Spielberg's BOOM BLOX to be featured at GDC 2008
The official site for the 2008 Game Developers Conference has revealed that Steven Spielberg's first collaboration with EA Los Angeles with be the focus of a GDC session, revealing the creative process that turned a simple puzzle concept into a full-on Nintendo Wii title. The announcement also reveals the official name of Spielberg's Wii game: BOOM BLOX (that's right, with the caps-lock and everything).
The game will be discussed during "Creating Spielberg's BOOM BLOX", a session led by EALA's VP of Creative Development, Louis Castle. Sadly, it doesn't seem like Spielberg himself will be on-hand to discuss the physics-based puzzle game.
Check out some early footage of BOOM BLOX from E3 2007 after the break.
"BOOM BLOX", huh? Really? Yikes.

BOOM BLOX ? Thats creative......
Marty @ Dec 12th 2007 3:30PM
A blocky type face (all caps) for a game about blocks? Brilliant!
arrrgh @ Dec 12th 2007 3:36PM
physics looks a little off, but level editor might make the future of this game/thing decent fun
Akamaru @ Dec 12th 2007 3:45PM
This just screams "poor man's LittleBigPlanet" to me.
sicsided @ Dec 12th 2007 3:50PM
@Akamaru
I totally agree.
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Dec 12th 2007 4:41PM
Hopefully it has progressed some since E3 2007.
gonk @ Dec 12th 2007 7:56PM
that's the same thing that popped in my head too
Mark @ Dec 12th 2007 3:38PM
There better be cake when you beat the game
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 12th 2007 4:43PM
how many times must I say it?
THE CAKE IS A LIE.
Mr Khan @ Dec 12th 2007 3:38PM
Yeah, its casual, but it doesn't abuse what it does, it'll have user created content, and isn't a minigame fest
Sorry i've been away for the past couple of days, stupid Westell modem crapped out on me finally, and we just got it replaced
Korova @ Dec 12th 2007 4:23PM
Its ok, dude. We missed you, though. But ... now that you are back, the wounds ... they will heal. THANK GOD!
Mr Khan @ Dec 12th 2007 4:52PM
Totally, this place OBVIOUSLY went to pieces without me :P
ryan @ Dec 12th 2007 3:40PM
i think the best part of this video is the presenter making funny noises and moo-ing near the end.
WiNG @ Dec 12th 2007 3:43PM
So this is a dumbed down Garry's Mod, with puzzle elements? Or...?
ThornedVenom @ Dec 12th 2007 3:55PM
Looks nice: they better allow us to share our user-created levels online.
TehSilentOne @ Dec 12th 2007 3:55PM
a physics-based puzzle game? :P
is he entering it into the IGF? ^____^
samfish @ Dec 12th 2007 3:57PM
That looks pretty fun if you're with your family or girlfriend/wife or something, I think.
GRANTED @ Dec 12th 2007 3:59PM
wow another wii game where you use the revolutionary controller... AS A MOUSE. use some god damn motion sensing in your games. i hate when dev's call point-and-click "one-of-a-kind" gameplay or something like that.
ill trooper @ Dec 12th 2007 4:53PM
I totally agree, this is why I couldn't get too excited about 'Trauma Center' on the Wii... It was simply mousing around with the Wii controller. It could almost have been web-based. Elebits, golf and bowling are the best examples of the Wii's uniqueness and devs should strive harder to attain that level of control.
As for BOOM BLOCKZ, I'm sure this could be a fun game, many people will likely enjoy it, but I have little interest in it.
DBuck_Eye @ Dec 12th 2007 4:01PM
With a budget price, I might check this game out. But otherwise...
StrangeBum @ Dec 12th 2007 4:04PM
Well, you know,
CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL
BUT YOU STILL HAVE TO STEER.
James @ Dec 12th 2007 5:42PM
Just like watching a BLU-RAY (ok it's not caps but still broken spelling) using my PLAYSTATION 3 with a SIXAXIS or DUALSHOCK 3 controller.
STOP SHOUTING NO I DON'T TO.
StrangeBum @ Dec 12th 2007 8:57PM
Aww..thanks for the hearts guys.
But really, Spielberg + Video Games = Unknown territory.
He's had GREAT SUCCESS! (see what I did there) in the film industry, and while not a personal favorite, really has made some good movies. The game looks intriguing and I will probably give it a try.
Martez @ Dec 12th 2007 4:31PM
Gameplay looks fun enough. Do something with the graphics, though. Those explosions are horrendous. This isn't an example of "you don't need fancy graphics if the gameplay is awesome" this is an example of "we're fucking lazy and don't want to spend more than 15 minutes on textures."
Jay @ Dec 12th 2007 6:02PM
As good as the gameplay may be, if the graphics immediately make me think of Club Drive on the Atari Jaguar, that's not a good sign.
Korova @ Dec 12th 2007 4:32PM
It looks like a roided up version of a Russian game called "gorodki" where you have to through a stick at a structure made of wood pieces.
http://www.strangelove.net/~kieser/Russia/gorodki.html.
Point and click is kinda lame though. You know they say that the ability to throw things is what distinguishes humans from everything else. Anyone can point and click.
bm @ Dec 12th 2007 6:27PM
Who says that? They must have never seen monkeys fling feces with deadly accuracy.
Joe Smith @ Dec 12th 2007 4:43PM
Am I the only person in the business who wishes that movie makers would stick to making movies? I make games and don't pretend I know anything about making film. Why do the film guys all assume they can make games?
ogvor @ Dec 12th 2007 5:00PM
This game does look like a lot of fun, but I'm not paying 50$ for a block simulator. Also, did this game really require Steven Speilberg to create? I'm mean, this is something that a child could quite literally think up in 5 seconds, and they waste a great film makers talents on this? Oh well, hopefully the "game that makes you cry" will be more interesting.
Abscissa @ Dec 12th 2007 5:22PM
I wish movie people would stay the fuck in the movie world. Spielburg has absolutely zero background in videogames, and therefore has no business whatsoever being anywhere near this industry.
Bah Humbug @ Dec 12th 2007 7:28PM
Look neat-o, but I'm actually more looking forward to the sequel: BOOM BLOX AND THE ATTACK OF THE PHANTOM KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL MENACE.
ELPsteel @ Dec 13th 2007 2:41AM
Lol, maybe a few years after Boom Blox comes out we'll get "Boom Blox 3: Special Edition Episode 1A" and Hayden Christensen will be edited into it.
Oh wait, wrong director =/
baby sea tuna @ Dec 13th 2007 9:04AM
No, in this one all the blocks will be digitally replaced with walkie-talkies.
ELPsteel @ Dec 13th 2007 2:39AM
Those green "chemical explosions" look HORRENDOUS. I don't care how busy the system is with physics; Elebits had what look like the same sort of physics engine and it had a million things going on at once, yet still looked better than that.
That being said, if they flesh this out into a fun and less lazy-looking experience at a lot less than 50 dollars, it is promising.
berserk @ Jan 10th 2008 4:45PM
A blatant but poorly executed rip off of little big planet, if this is all he could produce after two years then he might aswell quit now, i wonder what games he ripped off for his two other exclusives. Well it makes sense now why he teamed up with EA ...
