With the long-overdue in-game XMB still a no-show as of last month's 2.00 PS3 firmware update, we were about to resign ourselves to a future that entailed exiting out of games to read messages and getting up to change the channels. Yeah, barbaric. But perhaps we're being a little too fatalistic. Included in yesterday's PSN Thursday update were some special treats: notably a custom soundtrack option in High Velocity Bowling that looks very XMB-ish, along with an in-game friends list for the Timeshift demo, available from the multiplayer screen, which also has that XMB look 'n feel.
So if we've got some of the most requested features being added straight to games, emulating the look and feel of the XMB interface, what do we need an in-game XMB for then? Maybe nothing, but we worry that if developers become responsible for implementing this functionality instead of it being a system constant, that we'll see an inconsistent experience across whichever games decide to add it. While we're not quite bowled over, it's a step in the right direction.

They really need to make this a system/dashboard function. I see this as a step in the wrong direction...I see custom soundtracks as being more "next gen" than better graphics and 5.1 surround sound. Please wake up and listen to the tons of people screaming for a substantial XMB update on the Sony Blog.

Custom Soundtracks for multiplayer games is fine. For the main single player experience I would call you crazy to want to play a custom soundtrack over it. It would be like playing a custom soundtrack over the Star Wars movie or Indiana Jones. Every piece of the game forms the whole and why would you want to do something like that?
As far as a custom soundtrack being next gen I worked on a game in 1991 that would play cutom sound tracks. Its hardly a 'next gen' feature.

Custom soundtracks make the audio cues in games much harder to hear, if they don't eliminate them completely. Take Oblivion for example. One of its audio cues is battle music, take that away and the enemy always gets the first hit if they aren't right in front of your nose. Then, when you have beaten the monster, you can never be quite sure whether or not it was the only one around since you won't know when the battle music stops.
Then there are games that the soundtrack is an absolute must have due to the emotions it evokes. Take Final Fantasy 7, imagine replacing Aeris's theme with, well anything else. It wouldn't have the same impact as the original song. IMO custom soundtracks should only really be used in sports games, those without stories, and the like. Custom soundtracks are "next gen"? The Xbox 1 had custom soundtracks. Does that mean the Xbox 1 is more "next gen" than the PS3?
I'm not sure that custom soundtracks are all that special, but maybe I've just taken them for granted over the past 6 years.

I'm a recent PS3 buyer and I like being able to see my friends online, but I would desperately love to be able to in-game message them or smack talk them when I see them...
I don't have a 360, so I have no real comparison points other than what I've read. But it does seem like a pretty necessary addition that should be implemented sooner rather than later :)

yea me and you are in the same boat. ive had my PS3 since august and it does suck having to exit the game to message them. some games though (i know Resistance does it) lets you do the messaging thingy from the multiplayer lobby which is better tna quitting the game completely but having it there with the press of the PS button would be ideal.

And the handhelds couldn't agree whether or not color was a requirement for on-the-go gaming. We were grateful for the two company battle for domination between Nintendo and Sega! By god, we...we...

As they said, the PS3 uses the same buddy list you have in the XMB for everything (at least in all the games I've used it for) but the interface for it is defined by the game and not the console.
Warhawk lets you view their Warhawk-specific profile and jump into games with them, showing you where and what they are playing. Resistance is the same. When I was playing Rainbow 6 Vegas and GRAW2, I was the first to get them and didn't really look into the multi-player much.
That said, I would like a higher integration of it. Having to exit to add friends is a little annoying, but checking messages is kind of a moot point for me what with no pausing for online games. You're just a target while you're screwing around with messaging.

you get what you pay for. While I don't always like shelling out for online play, I do think the extra funds put into it gives Sony/developers to put more effort into it. Especially if the developers are doing all this themselves.

I, for one, couldn't care less if they ever have in-game soundtracks. I don't want to ruin a game like Uncharted by replacing it's beautiful score with Fall Out Boy.
Also, Resistance has had in game friends list since like, forever.

Nope, Chris. Resistance didn't have that. But Rock Band did... under Community. Hell, you can even start a voice chat in Rock Band.
Sony knows eveyone wants it and they are trying their damndest to do it. But if the solution can be added to future games via Playstation Tools dev kit, that's something. Not the all encompassing solution but that's still baking.

The original XBox did it that way, and it was pretty obvious that most devs. didn't have the manpower, insight, or empathy to do it (and do it well).
I've been seriously spoiled by the 360, though, so I don't care if Sony "rips-off" MS or not - at the very least, they should take some notes...

In-game XMB is supported in the FW. It has been for a few revisions (unsure how long). However, it isn't native underlying in the actual XMB. Games that wish to allow In-game XMB have to write the code to hook into the XMB. This requires more work from the developers and uses some additional RAM (unsure of how much). So these images are not reproduced XMB, they *are* XMB, but again it's the developer's choice to include it or not.

The Driving Force Pro has 900 degree support on the PS2/3, but find me another game besides Gran Turismo that used it.. It just sucks.

I'm thinking Sony must have some real big plans for early 2008...I have a feeling that Sony is preparing to release a bunch of cool features for the PS3 once they finish shaking off the $600 price tag issue and the whole not enough game thing. So early 2008 they might shift into gear about the PSN/Home.

I'm more referring to the great implementation and ease of use in the 360 version. I can plug my iPod directly into the 360, I can stream from a computer wirelessly, etc. There has never been a console (or PC game) that has done this well at providing the experience I want. Not all games are cinematic experiences which require sound or music cues to appreciate.

It might be better for Sony to just give developers the tools and instructions on how to integrate those things into their games. RFOM did, CoD4 kinda does, these games are doing it, etc. etc.
Only problem is that older games won't have the features because they weren't given the tools/instructions during development. So they would need to make a patch.
If you think about it though, it's kind of good because instead of having to dip into the reserved memory pool that the PS3 OS uses it would just draw out of the memory pool the game is running from.

No, it wouldn't. Because most devs wouldn't put the time or resources into doing it let alone doing it well. The Xbox Guide and OS are fully integrated and work on EVERY game, even low budget ones. Also because the Guide functions from the OS rather than from 3rd party software the GUI and features don't fluctuate from title to title, which makes it much more user friendly.
Furthermore, the PS3 has 256MB of system RAM, it doesn't matter how you cut it. Whether you dip into the 96MB reserved for the OS or the portion being used by a game doesn't matter- the game pauses either way and therefore there aren't any performance hits while you're text messaging or whatever.

Why cant they just write a program that will add xmb and sound tracks to the game and pass it out to developers, that way it's unformed. I envision it as sony saying, hears the tools you need add your own back ground, done.

WOW..... PS3 online SUCKS, I wasted my time on it. After wasting so many hours on COD to connect on Sony' cr*p online system. I finally decided to buy a 360 (never thought that would happen).
It amazing how much better 360 is. Though I'm still a loyal PSP lover, my PS3 is just a piece of junk(thank god I never sold my PS2). I hear about this Red Ring thing about 360, but maybe the PS3 don't have issues like that is b/c it doesnt even play games. It's library sucks, and when there is a great game. You can't even play it b/c the PS3 has such a crappy online service or the devs left too many bugs for the PS3 version.
PS3 fanboys who don't own a PS3 for real/ yet. Seriously DON'T buy it. It's a waste of cash! SE is thinking about it, Valve and Capcom figured it out. I think it's time to listen and get the f*ck out of that wagon. I found out the hard way, I just don't want anyone else to suffer like me.
If it wasn't for the Bluray Movie player and the Remote Play capabilities, my PS3 would of seriously been in the garbage.
