The official site for the 2008 Game Developers Conference has revealed that Steven Spielberg's first collaboration with EA Los Angeles with be the focus of a GDC session, revealing the creative process that turned a simple puzzle concept into a full-on Nintendo Wii title. The announcement also reveals the official name of Spielberg's Wii game: BOOM BLOX (that's right, with the caps-lock and everything).
The game will be discussed during "Creating Spielberg's BOOM BLOX", a session led by EALA's VP of Creative Development, Louis Castle. Sadly, it doesn't seem like Spielberg himself will be on-hand to discuss the physics-based puzzle game.
Check out some early footage of BOOM BLOX from E3 2007 after the break.
wow another wii game where you use the revolutionary controller... AS A MOUSE. use some god damn motion sensing in your games. i hate when dev's call point-and-click "one-of-a-kind" gameplay or something like that.
I totally agree, this is why I couldn't get too excited about 'Trauma Center' on the Wii... It was simply mousing around with the Wii controller. It could almost have been web-based. Elebits, golf and bowling are the best examples of the Wii's uniqueness and devs should strive harder to attain that level of control.
As for BOOM BLOCKZ, I'm sure this could be a fun game, many people will likely enjoy it, but I have little interest in it.
But really, Spielberg + Video Games = Unknown territory.
He's had GREAT SUCCESS! (see what I did there) in the film industry, and while not a personal favorite, really has made some good movies. The game looks intriguing and I will probably give it a try.
Gameplay looks fun enough. Do something with the graphics, though. Those explosions are horrendous. This isn't an example of "you don't need fancy graphics if the gameplay is awesome" this is an example of "we're fucking lazy and don't want to spend more than 15 minutes on textures."
Point and click is kinda lame though. You know they say that the ability to throw things is what distinguishes humans from everything else. Anyone can point and click.
Am I the only person in the business who wishes that movie makers would stick to making movies? I make games and don't pretend I know anything about making film. Why do the film guys all assume they can make games?
This game does look like a lot of fun, but I'm not paying 50$ for a block simulator. Also, did this game really require Steven Speilberg to create? I'm mean, this is something that a child could quite literally think up in 5 seconds, and they waste a great film makers talents on this? Oh well, hopefully the "game that makes you cry" will be more interesting.
I wish movie people would stay the fuck in the movie world. Spielburg has absolutely zero background in videogames, and therefore has no business whatsoever being anywhere near this industry.
Those green "chemical explosions" look HORRENDOUS. I don't care how busy the system is with physics; Elebits had what look like the same sort of physics engine and it had a million things going on at once, yet still looked better than that.
That being said, if they flesh this out into a fun and less lazy-looking experience at a lot less than 50 dollars, it is promising.
A blatant but poorly executed rip off of little big planet, if this is all he could produce after two years then he might aswell quit now, i wonder what games he ripped off for his two other exclusives. Well it makes sense now why he teamed up with EA ...
