Rumor: Killzone 2 and LittleBigPlanet coming Fall 2008
We're afraid your secret wish for Go! Team fueled romps through velvety, user-submitted playgrounds isn't going to be fulfilled for quite some time -- neither will your desire to play the highly anticipated sequel to the original "Halo Killer". According to a recent post on Three Speech (a "semi official" Playstation blog), both LittleBigPlanet and Killzone 2 aren't going to see the light of day until September or October of next year. While an official due date for Killzone 2 hasn't been nailed down yet, this new information contradicts the last release date we heard for LittleBigPlanet, which was "early 2008."
We're holding out hope that these new schedules for big black's two potential killer apps are pure conjecture, but considering Three Speech's partnership with Sony, we're guessing that they know something that we don't; like, for instance, which dark, secret pastes give Phil Harrison's dome its intoxicating sheen.

Looks like the PS3 won't be hitting its stride until 2009. Analysts get your pens ready.

"...both LittleBigPlanet and Killzone 2 aren't going to see the light of day until September or October of next year."
On the Xbox 360...
Van Faulk @ Dec 15th 2007 12:11PM
Ouch. Well, at leats MGS4 is still slated for early 08 and still exclusive.
Right?
BananaBoat @ Dec 15th 2007 1:56PM
It pains me to say this, but the latest issue of EGM puts MGS4 at late spring to early fall. It's amazing that the day after I order my 80gb PS3 (got a 100 dollar discount, otherwise I'd have gone for the 40) the 3 games I was looking forward to playing the most, have all been pushed back. Oh well...looks like I'll only have Mario Kart/Super Smash Bro's to play this upcoming winter
SoulBlade @ Dec 15th 2007 12:16PM
cue delaystation3 jokes.
other than those two titles and mgs4, what are the big names that are coming exclusive to ps3?
Catdogburger @ Dec 15th 2007 12:26PM
GT 5
Poisoned Al @ Dec 15th 2007 12:25PM
"This is waiting!"
...
Sorry.
Secura @ Dec 15th 2007 12:26PM
Just look at the PS3 games list on wikipedia and set it by exclusivity. Trust me, there are plenty of great titles.
MosquitoControl @ Dec 15th 2007 1:00PM
Secura - I got Little Big Planet, Haze, Red Dead Revolver 2, Uncharted, and that's it.
Not many interesting exclusives at all. Unless you love watching JRPGS or unless you think Killzone 2 will be good despite the suckage of Killzone.
PS3 just has very, very few interesting exclusives announced. The Wii is pretty much the exact same way. That extra year really benefitted the 360 more than I think most people expected. It got some killer exclusives during that time. Of course, so did the PS2...
Secura @ Dec 15th 2007 2:46PM
I guess you just skimmed it then. I see The Agency, God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, InFamous, Motorstorm 2, Tekken 6, White Knight Story, and the other exclusives that are already out. Maybe it's just your taste in games, but the PS3's list looks like a better quality list than the other consoles'.
Plus a lot I don't know anything about.
Joshua @ Dec 15th 2007 12:25PM
Rumors are false. Check out what Surfer Girl said about them.
XanthouS @ Dec 15th 2007 12:38PM
"big black's two potential killer apps"?
MGS4, FFXIII, and GT5 don't make that list?
SoulBlade @ Dec 15th 2007 12:41PM
I had thought FF13 was slated for 09. Not sure about GT5.
copa @ Dec 15th 2007 12:43PM
MGS4 counts.
FFXIII and GT5 are not likely to be released in 2008. And the paid demo, err... "Prologue" doesn't count.
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 15th 2007 12:44PM
well FFXIII is probably coming out Spring 09 seeing as how they're so tight-lipped about the project and then expect FF Versus XIII a year later.
And I think what he meant by "big black's two potential killer apps" is extremely significant killer apps...games that can bring the PS3 mainstream.
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Dec 15th 2007 12:41PM
I think what the strategy should be is to spread their releases.
For example, MGS4 is coming out in Spring and that's got the PS3 mostly covered for about 3 months. Then I think they should release LittleBigPlanet before Summer, and then Killzone 2 in Fall.
They should just do what Nintendo did and give breathing space for their releases.
Van Faulk @ Dec 15th 2007 12:56PM
You obviously don't own a wii. We dind't call that grand empty expanse having to subside on VC games and PSP ports 'breathing room' we called it a drought. And if it weren't for the fact that now there are inexplicabley like 12 wii games i REALLY wnat to play now, I'd be pissed. People were using these as justifictaion for the ps3 dominating 08 like ratchet and uncharted were supposed to help them dominate holiday.
