In watching new trailer for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which debuted during last night's Spike VGAs, Joystiq's own Griffin McElroy made a strange and unintentionally philosophical observation: can mechanical objects cross into the uncanny valley? Can a computer-generated car be so detailed that it edges too close to reality and minor differences become glaring issues? Judge for yourself; the video is embedded above.

canned movies from set camera angles are nice and all, I mean that's what made me look at the first 3 GT games and say WOW, but it's not what you get playing the game. Show me some real gameplay footage if you want me to Wow anymore.
The racing genre, whether it be semi-sim like GT or Forza or real sims on PC, has pretty much peaked.

i have to admit, this is one of the finest videos i have seen this year... but, thats just it, this is a engine scripted video, not actual gameplay, lets just wait till the actual game comes out and see what happens.

Way too shiny. Way too pristine. The Gran Turismo series lost it with GT4. It just didn't have the same feel as GT1-3. I picked up FORZA Motorsports and was enthralled. FORZA 2 is even better than the original. I am a fan of simulators, and in my opinion the physics and damage create a much better race game than GT.
This looks too shiny and I would consider it to be more like PGR than FORZA. Graphics aren't everything. The "feel" and handling are the most important functions of a race simulator.

It's not the not-quite-realistic look that makes the cars feel "uncanny". They suffer from the same thing almost every single CGI object in every movie and most games ever made suffers from...they're so shiny they look like they were run through an astroglide carwash.

Almost no such thing as dust/smudge in Gran Turismo? Because DAMN that's a lot of waxing... it REALLY doesn't make you want to crash.
I dunno about this "uncanny" debate because I kind of like the polished graphics for the cars: it's like nearing a certain perfection real cars could never achieve, and therefore justifies why videogames are badass. But yeah, if it's REALLY a true racing simulator, then it was a bad aesthetic choice.

In GT2 and up your car gets dirtier as you drive it until you get it washed. I expect GT5 will be the same.

I think the graphics would have looked better to me had they not shown the goofy garage intro and just cut straight to the cars. Additionally, I believe that knowing it was game and looking for realism hurt it. I imagine that if I had just seen this on TV with a straight cut to the cars I might've actually been fooled, which would have been pretty cool.

Can we PLEASE remove this phrase from the internet's vocabulary? It's embarassingly over-used, and rarely (if ever) used appropriately.
The "uncanny valley" relates to a sensation you get when you see a person (or something like a person - a mannequin, an in-game model, a zombie) and something about them is "off." The closer to a real human being something looks, the more you notice the things that are not "quite right."
It doesn't make you think "Huh, that doesn't look like a real (x)," it gives you what is commonly referred to in scientific circles as "the jibblies."

Agreed. The cars certainly are a bit too shiny and you can obviously tell they're not real, but that doesn't really cause an uncanny valley type effect. You might look for a second and think "huh, are those real cars? no.. no something's a bit off" but it doesn't -bother- you. Uncanny valley stuff (zombies, really realistic robots etc) generally cause anxiety and the result is feeling rather disturbed because you can't quite figure out what is off, not so much here.

The thing is... no matter what, it's NEVER going to be as realistic as the real thing. Sure sure, you can argue that about most games/sims. But the thing is, people that play Madden don't THINK they are really experiencing football like a pro.
But for some reason people think that because the game looks great, and you have something like a force feedback wheel, suddenly it's 'realistic' and just like really doing it.
It's not. Trust me. I was so int GT series that I bought a 350z and started doing track days a few years ago. Now I own an Evolution 9 for track use (yeah, it's a badass track car for the cash, nothing comes close), and I do track days in that car all the time. The funny thing is now I can't play race games because their just silly to me.
Nothing come close to how it is to fly down the back straight doing 120mph into a nice sweeper... then lose it, spin out going 50+ mph sideways with the sound of screaming tires (or was that me screaming? haha), the wind, the adrenalin... the sound of other cars going by. Nothing.
Anyway, looks great, but if you want to experience the real thing, get out and try a track day and don't confuse the two.

