PC users who haven't yet experienced Tetsuya Mizuguchi's rhythm-based puzzle game can finally enjoy the genre-straddling title from the comfort of their own computers. Wild Tangent and Q Entertainment have teamed up to offer a PC version of Lumines, as part of Wild Tangent's library of downloadable game offerings.
The PC version of Lumines -- which appears to be based on the PSP title Lumines II -- features multiple modes of play, a skin editing mode, and online score ranking. Players can buy the full game for $19.99 USD, pay on a per-play basis using Wild Tangent's subscription model, or play a free ad-supported version of the game.

I don't know about them currently, but Wild Tangent used to be borderline spyware I think.

You think correctly, though I also cannot say whether they do or not anymore.

I can't even believe that Wild Tangent is still around. They used to release "games" that amounted to little more than a small cache of spyware / malware. Installing one of these piles would almost guarantee a full system re-install a few days later.
I'd stay away - far away - from anything they publish. Even if it is something decent, like Lumines.

Why do people refer to this game as a "rhythm-based" puzzle? I have played countless hours of this game and i never once relied on rhythm to get me through. I guess getting all of the 200 achievement points was all luck on my part.

i'd call it a trance puzzler. sometimes i get "in the zone" playing lumines and kind of scare myself. i'd be biting my lip and crossing my eyes. then i'd realize what i was doing and snap out of it. (i'm a better player in the trance) but sound is a very integral part of the gameplay; without the music and sound fx, its not very entrancing.

I really have to recommend Lumines Plus on PS2.
You can find it pretty cheap used.
I used to own a PSP and Lumines was my favorite game. The PS2 version is basically the same, but with a few new skins and you can plug in another controller and battle. Great puzzle game for my girlfriend and I.
I have been debating on getting Lumines Live from XBLA, but I don't like that you have to buy extra packs to have a complete game, and that the original soundtrack isn't there.

sadly PQ is still majorly broken even after all the great fixes from the previously seriously broken handheld versions...
plus people just quit on multiplayer since it ends in a draw... sad

They seem to be okay now -- but I'm running Vista, not sure what would install on XP (there's no new services, or processes running on my computer after installing it). During the install it had a little message that said All Wild Tangent Games are Spyware free..."guaranteed". Maybe they changed their tune?

They probably just have a different definition of "spyware" than the rest of us.
My anti-virus dinged a couple of times during the installation of the uninstall file. I thought that was very strange.

I've been wanting to play this for ages... but i'd just pressed the install button when i thought "Wild Tangent sounds worryingly familiar to me".
A quick googling showed that they aren't very well respected and are generally considered malware. A WARNING WOULD BE NICE IN FUTURE JOYSTIQ!
So, time to delete the sandbox until i can find more info. Thank god for sandboxie!!