Sony NEEDS to get games out there that make the system worht owning. Even with the sales spike from the 40g it still dind't beat the 360, and the non hardcore gamers are only going to wait for so long.
copa @ Dec 15th 2007 12:57PM
"I think what the strategy should be is to spread their releases."
I think their strategy should be to release some fucking games.
Software quality is subjective, but 2006 and 2007 sucked ass for the PS3. There were no must-have exclusives.
Now, I'm looking ahead to 2008 and the ONLY games I am super pumped about are PS3 games. LittleBigPlanet, MGS4, Burnout Revenge (PS3 lead platform).
I have no problems with waiting for these games to be finished before releasing them, but Sony is not in a position to be sitting on finished games so they can "space out" their AAA releases.
They have to get these games out as soon as they are ready if they want to move their hardware. December will be another humiliating month when the sales numbers come in. Sony exclusives aren't selling, and they are being outsold on the multiplatforms by 3:1 or 4:1 on the 360.
Polite game journalists are not going to say this, but they are getting close to the point of no return with third-party game publishers. They are close to cementing themselves as a port platform that plays Blu-Rays.
2008 is Sony's big opportunity to save its gaming division. They have the best software lineup for the next year. If they squander it by trying to be too clever with marketing and scheduling, the PS3 deserves to be buried next to 3DO.
Baeron @ Dec 15th 2007 12:51PM
I still don't know what this "semi-official" silliness means.
gannon64 @ Dec 15th 2007 12:51PM
Uncharted is a 3-D pitfall or Indiana Jones wannabe and Little Big Planet is an Animal Crossing with better graphics. MGS4 isn't a system seller like Halo or Mario is and each cross platform title is superior for the 360 in every way, but the next Final Fantasy will move PS3's in Japan for less than a month and a half only and Wii will reclaim #1 after that. So what's the reason for staying loyal to Sony?
hotnutz @ Dec 15th 2007 1:51PM
Hmmm sounds like someone can't admit that there are already plenty of great titles on the PS3 and that it is a hell of a lot of fun. If you even bothered to play Uncharted, you would see that it is much more than a 3-D Pitfall. That statement is similar to me saying that Halo 3 is like Rise of the Triad with slightly better graphics.
My statement is obviously wrong and even though I dislike Halo 3, it has an extremely polished multiplayer component and a decent story. I can admit that and even though I dislike the game I respect that a lot of 360 love it. It's just not for me.
The "hardcores" on this site are so blind with devotion to their console they are missing the point that the other consoles are great and have plenty for them.
This site really has become a joke in terms of trying to have any kind of intelligent debate. I admit, I get sucked into the flame wars from time to time because it can be fun but after a while, you would like to have a good debate but it simply non-existent on this site. Is it because the people who come to this site are die hard fans? Unable to accept that they can be wrong from time to time?
Kotaku is not much better but it is still a notch above this site. I truly wish there was a game site that encouraged rational and well thought out comments and that people like Fernando would be instantly banned for posting constant drivel.
voloftn @ Dec 15th 2007 2:34PM
You sir, are a true PS fanboi. There is no rational debate with you. Your console is losing this race and you're just pissed that there isn't a site out there that will let you cry on its shoulder.
FYI, I am invested in all three consoles.
finnith @ Dec 15th 2007 2:42PM
gannon
Your name is like ganon. This makes you a Nintendo fanboy. Therefore, you suck like all fanboys do and hence your opinion is rendered null.
Go away. I don't like people like you in society,
Lekko @ Dec 15th 2007 3:36PM
Because, I'm a real gamer who wants to play ALL the good games. Not just all the good games on only one system.
Jonah Falcon @ Dec 15th 2007 12:55PM
Home (”a little later in 2008″), and Metal Gear Solid 4 (”no idea”).
Oy.
gannon64 @ Dec 15th 2007 1:03PM
First off MGS4 is a big time system seller in all major gaming continents and the next FFXIII will keep the PS3 in the number 1 spot worldwide in every market for the next 2 years once it's released! Be prepared for Sony's worldwide domination of the videogame market you heartless troll!
gannon64 @ Dec 15th 2007 1:05PM
Sorry PS3 gamers from stealing the words straight from your blistered rectum box!
Worst Review Ever @ Dec 15th 2007 1:15PM
Oh, I get it.
Jeff @ Dec 15th 2007 1:11PM
Little Big Planet has always looked good, but christ-- Killzone 1 sucked! Killzone 2 doesn't seem to have anything going for it beyond graphics.
Haze, though, looks fucking awesome. And a professionaly written story, that is partly allegory... I want a PC port-- 3 owes us that for UT. =P
Jonah Falcon @ Dec 15th 2007 1:33PM
Haze has gotten some seriously negative buzz. It's also limited silent exclusivity (like the GTA3 games - limited exclusivity, no discussion of other versions til 6 months later.)
