Today GameTap released its new player which adds many general improvements, the most significant of which is full Mac compatibility. The updated version will allow for faster navigation and play, and is cleaner and better integrated with all of GameTap.com.
After downloading the Mac player, all of the service's games will be available to you, with the exception of the "Windows" games (duh). By going to the "search games" area and clicking the "playable on Mac" box on the right side, you'll see a list of titles available for Macs specifically. Although a significant portion of the GameTap catalog gets lost here (including marquee games like Sam & Max), it seems Mac owners will have to take what they can get. The Apple core here at Joystiq is just excited to be in on the gaming smorgasbord.

Oregon Trail is indeed available on GameTap. They have some of the sequels as well.

Full mac compatabily is a little off, it only runs on Intel based machines according to the site.

Well, that doesn't mean it's not fully compatible with Mac OS -- just that it needs newer Intel hardware to run. Frustrating for PowerPC owners? Sure. But that Intel hardware is also the only reason any of these projects are ever seeing the light of day on the Mac.

Yeah, I understand that. Its annoying that my PPC machine is useless when it comes to things like this, but It's pretty much the reason I have a PC too.

As a PowerPC Mac user, I'm going on record as "frustrated."

Sorry for breaking it to you, but the future of Mac is Intel.

It's GameTap, there's TWO Carmen Sandiego's and THREE Oregon Trails. I personally prefer the 5th edition, it has a lovely rosette.

Great! Mac users can play Myst... again.

Correct the article. Gametap considers it "Full Mac" compatibility but it will not work on Power PC macs. That is not "Full Mac."

Just because it doesn't run on all Macs doesn't mean it's not "full Mac" compatible.
Does Crysis run on every PC?

Woot for bringing games to the Mac! If you like games, you deserve access to them. =)

As someone who once worked for GT's tech support, I've heard that it (at least used to) run well in wine.
Keep in mind only worked back when gt first launched, so no promises.

@WedgeTalon: Wine's AppDB currently lists GameTap as not operational, so it probably no longer works. That said, it's a damn shame because we Linux folks are starved for commercial games and as much as we hate paying for things, I think there could be a good chunk of business to corner there.

hmmm... baby steps...
at east now i can log in as a guest... but my TapID still doesn't work from Japan.. and you need a TapID to play M rated games...
So i still can't finish Hitman, which i started just before they decided to block access from outside the US.
Its like people keep dangling candy infront of me, but its always out of reach...
