BioShock has absolutely terrible gameplay, in retrospect. And by terrible, I mean there is none. I think, at least, it demonstrates that a game can be carried by the story-- not that we didn't already know that-- so hopefully it'll inspire some more effort in that department.

Crysis deserves best PC game and best military game as well as best graphics-- and Crytek easily deserves best studio. I really wish it were multi-platform so that everyone could appreciate it for the amazing work of art that it is, rather than try and pan it because they can't play it on their Xbox.

Truly open-ended, great weapons customization, the suit powers really are fun as hell, the story is flawless in an action-movie kind of way, best graphics to date, addictive, complex, and rewarding multiplayer... I could go on and on. I honestly consider it the best game ever made.

Have to disagree, Jeff... BiosShock is awesome. Yes, the story helps the game a lot, but everything from the setting to the music also contributes. And the plasmids made for a very nice change of pace from your typical assortment of FPS weaponry.

toLkKi,

I disagree with you too. The UT series is fucking fantastic. It's not for everyone, but if you're looking for ultra fast paced over-the-top multiplayer action then no game does it better.

The UT series is a great series but its past its prime honestly...It uses old gameplay methods in the new world of Team Fortress, COD 4 and the grand daddy of Multiplayer right now which is Halo... So Epic really needs to take some consideration into making its game more playable for everyone...And that UT is not

I agree. For me it was just another FPS letdown. Whereas COD4 surpassed expectations.

I didn't like Bioshock. Extremely predictable storyline (I guessed the run of the full game after just playing the demo). the music is unmemorable, the level design lacked despite being in such a fantastic location.

Nope.

I knew I'd get whited out. Liking Crysis and saying something bad about BioShock in the same post-- sin. But c'mon, guys; the gunplay in BioShock was a joke. The same 4 splicers the whole game, randomly getting more difficult as you go, extremely linear.

I agree with you about Crysis, I've played the first level like 7 times now just for the hell of it. Every time it feels different, I take other routes etc., amazing game. The only thing I don't like about it is the frame rate drops, even though I have a pretty nice computer and am only playing at High settings. Can't play multiplayer because I'm a dirty pirate :( but I've heard it's fun.

Wow, from the Bioshock demo you guessed the entire story of the game? You guessed who Atlas was, the entire Andrew Ryan vs. Fontaine plot, and what your true identity was - all from just playing through the demo?? Remarkable!

Wow. It's amazing how things really turn themselves into a brat fest when we get to discussing great games. I want to go the Oscar forums after the awards night, and look at all the comments that fly off about the movies that should have won.

Seriously, if you think that you could tell the entire story from playing a demo of any game, then perhaps you should share your phenomenal gift with the rest of the world. Do that, instead of share your obvious tenuous grasp of the English language to spout off on blogs, and forums the world over. I know my limitations, hence why I'm here.

Crysis is an okay game, but there is definitely something lacking in it. Perhaps the story. Actually, I believe that's what it is, the lack thereof, or at least poor handling of. There's something to be said for too much open-endedness, and Crysis is exactly that. Too open-ended. Sure you can go through the game, and never take the same way twice, but you still end up at the same place. You're still boxed in to a hemmed up, rather placid story, that was okay as "action movies" go. And the suit is a great inclusion, but the game came off to me, and others I'm sure of more of a tech demo, and of Crysis 2's potential to become.

I don't have a real true favourite game this year, as it's just too difficult to really narrow it down, but for once, I'm just glad that the GOTY nod on that joke of a show didn't fall to something obvious. It actually looks like people with a normal sense of indoctrination placed their votes this year. As well, people made great nominations.

Halo 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Orange Box, Crysis, Bioshock, COD4, Ratchett and Clank, etc... it didn't matter what the Game of the Year was, because it was Year of the Game.

Bioshock is weak in all respects but Cryisis is...well.....imperfect as well the Mods and suit powers are cute but lack depth to make it a killer game,if anything best FPS in the last 2-3 years the sand boxyness makes it fun to mess about but it also shows how sloppy some of the game is..the AI can get stuck on cliffs and other odds and ends which just starts to annoy you 4 hours in.....

If Bioshock is stuck in the urinal..er....kiddy pool Cryisis is in the shallow end of the of the diving pool, but like Dark messiah whos behind Cryisis clinging to the steps of the diving pool they can't leave the shallow end because of the lack of polish, this can be said for HL2+eps as well.

Halo has not left the kiddy pool since 2....3 is stuck in the same yellow stained cesspool bioshock resides in.

Not had a chance to dig my teeth into UT3 yet but if the demo is any indication its a bastard child of 99,04 and UC which is not bad,99 rocked :P

--------------------
All
Bioshock's only claim to fame is high production values in art/sound...its like Kane and Lynch in some respects however its only broken and unfinished not a hose job and insult to gamers.

Agreed, at least on bioshock being broken the game play is a mainstreaming nightmare and thoroughly broken because it was lunched before it was finished.
However Cryisis is not without error but in comparison Cryisis is better and the orange box is nothing to sneeze at either both of which are much more solid FPSs.