I seriously hope nobody plays GT thinking it's the real thing. Most people know it's just meant to be a sim, and probably don't want to spin out at 120+ in real life screaming their head off ;)
My buddy used to do Auto Cross w/ his S2K - he loved it, and he really used to be into GT, but not as much anymore - he still considered it the best sim to date, even though it comes nothing close to the real thing.

ive never had a track day but people are retarded if they think they can buy this game and get an actual realistic simulation. you can maybe get the look of the real thing but you wont get the feel, and thats why its a video game. i think the game looks great though and i was already gonna buy it because Gran Turismo hasnt disappointed me yet (well unless you count the oft-delayed PSP Gran Turismo Mobile).

I don't know...It does look really nice and overall better than Forza 2 but I wish they didn't pump up the candy look. Forza 2 suffers from the same problem everything is way too saturated. Forza 2 is way too contrasty as well. The cars are too clean and shiny although they look better on the track than in the garage. Maybe next generation or the one after things will get uncanny.

You have a valid point, that the game is oversaturated. But honestly, I think it's the right thing to do.
Given that the game has no real 3D (just 2D projections of 3D images) you often have trouble discerning upcoming turns and which way they go. Super bright colors helps reduce these negative effects, even if they aren't realistic.

GT never really did it for me... perhaps if they truly add a car damage system I'll give it another try.
Oh well, at least we're getting another system seller.

I thought the exact same thing when watching the Ace Combat trailers. The planes in the air looked pretty much perfect... but then it all came to a grinding halt with the cutscenes involving "people".
the fact that the planes and environments looked so good actually meant that the humans looked MUCH WORSE by comparison. So yes, inanimate objects can cross the valley, but they make it deeper for those going with them.
Maybe its time to look at bringing back FMV and real actors. Cos I can't help but think they'd have fitted in better than plasticky models.
(PS/ then i got to play a bit of ace combat in-store and the ingame graphics sucked in comparison to the trailers and didn't look uncanny at all. I expect the same from this)

I've never been a fan of the GT series--sims are, well, too simmy for me. I prefer insane racing like Ri(iiii)dge Racer or Burnout. I won't be buying GT5.
That said, this video is super hot and looks--I haven't played it--way better than Forza or PGR, hands down. To say otherwise is just blatant fanboyism.

Well hey if it's anything like the old GT's you can just race your car a few times and that shine will come right off. Just don't wash it!

Looks like everybody else already summed it up: It may be the glossiest racer yet, but it has nothing to do with any valley, canny or otherwise. If the term even pops into your head, it's because you're staring at something unsettling. These are cars. If it were photorealistic, at night, on a misty back alley, and a driverless clunker of a sedan started rolling lifelessly across an alley in front of you, then you might get to combine the phrase with cars.

I hated Forza, was horrid, crash images looked tacky, and the levels were noob, PGR looks faaaaaarrrr better, and dirt has the best crashing physiques I have ever seen. Apart from customization and multiplay, I really have no idea why Forza scored so high. It was a load of complete dog crap :S
GT4 was dissopointing too -_- I pray that GT5 is more fun, I was driving some of the best cars in the game in GT4 within a few days, gay, no. Win a tchampionship, get cash and win car, sell car and get more cash, repeat this process untill you become rich, then just use the new cars you have purchased to win all other races in the game, finished, done, game over, start whole thing again :P
Sega GT had one of the best buying and simulation experiences I have had thus far, hopefully GT5 will do it for me, the last great GT game I played was 3 and 2.
But then to compare PGR with GT is just stupid -_- Whether or not its good or not, PGR has potential, but it still has a helluva way to go to stand next to the dominator in simulation racing that is GT. Many a competitor has tried, many have failed, good luck to PGR.

It just looks like yet another "Real Car Collecting Simulator"
The cars will be pretty but no sim physics, damage or AI with half a brain.
