Dragon Quest Swords unsheathed Feb. 26
And be sure to have your brain thank us for the last-minute headline edit which saw the removal "unshwiithed." It's best we use a concise sentence to inform you that Dragon Quest Swords is, in fact, a Wii game due for release in North America on February 26th, 2008. Oh, and there's a subtitle too: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors. Where most games would settle for just a masked queen or a tower of mirrors, Square Enix goes the extra mile and gives you both for the price of one game. Watch out, Orange Box!As for the game itself, the press release dutifully reminds us that it's essentially a foray into first-person fencing, placing "a mighty blade, protective shield and special attacks all in the palm of your hand." We're not sure how much of a chance you stand with such teeny tiny weaponry, but hardened Dragon Quest fans should do alright.

This game has been shit on by reviewers but I'm excited for it.

Where did you see reviews for this game? This was one of the titles I was really looking forward to the most for the Wii but haven't heard any news on it in a long while. With Brawl and now this, my Wii is going to get a lot of play come February.

Famitsu gave it a 33/40 (8,8,8,9), so it doesn't sound THAT bad (82.5%).
Kohler over at GameLife played the Japanese version. Here's his view:

Glaring problem I see with the game: It was by Genius Sonority. The same dev that did Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD (how do you make a Pokémon RPG so dull that it bores most Pokémon fans? Ask Genius Sonority, they know!).
But they did make Pokémon Trozei! for the DS, which I found to be a fun puzzle game.

Eh..Blue dragon got a higher score and we all know how that turn out.
Just saying.

I'm more excited about Chrystal Chronicles for the Wii and Kingdom Hearts for the DS.
And Super Mario RPG for the Virtual Console... c'mon Square =(

I'd like to believe this won't suck...but its quite a challenge ;)

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!
BPM - The Revenge @ Dec 10th 2007 6:08PM
Reviews haven't been too favorable for it... But I'm still willing to give it a rental (your mileage will vary, eh?).
Sales have been pretty low for it, too, in Japan. Which is unusual, since Dragon Quest is HUGE over in Japan (moreso than Final Fantasy, but that's popular over there, too).
Erwos @ Dec 10th 2007 6:10PM
A Dragon Quest game with bad reviews must really, really suck.
Slaziman (B-B-BRUSHED WITH FAAAAME) @ Dec 10th 2007 6:13PM
The dude on the box art is one damn fugly son of a !!@##
BPM - The Revenge @ Dec 10th 2007 6:32PM
I've wondered if this boxart was done by Akira Toriyama (Dragonball creator, Chrono Trigger art, Blue Dragon art, nearly all of Dragon Quest's art) or not...
It bears some resemblence... yet it still seems different.
Which may or may not have something to do with the ugliness.
Trickob @ Dec 10th 2007 7:10PM
mr. Toriyama is indeed the main character designer for the game. For once, I don't see anyone that bears any particular resemblance to any of characters from the dragonball series. still, i wonder if the main character will go super saiyan in the overdrive sequences...
Mr.ESC @ Dec 10th 2007 7:17PM
It looks metrosexual just like the rest of the characters of most Japannese games.
Tacos ಠ_ಠ
Suiname @ Dec 10th 2007 6:35PM
Shit on by reviewers? This game was so popular in japan that they sold it as a standalone unit that connects to your TV so you don't need a console to play and I think even that version sold almost if not over a million units. I am super pumped.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Dec 10th 2007 6:57PM
Popular does not equal good game.
ShortFuse @ Dec 10th 2007 7:06PM
Only TWO reviews by rather unknown reviewers really isn't enough. IGN will probably give it a 7.5 to 8.5 or something since they gave Soul Calibur Legends a 6.0
BPM - The Revenge @ Dec 10th 2007 7:31PM
Uh, the TV game Dragon Quest Swords (that came out LONG before this) is NOT the same thing as this.
Alexander @ Dec 10th 2007 7:49PM
Ludwig, you're the reason I love Joystiq.
Suiname @ Dec 10th 2007 8:24PM
You're right, this isn't the same game as the TV dragon quest swords, but it is the sequel. I was confused
sheppy2.0 @ Dec 10th 2007 8:29PM
It has two things which amuse me.
1. Gothic Lolita's. Seriously, I love that particular anime design.
2. Gothic Lolita Pantsu. Yes, her dress hikes up so far in the back, you get a constant panty shot.
Shit like this amuse me. And if the gameplay is decent (note the word), it will be a good step above most Wii games and thus, I'll support it.
ExcaliburUnited007 @ Dec 11th 2007 10:46AM
This game is seriously gonna suck badly which is sad since it has such a beautiful cover art. If only it had some deep stuff to it.
dizzy @ Dec 11th 2007 11:12AM
I know very little of this game, but when I read "first-person fencing" I felt squeamish. Must not relive the horror that was Red Steel *shudder*
...but hey, it's a jrpg. Maybe we'll get to use a sword that defies physics, being larger than a horse corpse sodomized on a spear yet swings as easily as a yardstick. Yay!
