Halo 3 a la par with UT? are you serious? have you EVER played UT?

Halo 3 might have a good editor, but guess what, UT has had it for quite a while...

oh, and about the scores, its lame to see reviewers base their ratings on hype, seriously, how can the Halo franchise be rated higher than UT? Im not that much into FPS and I still find CS and UT much more fun, prettier, and solid than Halo....

Last I heard was UT3 on 360 in May or June, and possibly without community mod and map support. Gonk, I would hardly call that early 2008.

All three of the games you mention have very distinct styles of play, and each one is quite proficient at providing that type of experience. Which you like more is really a matter of preference, and you're entitled to your own, but understand that from the perspective of an FPS fan, Halo and UT really aren't even in direct competition.

Seriously. I'm an avid Halo fan-- I almost caved in and bought a 360 for it, and still play it with my friends all the time. UT3 is a completely different beast. More or less equal, but completely separate styles of play.

Yeah Halo is much (much) slower than UT. Then I'd say it would go to CoD4, then Battlefield, then Ghost Recon and Rainbow 6 near the slow end of the spectrum.

Personally I'd have to say CoD4 and Battlefield hit that spot (as Mr. McElroy likes to call it.).

Halo is good for a fair amount of time, especially since all my friends like it(they are movin' over to CoD4 though:D).

But UT is a little fast for me, It's not bad or unplayable by any means. It's very entertaining for short bouts though. I think the score SEEMS (I haven't played it obviously) fair when it just looks like a prettier version but not so many new things. Why mess with what's not broken?

Oh and Rainbow 6 is alright (haven't played Vegas yet), but Ghost Recon drives me nuts... probably because I just suck at it...

I've played both games and the only differences are that you move a lot faster in UT3 and have more weapons. Oh and the vehicles in UT3 control like shit compared to those in Halo, IMHO.

If that's enough to qualify it as a completely different beast, then fine, it's a different beast.

Slaziman, you probably just suck at it.

In that uber fast, ridiculous gameplay, there is so much finesse and skill. It's the only multiplayer game I could see myself watching played professionally. Does Halo have dodge jumping, wall jumping? The same kinds of awesomely balanced vehicles? The hoverboard and translocator? 40 maps? Unreal Warfare? No, Halo has forge, and many other things that make it awesome too. But they're very different.

And as to James: I agree with most of your points, and I'm completely sick of the post-apocalyptic/grungy look as well. This is one of the biggest complaints on the UT3 forums. Mod maps which, praise the gaming gods, will also be on ps3, should start to add some vibrancy to the game, though. Not to say all aren't beautiful; deimos and gateway come to mind, but many are GoW styled.

I played the demo on the PC. The lack of a translocator really screws with the game mechanics, and there is noone to play with right now. Not to mention that sales of UTIII have been terrible so far, thanks in no small part to vague and ambiguous marketing (People are still asking "Is it out yet?" on various forums etc, even though it's been out for awhile now).

I loves me some Cliffy, but I'm not buying it until there are more people to play with than there are right now. (which is counter-productive...I know)

I got this on PS3, and am loving it. There are some major bugs with voice communication and some slight lag issues here and there, but other than that it's a stellar game that gets addicting quick.

When they fix the voice chat, I'll be even more hooked. Til then, I'll just frag in silence.

I'm actually guessing it's more to do with the differing levels of expectations of a FPS on PC versus on a console. So while the PC version may be superior, it is actually getting slightly lower reviews.

I'm not trying to take a shot at joystiq, more the reviewers in general, they say (paraphrase) "UT3 isnt quite as good as on PC so were going to give it a 95%, on PC it gets a 90%"

the fact it has only been reviewed by 5 people for the PS3 and 22 for the PC could have something to do with the skewing of it too.

You have to remember, console gamers are still new to the concept of shooters that don't suck. UT3 is good at what it does, but it isn't special, which is why the lower (though still brownosing) scores.

I'd probably stuff it at around a 7.5. Good, but not great.

The PC version shipped with menus blatantly meant for the ps3 version. They were pretty, but with the mouse and keyboard something more functional is required. The beta patch fixed it within a week after community uproar (gotta love Epic for that), but not in time to save review scores.

And I think, for a console game, UT3, running at a high, stable framerate with graphics nearly equal to those available on PC, is a fucking huge accomplishment. It must look unbelievably good on HDTV setups-- all for a mere $400 ps3. That deserves some points in and of itself.

Looks good on HD setups? What the hell do you think the PC is, still running at 640x480?

