just pointed out.

"If this list keeps one bullet out of some teenager's skull,"

That's one hell of a giant "if". How the heck is this list going to stop anyone from being shot? You might as well say "A butterfly flapping its wings in Amsterdam COULD conceivably lead to a series of events that results in a kid getting shot in Compton, therefore we should get rid of butterflies." If someone gets shot in Detroit it's not going to be because nobody put a handful of M-rated games on some list.

If we let stupid shit get through, then before long the stuff we consider important now will be classified as stupid shit in the future. There will always be some liberty that under attack that isn't as important as another one that is under attack. After the lesser one was squashed, the next on the list can be focused on because there are more imporant things to worry about. There will always be more important things to worry about until there is only one thing left.

I think they should just get rid of the ESRB. Its crazy how I can buy my my cigarettes without being id but I have to show my id when I buy m games (I show it them, but it still gets a bit annoying).

Someone could be mugged for their violent videogames.
Either way I am sick of this bullshit scapegoating as a cover for parents who are too stupid to pay attention to what their children are doing.

I worked in a video game store and would get yelled at by white-trash parents constantly for asking if they really wanted to by an M rated game for their elementary school child.

To answer your question, Joystiq, because people are stupid. Really. I mean the majority of people in America with enough sense and intelligence to figure this out is probably about 25% of people aged 25-45. Anything outside of that agegroup (the older ones) and that drops drastically.

Use this simple test to see what I mean. Go to a store that has self checkout lanes (Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Grocery Stores, etc.) and see who is using those self check-out lanes instead of waiting in line. See who tends to have enough trouble with the machines that requires the attendant to come over and help (not for looking at IDs or things like that).

Every single word she said is true. GTA and the 50 Cent game are a bane on our society, the reeson why crime is SO HIGH! So all you who answered "Drug related crimes" and "withspread of illegal guns" (BUZZ!)incorrect! We all know Detroit became violent only AFTER 3D graphics, right?

I like how they think the parents of these "future" criminals are upstanding concerned parents when in fact they are simply couch dwelling weed smoking criminals. They don't care what their kids play or how they do in school. They are ignorant and selfish and pass those traits on to their offspring. Deadbeats raising deadbeats cannot be fixrd in the usual "make the parents care" way.

We should sterilize anyone that thinks like this (not just games, but Government should raise our kids in general). Anyone that utters "it takes a village" should get snipped. That way, they won't have to worry about the kids because they won't be having any.

A lot of these teenage killers that this person is speaking of preventing come from white, middle-class families with good moral values. A lot of it has to do with lack of supervision because both parents work. A lot of parents feel guilty because of that and give their kids whatever they want. Does not raise the best, grounded people in the world. I completely disagree with your deadbeat parent idea. Deadbeat parents raise two-bit criminals, not like what we saw at Columbine (not saying it was caused by video games, but by lack of supervision).

You know, two working white middle class parents can still be deadbeat parents if they don't put any effort into raising their children.

----

that’s too funny. so, video games are making detroit the bastion of evil? check out this list: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6167468.html

cities with the most video games per capita. top of the list? must be detroit!

nope. it’s salt lake.

damn all those violent lds folks!

tho, detroit does make a showing on the list down in the middle between the body bad filling cities of charleston and columbus.

what about the most violent city in america? st. louis? not even on the list.

so, exactly how does that reconcile with anything kim worthy has to say?

Seriously, as a resident of the Metro Detroit area, I think--nay, I KNOW--video games should be the LEAST of our priorities. Video games only become a problem if you can A) afford the games and B) get to the store and back without getting shot/stabbed/mugged. Okay, okay, I'm exaggerating quite a bit on the last one, but come on: there are bigger, more realistic, albeit less entertaining fish to fry.

And of course, Detroit's crime problem has NOTHING to do with the fact that the mayor is a mobster who blows all the city's cash on bling for himself and his family.

You want to understand why Detroit is the #1 most dangerous city in America again? Look to the day Kwame Kilpatrick was elected and count down from there.

I'm very glad I got out of there before Detroit's "renovation" began. The greedy thugs running the city are about to renovate it into the third ring of hell.
