It's time for Time magazine and every other publication to start dropping their "top whatever" lists of the year. Taking the high honor this year from Time in video games for being "a pebble that has been rounded over the centuries by the gentle splashing of the ocean waves" is Halo 3. The magazine notes that Bungie has refined the series to the point of "pure, unadulterated gaming bliss," though we're a little lost when it calls Halo "graphically gorgeous." Still, it's Time -- we're not expecting too much accuracy from the mainstream press when it comes to video games lately.
The next two spots on the Time list are held by The Orange Box and Rock Band, with both games getting their spots for presenting a bunch of things in one package. Rounding out the top five are Super Mario Galaxy and BioShock. With any luck, BioShock won't be missing from many mainstream lists just because it came out more than a month ago. Heck, we're hoping it doesn't get forgotten on a lot of industry lists.

Metroid Prime 3 should of at least been part of game of the year since it has a great story and excellent gameplay

But it didn't sell and that matters to major publications...I know sells don't equal good but how much a game is embraced means something...Metroid Prime 3 was an excellent game though and it should be considered but it probably won't because of poor sales

This just in: Wounded Gamers Pride causes Gamers to lash out against the opinions of a mainstream magazine, employs extreme hyperbole when describing choices it doesn't like.
Seriously: Halo 3 looks just like Halo 1. Were you able to type that with a straight-face? Did you also compare Super Mario Galaxy to Super Mario 64? If you want your world rocked, download Halo:CE from Xbox Originals and compare it to Halo 3.
Here, compare this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Halo.jpg

Like it or not, Halo 3 set a new record for single-day sales. It hosts between 1.5-3 MILLION games DAILY on XBL. Time is recognizing that.
The only serious omission I see is Metroid Prime 3, which is a GOTY candidate, IMHO.

Well COD 4 did win best Shooter and it deserved that... But Halo 3 does have the blueprint for best MP in the business...There or more options and newer features that will redefine console shooters...Forge is a big step in the right direction of getting level editors on console shooters. And the slew of MP options make games like UT look bad when you compare the two...Like Mark Rein from Epic said Bungie really nailed it...Anybody calling Halo overrated hey thats personal opinion but don't disrespect a series that has and will change the shooter genre for the better.
P.S. Look at COD 4's MP set up it's an exact copy of Halo 2. Then the smart guys at infinity ward took the blueprint and created an ingenious leveling system so Bungie's influence is easily visible in the industry.

Translation: it took them that long to get the formula right. This game is what Halo 2 should've been. And yet, it manages to do nothing new or amazing.

Nothing new? You're not familiar with Halo 3, then? Never mind the fact that Halo 2 MADE the Xbox-Live service something worth having (and set a new standard for console multiplayer matches over the 'net)....Halo 3 has more features for multi-player than some franchises, let alone some games.
Forge alone is revolutionary, especially as new maps arrive to use it. The online features, such as taking screenshots and films and uploading them to bungie's site, custom level design and swapping and a host of other online features (such as stat tracking that exceeds anything else out there)....these are all things that no other game on the 360 is offering. Apparently you have some new definition of the word new that I'm unfamiliar with.

Look. Halo 3 is just a fucking shooter. It's nothing special. It's like sports - some people dedicate their life to it, but nobody is going to argue that it's not the same thing they've seen thousands of times before, because that would be ridiculous. Just get over it.

HAHAHAHAHahahahahHAHahhaahahaha!
Oh wow.
Yeah, revolutionary. I'll go back to my Garry's Mod now. Have fun with map scripting.
As far as consoles go, not even. One of the Timesplitters games allowed you to build your own maps, if I remember correctly. Build them from scrath, I might add.
Revolutionary. Right.

I'm sorry that your 360 ownership has lowered your standards as to what to expect from a game or online service, but the rest of the gaming world has been enjoying all those features with FPSs for years-- some even on consoles. Halo 3's features are just another example of what to expect from a Microsoft product: too little, too late.
@Geist
Exactly. Actually, all three Timesplitters games have had MapMaker. Hell, TS3's is probably the best in-game editor I've EVER seen, and I've seen a lot. It's the perfect blend of functionality and user-friendliness.

I honestly can't understand the hate Halo 3 gets. I hear so much about the storyline and characters being boring and generic, but I just don't agree with that. Maybe it's because I read the books and the story was more fleshed out for me, I'm not sure, but I personally find the story in the Halo universe to be great.
And about the game being a little bit more newbie-friendly? Yeah, it is, but that automatically destroys it to the hardcore gamer? I don't think so. Hell, I really haven't stopped playing it aside from The Orange Box and Guitar Hero III. Yeah, the melees are screwed, but after playing as much as I have I'd say it's much more balanced than Halo 2 ever was.
For me, at least, Halo 3 is my Game of the Year, followed very closely by BioShock and The Orange Box. Sure, I do love Halo, but when I read comments on here it's as if people think I don't play any other games, or just don't give a crap about the others. That's far from the truth, but then again no one is "correct" one way or the other anyway, it's all up to opinion.

Cripes, Halo 3 is Time's GOTY?
I mean ... it plays well enough, but the story is an abyss of "are you kidding me?" followed by "Cortana, would you quit piping in with your canned omnipresence?", and on and on.
The multiplayer, sure, is lots of fun. But GOTY? Hardly.

You seem to confuse 'had the ability' with 'made it easy and effortless'. I remember playing games of Doom over the modem, thank you kindly. Being first doesn't equate with being GOOD. I know it's always fashionable to hate Microsoft, but the fact remains that Xbox-Live provides a common, fool-proof interface for an entire platform of games. The only thing that's even come close for the average gamer is Steam, which is much better than it used to be...but is still not nearly as seamless as XBL.
Yes, Timesplitters 2 had a map-maker. It was extremely limited. Could you share those maps over the 'net? No? Timesplitters 3 had a map-maker. Could you change parameters of the game environment? ON THE FLY, IN-GAME? Was it stream-lined and easy-enough that a 7 year-old could use it without any instruction? Because Forge IS. My son figured it out with only an explanation of what the buttons did...and in minutes he was rearranging Valhalla. Did Timesplitters Future Perfect release maps with new objects and items to use in those maps? Again, NO. The Timesplitters Map editor was an achievement for a console game at the time: but it wasn't always easy to use and was pretty limited because of memory restrictions. In short, Forge goes beyond simple level-editing options.
You might point out that there are a host of PC games that offer many of these features and more. And you'd be right. But that wasn't what we were discussing here. And many players don't want to fight the 'constantly upgrading' cycle on the PC to then have to perform three different upgrades and manual mods to simply enjoy a game. They just want to PLAY. And that's what makes Halo 3 and Xbox-Live work so well.
