It's pretty clear that the Wii version of Activision's rockstar simulator is the ugly stepsister of the Guitar Hero III family (aside from the PS2 version, but who plays those things anymore) -- it's got no downloadable content, requires friend codes for online play, is sans Grim Ripper, and to top it all off, it only transmits sound monaurally. However, Activision is not neglecting its rockers of the tiny white box, as it has announced that it will be offering remastered game discs early 2008, and will also enable DLC for the system sometime next year.
The new, stereo-enabled discs will be free of charge through Activision, though they haven't announced exactly when they'd be available, or how they would be shipped out. Also, we're not exactly certain how DLC will work on the system (our Wii's system memory is already bogged down by VC gems like Donkey Kong Jr. Math and Urban Champion), but RedOctane is reportedly working feverishly with Nintendo to figure out a method of getting new songs on the Wii. Apparently, trying to wish them onto the system hasn't been working out very well.

This is great news! Hopefully the new disks will also include quickplay co-op mode, another one of the features missing from the original version of the game that was later patched on the 360 and ps3 versions.

This can mean only one thing.
Nintendo has to give us an external device to store the DLC on.

Your Wii has a hard drive?! OMG!1! Illegal haxorz!! etc.
But seriously, this is a good decision. It's disappointing that they released an inferior version but they were presumably trying to meet deadlines for the Christmas season. The fact that they're essentially apologising for and fixing it is very impressive.

I was at a guitar hero tournament last night, and i have to say the ps2 version is horrible. there is a huge delay with the wireless guitar and the wired is no better. my fingers still hurt from having to mash the fret buttons so hard to register as well as strumming as hard as i could.

I would blame the TV before anything. I thought my guitars were crappy (ps2 target exclusive bundle), but i just had to tweak the calibration lag option for about half an hour but now it plays smoothly on my HD TV, even upscaled.

Except for the only version with force feedback and guitar sound coming from the guitar?

Hmm, how good is the sound coming from the Wiimote in this game? Although it was kind of cool in Wii Sports and Zelda, I didn't think the quality was that great and for music it seems like it would be a lot more apparent if the quality was bad. On the other hand though, that just sounds insanely cool to actually have the guitar making music, even if the quality is sub-par. It's almost like surround sound...

From what I've heard, the sound that comes out the Wii Remote is just the jarring noise made when you miss a note.

Looking at last month's sales charts, a lot of people, as it was the highest selling version (counting both the standalone and bundled packages). :P
Likely, DLC will be stored on the SD card. It allows for more storage (up to 2GB), and it has been shown before that games CAN read from it (Excite Truck, SSBB).
Also, from what I've been reading... GH3 Wii DOES work in stereo. It only gives you mono sound if you're trying to use Dolby Pro Logic II.

Once again, everyone is getting too caught up arguing about the benefits of each version to see this for what this is: the developers did a shit job on some versions, which we should all be getting at them for. Guitar hero II for ps2 was amazing; no reason that III should get fucked.

I have it for Wii.
Don't mind the mono sound, and while the free D:C sounds neat I probably wouldn't of boughten any of the packs so far.
I am very interested in the hint of a hardrive.

The sound needs to be compressed a lot when it's sent to the Wii Remote, so it's not great at playing speech (Big Brain Academy talks through the remote), but for the string-breaking sound that comes from GHIII, it's fine. It's a nice feature for co-op/multiplayer so you can tell when your friend/competitor messes up. If you don't like it, just turn the volume down on your Wiimote's speaker.

Ya know what the PS3 does have though? Fun games. I'd call it an even trade.

It's the same with games on the DS. Mario Kart, StarFox, Pokemon...they allow players to play with random people online.
To play with your friends, however, you need their FC (just like you need another players GamerTag for 360)
I wish people would get over FCs.

I hate how the "3 button chords" are structured.. usually they are Red yellow orange.. when they should be red blue orange (if it was mimicing a real 3 note power chord on the guitar)..
then i just think.. hmm i can do all these songs on my real guitar.. (the ones I would play on the system anyways).. so yeah.. me and my band > guitar hero.

i wonder if Nintendo is secretly working on a hardrive that would somehow blend in with the wii. Like a hardrive that acts like the wii stand, or one that plugs in the top of the wii. That would be cool!

Hunh, okay.

Gee, how could Nintendo fit DLC on the Wii's small memory? If only an SD card could be somehow inserted into the system and serve as an expanded system memory.
Oh if only...
Seriously though, it's been out for a year. Can Nintendo finally release an update that allows the Wii to read and write saves/content directly from the SD card without having to swap saves between the card and system memory? Is this something an update could do?
Brawl a while back revealed that you could save in-game photos to the SD card through the game...so you'd think it's doable.

This is GREAT news-I'm getting GH3 for Christmas for Wii, since I don't own PS3 or 360, and I was definitely bummed when I read reviews saying that DLC wouldn't be available. This changes everything! Hopefully it will be soon!

just me, or does it seem like nethersoft really hates nintendo?... they released the ps2 and 360 versions, but another developer had to step up and make one for the wii... and it also seems like the wii version blows compared to the others (from what i've heard) which really sucks, because i'm nintendo faithful.... why must you fuck us over so, nethersoft?

Actually, the PS2 one was ported by Budcat Creations. PS3/360 were the lead platforms.
