Today's most tribal video: Patapon
Rhythm games seem to be in abundance these days, but Patapon's a little different than most. For starters, it's cute, reminiscent of the super-huggable LocoRoco. It's also not about being in a rock band, or just tapping buttons to the beat of your MP3s -- It's about war.
As seen in the trailer above, players control a tiny army of one-eyed minions of by pounding on drums, which the little men respond to by performing certain actions. It's part Lemmings, part Space Channel 5, and after spending some time with it at this year's Tokyo Game Show, it's definitely got our attention. To adorable battle!

It looks chaotic, but most rhythm games do until you play them yourself. Mixing cutsie visuals with blood-letting warfare spells win for me though, so I'll probably have to pick it up when it comes out.

*sigh* Fine, I'LL do it...

I have no idea what's going on in that video, but I really want it.
Rob @ Dec 9th 2007 7:27AM
Those are the exact words I was thinking throughout.
Vexorg @ Dec 8th 2007 1:40AM
The visual style and sound seems somewhat reminiscent of Meteos, although the gameplay looks to be absolutely nothing like that game. I'll probably end up with a PSP somewhere along the line, and this might be something I'll pick up when I get one.
Noshino @ Dec 8th 2007 1:42AM
what happened with Chaka and Don, why were they left out of the game's title!
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 8th 2007 4:13AM
Chaka Don Pata Pon
...you're right. That would be cool.
Mainman @ Dec 8th 2007 11:10AM

The design is awesome. FACT.
Here's hoping it's fun. Oh, and that they make a ps3 version, too.
Cam @ Dec 8th 2007 1:51AM
Definitely liking the art style of the game, it reminds me of Knytt Stories in terms of atmosphere and Super Paper Mario's 2D style. If only Nintendo did something similar with Pikmin. Regardless, nice way to blend group strategy with rhythm.

Pata pata pata pon!
If this game gets good reviews, I'll definitely buy a PSP for it. Seems so awesome.
bAssackwards @ Dec 8th 2007 3:23AM
Heh, it looks quirky and fun! My PSP is being overloaded with so many games these days. Can't complain though, bring it on!
jopojelly @ Dec 8th 2007 3:27AM
Dang, that looks awesome!
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 8th 2007 4:15AM
This looks like it will be the first PSP game to sell exceptionally well in Japan that's not anything related to Final Fantasy and Monster Hunter.
Kwipper @ Dec 8th 2007 7:22AM
O.O
I... MUST.. HAVE.. THIS!!
LaughingTarget @ Dec 8th 2007 7:30AM
1. Why does Sony insist on showing PSP games on tiny PSPs? Get rid of the thing and show the game in the whole screen.
2. I hope they don't sit there and chant like that the entire time in the game, it is irritating.
ALH @ Dec 8th 2007 10:58AM
oh jesus im going to have to get a PSP, that video is gorgeous :(. I absolutley LOVE that style of 2d, more games need to be made in it.
Mick @ Dec 8th 2007 11:32AM
So many good games finally coming out for the PSP, after I sell mine. I'll have to go pick up a PSP Lite sooner or later. Especially for this.
ThornedVenom @ Dec 8th 2007 12:43PM
THAT is a PSP game I'd want to play.
2D animated warfare = win. (although the cute warcries tend to get annoying)
RobertHMayfire @ Dec 8th 2007 12:45PM
Pokemon just called. They want their Unowns back please.
Looks like a fun game.

Thanks, now I'm going to lay terrified in my bed, scared to death that I will 'patapatapataboom!' off in the distance, getting closer... and closer... They're COMING FOR ME GODDAMIT! DO SOMETHING!!! HEEELLLLP!!
Ted @ Dec 8th 2007 8:22PM
Of course they'll chant that the entire game, that's the point of the game, you control them by repeating the rythm they make using the PSP buttons. Also, the game itself is called 'Patapon' which is the sound they make... So if they removed that from the game they wouldn't have much left lol
P7PSP @ Feb 1st 2008 12:26AM
O.o
PATA PATA PATA PON. MAKE IT STOOOOPPP!!!!!! LOL
Seriously, I think games like this are what you get a PSP for. Well, I would think any handheld deserves unique and original titles. DS took the lead on more of them (Mario family of games and other Nintendo titles), but as I am way past the age of transition, I have to look like I have a, um, 'multimedia device' ;)
