Capcom is celebrating the uber-success of their PSP Monster Hunter game by throwing a party in Tokyo. The event, which will span two days (February 9-10) will give 1600 lucky registrants of the official Monster Hunter website a chance to mingle with other Monster Hunter fans. In addition, they'll be the first members of the public to try the upcoming 2G game, to continue fueling their addiction.
It's great to see Capcom engage their fan community with so much commitment. We may not understand the Japanese fascination with the Monster Hunter franchise, but we certainly are jealous of the perks they receive for their fandom.

I haven't played either yet but it looks like the kind of game I'd love if it had online multiplayer. As it is, I only know of one other person with a PSP. Even if I knew more, it would still be near impossible to organize a date and time to get together and play. All of my friends have jobs and families and they fit in their gaming whenever they can.

This is a tunneling service, it makes Ad-Hoc games become infrastructure. Currently the Monster Hunter games are the most popular on there.I remember on the weekend there were 1000+ people in them(this was back around September, when MH2 was released in the US), but right now there is only 148 in MH2 freedom (English version) and 127 in MH2 portable(Japanese version).

MHF2 is great. Seriously, its probably the best PSP game for me.
I don't know why it doesn't appeal to you guys in US (i live in asia) but this game's great. The multiplayer feature is great, but this game is still wonderful to be played solo.
And that Rathalos statue is just awesome...

I love Monster Hunter, it is definitely my favorite games on the PSP. And I'm from North America and have problems finding people to play it with. :(

*sigh* Monster Hunter. At the end of the year, Capcom's shutting down the ps2 version's online play. I guess I will be crying when the song Auld Lang Syne...
But, it looks like I have 3 other friends who love Monster Hunter Freedom, so I won't be missing out too much... just no MH for the ps2... D;

Monster Hunter is one of those game series that you can play with friends for hours on end and not get bored. Its one of those MMO's that you can just have fun with like the original PSO.
Just get a group of 4 guys that know how to play the game in one room and just watch what happens. Its really fun!
So yeah I can't understand how Americans don't like this game.

I wish MHF2 had online play. I hear 2g will, and if it's an only-Japanese release, I'll be pissed. I just got MH last week and am 30 hours deep already. This game is EXCELLENT.

I gotta question why there are still articles that question why the Japanese "love" Monster Hunter games as if it's a strange and peculiar thing. Are we forgetting that meanwhile on our side of the shore, we've got a ton of people who spend hours playing Dungeons & Dragons and Magic the Gathering?
Monster Hunter, D&D, and Magic are fun ways to temporarily develop a character and battle against fantasy creatures in fantasy settings. Nothing wrong with that.
