The internet has been all a-titter recently over the rumor that Sega might be getting back into the console manufacturing business. The source of this rumor is an updated trademark application for "Dreamcast," which overlaps with the current trademark filing for the title, set to expire in December 2009.
At best, this rumor is a stretch. Renewing trademarks is a common practice for companies, and any overlap between previous filings and updates can be attributed to the indeterminable amount of time between filing and proper registration of those trademarks.
To either confirm or deny the speculation, GameDaily contacted Sega for an official response, and while PR rep Charlie Scibetta was unsure of why the trademark was updated, he did state that Sega has no intentions of re-entering the console business. According to Scibetta, Sega's quite content with their current platform-agnostic status, and it would be unwise to shift their business strategy during a period of "outstanding growth." Sadly, it seems like this rumor might be little more than smoke and mirrors. Of course, we're always happy to be proven wrong.

i was a pretty big sega fan back in the day but there is no way they are coming back with another console. Hell, look at the piece of shit games they have been releasing for the last 3 years or so. Seriously, what was the last good game sega released?

This may just be connected with them putting the Dreamcast's various titles on other platforms. Chu Chu Rocket DS with Nintendo WFC play FTW!

32X-failure, Saturn-failure, Dreamcast-failure and now even their games = failure. Sega peaked a long time ago.

How about a hardware update that somehow makes every current system backwards compatible with DC discs?

Microsoft is working with them to try to get some credit and popularity in Japan. Sega is a big name over there.
LOL, you heard it here first!

I think the last good Sega games were released in 2003... Outrun 2 was fun... Virtua Fighter 4 : Evo and Panzer Dragoon Orta were very good... And before that, I think you have to go back to the Dreamcast era. The last Sega Rally looks fun, if you like arcade racers... and that's it. An average of less than one good game a year. After the Sega scream, the Sega murmur...
Still, I hope the Dreamcast games will come back in a way (VC) or another (Xbox Live)...

As much as I loved my dreamcast (and my game gear) back in the days, I will never buy another Sega console again.
Why? Got tired of always picking up the console with the shortest lifespan.

I would love to see this happen: Sega is Merged with Sammy, merge again with SNK, since SNK is making games on Sammy's Atomiswae hardware. Then the 3 of them make a new console: Dreamcast 2!
Processor: PC architecture for ease of programming.
Video: Ati 3800 series card. Runs about same as Nvidia 8800, less power consumption, runs cooler.
Disc type: HD DVD or Blu Ray, w/e is cheaper at the time.
HDD: Comes with a 40 GB standard laptop drive. Expandable to w/e size you want to put in. As well as USB HDD support and USB flash drives.
Internet support: WiFi, free online multiplayer, and Sega Channel to DL new content, classic games, forget multimedia shit, lets focus on games!
Then with those 3 companies, start cranking out the goodness.

Dreamcast is still our all time favorite system, if only they'd have put a dvd player in it, might still be available. Games need to work across all platforms. The way it is now is like computers before Windows... Had to figure out which computer would run the program you wanted to use and then be stuck buying all that company's hardware, cables, etc to get the proggy to work. Of course no one wants to share proprietary info because they don't want to lose market share. We still use our Dreamcast, love it to this day.

Only if Segata Sanshiro returns would Sega make the Dreamcast 2 happen.

I have to agree with the people who are saying Sega's over the hill. I can name only two Sega game franchises off the top of my head, Sonic and Virtua Fighter. Sega's business strategy in the console market made the PS3's campaign (to date at least) look perfect in comparison. They did themselves in by announcing a new system being in development only about a year into the life of their latest platform and they never could catch a break when it came to independent devs.

Is the Dreamcast 2 just 2 original dreamcasts duct taped together ?

Why are there so many people that love the dreamcast? I remember it as a hand-cramp-inducing pile of garbage. The one analog stick pretty much screwed itself out of future ports right off the start. Sony's Playstation already had the dualshock available, making the choice of 1 analog a colossal oversight. Not to mention the lack of support in general. I loved the Genesis and the SegaCD, but I have no love for any of their other abominations whatsoever.

Admittedly, the controllers could have been a bit more ergonomic, but the system itself was quite advanced for the time. I think that's the reason so many, including myself, put it on such a high pedestal. There are die-hard Dreamcast game fans, and while I really enjoy many of them, I'm more of a fan of the hardware itself, and its importance in the history of the video games industry.
The DC was the first major system to include a modem, in North America anyhow, which was used to implement online play and downloadable content. This also made it the first system to enable web-browsing. Because of the way some of its games were customized and allowed interaction between them and things like the memory cards mini-games, it was a sort of pre-cursor to modern-day user generated content; you could theoretically have a different gaming experience than anyone else. The system also had an internal, monitored, liquid cooling system, a brake on the CD spinning motor, and saw the dawn of well-implemented, motion sensing controls, with Bass Fishing.
Some of the loftier ideas, like user generated, and downloadable content, really came off as half-assed, but it's generally felt that these would have really been fleshed out if the system had more time to prove itself. A lot of people feel that the system would have been more successful if Sega of Japan gave Bernie Stolar more freedom at Sega of America, even though he pretty much suffocated the Saturn, but that's neither here nor there.
Either way, I hope that helps explain why so many of us have a fondness for the little system that couldn't.

Funny how history repeats itself, huh?
Sony works with Nintendo for a new CD addon, then splits and makes their own system, breaking into the console market. Then Microsoft works with Sega for their new system's OS, and goes on to make their own system, also breaking into the console market, hahaha.

This could go right next to my Game Gear (Master System 2), Megadrive II, and White Saturn (Saturn v2).
I do love my Dreamcast as it is, but I would like to have something around in case it breaks.
That said, I would love to see Dreamcast games on Xbox Live Arcade, Virtual Console (if they could get them to work, as they will for Neo Geo CD), or Gametap (if it ever shows up where I live without tricking the system).
Or just sequels to all the great Dreamcast games.

Companies have to re-file and defend their trademarks before they expire, or else the trademark is eventually lost. This really doesn't mean anything.
