Lumines now available on PC
PC users who haven't yet experienced Tetsuya Mizuguchi's rhythm-based puzzle game can finally enjoy the genre-straddling title from the comfort of their own computers. Wild Tangent and Q Entertainment have teamed up to offer a PC version of Lumines, as part of Wild Tangent's library of downloadable game offerings.
The PC version of Lumines -- which appears to be based on the PSP title Lumines II -- features multiple modes of play, a skin editing mode, and online score ranking. Players can buy the full game for $19.99 USD, pay on a per-play basis using Wild Tangent's subscription model, or play a free ad-supported version of the game.

I don't know about them currently, but Wild Tangent used to be borderline spyware I think.
SAGExSDX @ Dec 4th 2007 2:53PM
which is why ive been avoiding even trying any versions of this on pc. it was a downer when i heard it was coming from them.
Rususeruru @ Dec 4th 2007 6:12PM
You think correctly, though I also cannot say whether they do or not anymore.
SoulBlade @ Dec 4th 2007 2:54PM
This game is great for the PSP - I don't know if I could play it on an actual console/PC - feels better suited for the handhelds to me.

I can't even believe that Wild Tangent is still around. They used to release "games" that amounted to little more than a small cache of spyware / malware. Installing one of these piles would almost guarantee a full system re-install a few days later.
I'd stay away - far away - from anything they publish. Even if it is something decent, like Lumines.

My first thought was "All right!".
Then I saw Wild Tangent.
No way I will touch this, I don't want to be digging through my registry trying to remove spyware for the next week, thanks anyway

WILD TANGENT am cry.

I really have to recommend Lumines Plus on PS2.
You can find it pretty cheap used.
I used to own a PSP and Lumines was my favorite game. The PS2 version is basically the same, but with a few new skins and you can plug in another controller and battle. Great puzzle game for my girlfriend and I.
I have been debating on getting Lumines Live from XBLA, but I don't like that you have to buy extra packs to have a complete game, and that the original soundtrack isn't there.

Why do people refer to this game as a "rhythm-based" puzzle? I have played countless hours of this game and i never once relied on rhythm to get me through. I guess getting all of the 200 achievement points was all luck on my part.
SoulBlade @ Dec 4th 2007 3:41PM
yea i didn't rely on rhythm either.
colin @ Dec 4th 2007 8:14PM
i'd call it a trance puzzler. sometimes i get "in the zone" playing lumines and kind of scare myself. i'd be biting my lip and crossing my eyes. then i'd realize what i was doing and snap out of it. (i'm a better player in the trance) but sound is a very integral part of the gameplay; without the music and sound fx, its not very entrancing.
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Dec 4th 2007 3:48PM
Wow, I'm really bad at lumines.
gonk @ Dec 4th 2007 3:57PM
i played the demo of this on xlive, it's decent but certainly passable
puzzle fighter and puzzle quest rule though :)
driven2sin @ Dec 4th 2007 11:55PM
sadly PQ is still majorly broken even after all the great fixes from the previously seriously broken handheld versions...
plus people just quit on multiplayer since it ends in a draw... sad

They seem to be okay now -- but I'm running Vista, not sure what would install on XP (there's no new services, or processes running on my computer after installing it). During the install it had a little message that said All Wild Tangent Games are Spyware free..."guaranteed". Maybe they changed their tune?
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Dec 4th 2007 4:44PM
They probably just have a different definition of "spyware" than the rest of us.
My anti-virus dinged a couple of times during the installation of the uninstall file. I thought that was very strange.
TheWarden @ Dec 4th 2007 6:14PM
Oh gawd, WildTangent? The worst. Shoots self.
No thanks. Who made the decision to go with them?
Rususeruru @ Dec 4th 2007 6:15PM
Funny that all the comments in this one will and are just Wild Tangent? err.... I dunno
ThornedVenom @ Dec 4th 2007 7:05PM
Lumines for PC = win
Available from WebTangent = AIDS
ALH @ Dec 5th 2007 5:29AM
i cancelled my download midway through because everyone was saying bad things about wild tangent. Its been so long since i last got a non-indy PC game that i'm not clued up on spywares, thanks commenters!
t_m @ Dec 5th 2007 9:29AM
I've been wanting to play this for ages... but i'd just pressed the install button when i thought "Wild Tangent sounds worryingly familiar to me".
A quick googling showed that they aren't very well respected and are generally considered malware. A WARNING WOULD BE NICE IN FUTURE JOYSTIQ!
So, time to delete the sandbox until i can find more info. Thank god for sandboxie!!
Nhex @ Dec 15th 2007 8:09PM
Wow... So I went through the trouble of installing this, and it immediately crashes within 2 minutes of the game starting. WTG, Wild Tangent! Is there anyway to play this outside of WT?