Apologies to all the trolls, flamers and fanboys bioshock is a mediocre mess destroyed to make the pub some quick cash.

Agree with most of that.
As a previous diehard Halo fan who was crapping his pants in anticipation for Halo 3 I must say that I was thoroughly disappointed with the third installment. The single player was fairly dull and the multiplayer got very boring very quickly. I agree that CoD 4 is a better shooter overall with one of the best single player campaigns to date not to mention how stunning it looks.

To be honest I would have given CoD 4 the award for best MP as it seems to hook me a lot more than Halo 3 did...

Maybe I'm weird, but I wouldn't call winning 3 of ~20 categories "drowning the competition" :)

Orange box took home two awards, including a "best game" category (on PC), so that's sweet - it deserves it. Portal was amaznig and I can't stop playing TF2. I think it's the best 360 game too, but that's me.

I'm really really really REALLY happy that Halo 3 only won one award (the "dew" one doesn't count). You think Bioshock is overrated? I'd like to introduce you to Halo 3.

I suppose they could have said, "Bioshock holds the competitions heads in a full sink for a minute and then lets them out and gives them CPR."

I would have given it to Galaxy over Bioshock, but it's still a good choice. Both are exceptional... but I think ten years from now, people will still play Galaxy the same way I still play SMB3. It's instantly timeless.

Can't say the same for Bioshock... perhaps we'll be playing its sequels, but the original will fade away.

hey a bioshock thread

I've got a request for PC players, for a screenshot near the end of the game (slight spoiler):

In the last level, in the little sister nursery area, there were a few crayon drawings of big daddies. Can anyone take a screenshot of those for me? I have the 360 version, but those crayon drawings were awesome and I wanna make it my desktop. If you can, please get a big resolution :) fapomatic.com is a good imagehost too, fyi

I agree the Bioshock bashing is absurd. It was a great game.

But I do think that games which thrive on realism are at an inherent disadvantage, because they can only be as realistic as current technology allows, and are guaranteed to be outdated later. Cartoony games can still look fairly attractive years later because they aren't being held up against reality for comparison. But, as impressive as they seem now, games like Mass Effect and Bioshock are going to look downright primitive in ten years.

Both are five-star games in 2007. But Galaxy is timeless, and Bioshock isn't.

More curious is the idea that it was won by a game that had very close advertising relations to the award bearer. Granted, Halo is immensely addictive, but you got to give it a little bit of a double-take for the "Fueled by Dew" award.

Agreed. I loved the ambiance that the Bioshock score added, but it wasn't nearly as epic (or dynamic) as the Halo score. After playing Halo 1 time with a custom soundtrack, I noticed just how much the score adds to the overall weight of the battle scenes.

I've argued all along that Bioshock was an incredibly easy game. But what set this one aside from many other games was it complete sense of immersion and unique environmental features. I found myself quickly blasting through people so I could spend more time staring out the windows and appreciating the quality of art that went into making this game.

People keep saying the over abundance of vita chambers makes the game less challenging. I don't think I once used a Vita chamber. Games like Half-Life and F.E.A.R. have taught me to use quick Save/Load excessively, so it's a moot point.

The only thing I didn't enjoy about the game was the camera. I was actually pretty aggressive about researching everything, which was quite a monotonous task and made the enemies less challenging. Granted I could have simply ignored that component of the game, but it afforded such an advantage that I couldn't help myself.

With the latest patch offering new DLC I considered playing through the game again. I'll still recommend it to anybody interested in the genre. Still think Half-Life 2 kicks the crap out of BioShock anyday...

Portal's technology is old?

Halo 3's save replay feature is old as dirt. If I remember correctly that feature was in Starcraft.

Rock Band is a just a new take on the same idea that DDR and that ilk of games started.

Finally, let's look at Crysis's technology. Aside from graphics, the only truly new feature it has is the weapon attachments. The suit's abilities were all seen before in various other games (the speed and armor were used in Unreal Tournament, the cloaking was used in MGS3 through a combo of active camo and the spirit camo suit, strength you could cite Crackdown or the Hulk game).

Up to this point in time, the only thing even remotely like Portal's portal gun was seen in Prey, and those were all static and didn't have even a third of the physics that Portal does. Just because Portal's graphics didn't require you to buy a new computer doesn't mean the technology isn't new. Besides, "It was a triumph."

For all those saying halo 3 sp is overrated and boring, have you played COD4?
I played two levels, and while the gameplay was alright, i got tired of the same objectives every 5 minutes.. .
-pick up the papers
-rendezvous
-plant this bomb
-rendezvous
-ride in tank
-rendezvous

And while I was dissapointed by the end of the halo 3 campaign, the first 7 or 8 levels were pretty epic, and the gameplay is much better all around (that indistinguishable halo fun factor that I have yet to see another game have)

Good year for Shooters!!!