I think that the contrast in scoring for the two platforms can probably be blamed on the (as said above) expectations of the group, and the availability of similar experiences on that platform. On the PC, you've got a lot of big contenders for your multiplayer frag time... so adding UT3 to the mix of hundreds of other online FPS games, with crummy menus, practically no advertising, and mostly just a huge graphical update of UT2004 doesn't really say "buy" to PC gamers.

For the PS3 on the other hand, you've got only two or three good online shooters. Adding UT3 to the mix of those doesn't hurt at all, it just expands it.

One thing many people are overlooking though is that the PS3 version (to my knowledge) cannot make moods on it's own - if you want to have fun with that, you've got to get the PC version as well and make the mods there. Kind of a shitty decision if you're into the PS3 version, and judging from the sparse number of mods made for the 2004 version, I think that if you're not happy with the base game, you shouldn't hold out for mods to make it better - 'cuz they probably aren't gonna come.

"The real significance with Unreal Tournament III on the PS3, however, is the Community support. For the first time in a console FPS, you're finally able to implement your own user-created mods – maps, modes, player creations – into the game. It's a feature that will no doubt take a lot of time and dedication. To devoted fans, however, it's a stellar inclusion."

Except for the fact that all of Unreal Tournaments "devoted fans" already got this game for PC a month ago.

I wish Unreal games were a little less generic and had an actual story. UT2004 was the biggest waste of money for me. Absolute hate the gameplay. Some people love it though. Make sure you've play this one before you buy it. It's a little different than most people are used to.

I don't find FPS games fun at all. All you do is line up the sights and shoot. Maybe lead a bit to compensate for lag, but that's all to it.

Here's my UT talking points:

1) It's ever so slightly slowed for PS3 vs. on the PC (which you can undo with speed mutators). This makes a HUGE difference to me as it makes the game both playable with a controller and actually enjoyable rather than the twitchy, spastic, double-jumping bunny fest that UT had become.

In this sense this game easily beats the multiplayer from Halo 3: UT3 is a bit faster paced (but not too much), but also well balanced and better looking. Rent Halo 3 to beat the single player, but buy UT3.

2) Playing with a controller actually works out okay. The best Keyboard and Mouse player will still beat the best controller player, but nothing feels as good as when I beat some K&M players with a controller. Adds insult to injury.

3) Graphics look real good and a LOT like Gears. This game basically looks like Gears 2 (especially the cut scenes).

4) I appreciate the single-player story they tacked on. It's pointless but I found it no less pointless than the cliche plot of games like Gears, so it adds a nice single player dimension to what is usually an ignored aspect of the game.

5) The vehicle play is great: adds a nice layer to further prevent the spastic fragging.

6) I'm a bit over the "grungy, futuristic, apocalyptic, cursing guys with huge forearms" aesthetic, but whatever. Fans of Gears will dig it.

7) There are some bugs: voice chat and some lag with poor servers. Also: the menu/UI is actually pretty horrible (it's WAY too easy to accidentally erase your single player game). Also it spits you out of a level when you lose just so you can reload the level again to retry. What kind of sadistic designer does this?

Overall: possibly the best shooter on a console yet (although you have to appreciate the UT style) and something that is a large step to completely eliminating the divide between PCs and consoles. If only it had PC vs. PS3 play. I was pleasantly surprised: if you thought UT was too spastic before, they've definitely refined things with this one. Feels like a whole new beast.

My fucking GOD, I LOVE UT3 on the PC. Its so fast (just as its always been) and the hit recognition seems to be just right, and its not impossible to get a head shot.

The only things I wish they would tweak is the vehicle handling and make it more responsive and make the aiming with the Paladin and Dark Walker a bit more snappy. Along with that, make the Manta a bit slower and weaker, and also make the distance in which you can hear the vehicles greater, because there is nothing suckier than getting decapitated by a Manta when there is no way to suspect it.

Halo 3 added a pretty significant feature with Forge - for Halo. You're doing fairly limited 'mods' in Halo 3's forge, this is a different 'level,' literally: If you have the 3D and design chops, you could build something that wouldn't even look like UT. Levels could look like a supermarket, an aircraft carrier, or a golf course with smurfs if you wanted your mod to look like that.

This is the sort of thing that spawned 'Counter Strike' and 'Battlefield 2.' Communities creating what they wanted over the engine of a game.

Thing is, few people have those 3D and design chops. So we may never see "Smurf Strike IV: Murder Mulligan on the Back Nine." I certainly couldn't do it. But maybe I've planted the seed in some modders mind...

*Did anyone catch that "Fore!" joke in there? Nah? No one reads these things? Oh well. Nevermind.
