Downgrade Wii Photo Channel, keep playing MP3s
Would you prefer your Nintendo Wii to get jiggy wit' your Will Smith MP3s? Our first piece of advice would be to not download the new Photo Channel, version 1.1, which replaces MP3 support with AAC. If it's too late for you, then we recommend taking these simple steps, provided by Nintendo itself:
[Via NWF]
- From the main menu, click the "Wii" button
- Select Data Management
- Select Channels
- Select Photo Channel 1.1 and confirm you want to delete it
- Photo Channel 1.0, the original, automatically returns to the main menu

Stupidity at it's best, is all I can think of saying. Who even uses ACC....??? >_>
Mromson @ Dec 13th 2007 6:19AM
But then again, who uses their Wii to play music anyway?
Admiral_Mike @ Dec 13th 2007 6:32AM
Doesn't iTunes use acc?
The True Gamer @ Dec 13th 2007 8:33AM
Exactly. I have a 360 that streams media center along with my Wii. No need to use it for music.

@maddles
There's a difference between what can play it and who actually uses it. Either way, it's rather stupid that Nintendo couldn't simply support both formats at once.
garner @ Dec 13th 2007 6:34AM
AAC is the iPod default format, so we can just plug our MP3 players into the USB port and enjoy high-quality music!
Oh.

What looked more suspicious to me is that download of new Photo Channel was actually only 4 "blocks".
It looks like both Photo Channels are part of Wii Firmware - and the download is more or less launcher for the specific (1.1) Photo Channel version.
ThornedVenom @ Dec 13th 2007 7:14AM
Not supporting both formats in one updated software is weak, but Nintendo gets points for even ALLOWING people to downgrade firmware, and by GIVING out instructions how to.

It's FREE and OPTIONAL. Why is this even being discussed? I know it's tough to find fault with Wii, but my goodness people...
flameofdoom666 @ Dec 13th 2007 8:57AM
First off- I have owned a wii since Launch, and a 360 for about 2 weeks now. I have ALREADY found fault in a Wii and I am a Nintendo fanboy!
The internet service is terrible! AWFUL! In Battalion Wars 2, I cannot talk to people I am playing online with- on the other hand, when I set my 360 up,- I downloaded the free lost planet multiplayer demo- and BOOM! I was playing with people online, and with voice chat. This was within ten mins of setting my my console! It is a much superior online service.

"It's FREE and OPTIONAL. Why is this even being discussed?"
Free and Optional doesn't mean it makes sense, though maybe they had to cut corners in order to keep something manageable. But that is a generous interpretation. Moreover, since when has that been a barrier to critique?
With that attitude I don't expect to hear jack from you on PSN problems. The service is, after all, both FREE and OPTIONAL.
The Wii has problems, as do all the consoles. But why get all defensive on this minor complaint? Not even the almighty iPod is free from quirks and silly flaws.
LilCo187 @ Dec 13th 2007 9:40AM
borland, actually i was just praising the FREE PSN the other day on here....see, I am an avid antagonist of people that pay money for online service on a video game console and the companies that charge for it.
Since the PS3 and 360 are one in the same, I really hope PSN rivals Live in the coming months forcing Microsoft to eliminate the fee. Got to love capitalism!
borland502 (SDF - Macross Ring) @ Dec 13th 2007 9:59AM
"I am an avid antagonist of people that pay money for online service on a video game console"
Fair enough. But you can still wonder why they didn't include both .aac and .mp3 support on a great console eh? There are few out to tear the Wii a new asshole anymore.
LilCo187 @ Dec 13th 2007 10:11AM
In itself it is a head scratcher indeed, but one that can (and I presume will) easily be fixed through a future update. I'm pulling for PS3, if for nothing else the free online and the fact that its a perfect opposite of Wii and SHOULD be getting alot of their bread and butter (a.k.a. AMAZING exclusive 3rd party efforts)going here soon enough...Microsoft has no place in my heart.
Carlos Ovalle @ Dec 13th 2007 12:04PM
Perhaps they no longer want to pay the MP3 hardware licensing fee.
wossName @ Dec 13th 2007 4:35PM
Interesting thought, but how much lower are the license fees for AAC ?
Chris Welch @ Dec 13th 2007 12:18PM
You guys missed a pretty important sentence on that website, and probably should've mentioned this in the original post.
"Please note that Wii consoles that come with Photo Channel 1.1 pre-installed at the factory will not have the ability to delete that version and downgrade to Photo Channel 1.0 (these consoles became available at retail in December, 2007)."
Turns out that people buying the Wii now are just plain out of luck.