Noshino @ Dec 15th 2007 4:33PM
negative buzz? actually, it is being praised around the media, hell, like Jeff said, the story seems to be great....there was a big interview with one of the devs about it, it just gets better and better...
oh, Jeff, if you get a chance, play Killzone 1 on a PS3, it is MUCH better, seriously, it is much more fun...like many people have stated before, the PS2 wasn't able to handle it.. =(
Trev (Completely Normal Human Defense Force) @ Dec 16th 2007 4:17AM
I just wish they'd stop talking about the damn story though. They gave away that you switch sides. They gave away that Mantel uses the drugs to alter their soldiers experiences and so on.
Listen, Free Radical, I'm hoping for good stuff out of your game, but you need to get it done and on the shelf, preferably with a demo so I can try it first without finding a rental. I don't want it rushed, but I want to have it.
LAZoftheTamarinds @ Dec 15th 2007 1:46PM
I'm looking forward to Little Big Planet!
Killzone 2... umm... it can wait.
But why must it take so long!
Bluebrake @ Dec 15th 2007 2:13PM
Wasn't LBP scheduled for release in Fall 2007 just a few months ago? How does a game made primarily out of user-generated content get delayed so far?
TheGuy @ Dec 15th 2007 2:43PM
``How does a game made primarily out of user-generated content get delayed so far?``
For that exact reason. With so many options available in the game, it needs to be rigorously tested to catch as many glitches as possible and fix them. I`d rather have them take their time to catch the glitches, rather than releasing the game unready like Ubisoft did with the glitch-fest Assassins Creed
gonk @ Dec 15th 2007 8:32PM
assassin's creed had glitches? i never saw any (360 version)
Obie @ Dec 15th 2007 2:29PM
Ouch, well...by that time the PS3 might go through another price cut. I might pick one up when they are $299!
gonk @ Dec 15th 2007 8:36PM
damn straight obie, by the time all these supposed "system movers" all get released, the ps3 will be affordable! I'm holding out for $250 though
Mr Khan @ Dec 15th 2007 2:37PM
I was expecting as much from Killzone 2, but i thought LBP was on track for a spring release, especially considering that that's a game that can rely more heavily on DLC to flesh out the experience after it comes out
giantenemycrab @ Dec 15th 2007 3:21PM
Hmm, I haven't felt this feeling for a while. That "what the **** are you think Sony" feeling.
giantenemycrab @ Dec 15th 2007 3:22PM
*thinking.
Slaziman (B-B-BRUSHED WITH FAAAAME) @ Dec 15th 2007 4:28PM
So... I herd u liek mudkipz?
Lekko @ Dec 15th 2007 3:41PM
It really wouldn't be so bad if Sony got more 'filler' titles like the other systems.
You know the type, they're good for the most part, plenty of flaws, maybe short... just something to do while you wait for the next real big game.
AK @ Dec 16th 2007 5:54PM
they tried that once... it didnt go well...
or maybe the name lair just put people off.
Max @ Dec 15th 2007 3:50PM
Yay Go! Team. I love them. I even got to see them at Glastonbury. Go Go! Team.
Chainblast @ Dec 15th 2007 5:06PM
Gamespot had Media Molecule on their E3 2007 stage show where they said the game would be available around July 2008 with a beta in early 2008. They also mentioned user generated content from the beta could make it's way to the final release. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone paying attention. Unless I'm wrong of course...
There is also a pretty strong release list through the first half of 2008 including Burnout Paradise, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Grand Theft Auto 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4.
RPGJock @ Dec 15th 2007 5:54PM
At GDC 2007, LBP was suppose to be beta in fall 2007 and released winter 2008. Killzone 2 never got an official release date or even tried to say it was coming out soon. I could have told everyone it was not going to come out until Oct 2008.
RPGJock @ Dec 15th 2007 5:47PM
Sony needs to stop listening to that marketing team and start listening the their userbase. Start bring out exclusives one per month and stop trying to wait to Christmas to sell the damn things. Don't put LBP up against Pikmin Wii or Viva Pinata 2 (you know those are coming next Christmas.) Stop throwing an unproven shooter out when you have 10 other shooters being out in the market. Give people a reason to buy the damn system before Christmas instead of waiting for Christmas...
LEARN FROM UNCHARTED AND RATCHET & CLANK SONY!!! Heavenly Sword sold decent because it didn't try come out after Halo or during other triple A titles (COD4 and Assassins)
*sigh* there is no talking to them...
Kite @ Dec 16th 2007 10:09AM
Making games is not easy, and it also doesn't help to throw massive amounts of money at it.
They need time, give them the time they need and quit being so demanding.
