Street Fighter III: Third Strike -- the greatest fighting game hardly anyone played -- makes its way to GameTap on Dec. 20. To the many who know the fine, detailed, beyond-minutia intricacies of fighting games, SFIII: Third Strike represents the last great 2D fighter. GameTap has gotten hold of the Dreamcast version of the game, which means that both PC and Mac users will have access.
For those with specialty fighting sticks, GameTap supports a wide range of controllers and there's an official list available, but many more work that aren't listed. The game will not support online play because neither did the Dreamcast version. So check out SFIII: Third Strike and join fighter aficionados everywhere in enjoying a vintage treat.

Personally, I'd say that Garou: Mark of the Wolves was the last great 2D fighter (since it came out a few months after Third Strike did). To me, Third Strike was interesting but annoying, and I don't have the fond memories for it that I did for Mark of the Wolves.
Still a damn good game, though. I'm not disputing that.

were you ever into Guilty Gear? That was pretty decent too - had really fluid animation and some craziness.
I'll personally take the SF series over any other. Didn't try Mark of the Wolves, but for some reason, I could never really get into Fatal Fury the way I did SF.

It was indeed a great game (still is). The best thing about Garou was how balanced the game was. I played the game with just about every character and enjoyed using all of them. Which is very rare for a fighting game...I usually just stick with 2-3 characters.

Guilty gear is still patched to this day. Probably one of the more balanced 2D fighters from what hear--anything that has been patched that much should be. 3S still remains me favorite 2D fighter yet though.

Yeah, MoTW was much better than this game, but thats just like saying Michael Jordan was better than Clyde Drexler, its just not a fair comparison to make. I also agree that this game doesn't have the ridiculous level of tune and balance that MoTW did. If you haven't played it based on your previous experience with Fatal Fury you're really missing out, nothing against the FF games but MoTW is a serious distance above its FF brethren.
Also, Guilty Gear...its just OK. I can see why some serious players enjoy it, and I'll definitely play it if given the chance against a real opponent. I know the XB versions were so laggy they made online MP superfluous.

uh, King of Fighters XI just came out here a week or so ago and it's good as hell.
SF3 is awesome, and I wish I knew about it when it came out (it just blew right past me somehow), but to say it's the last great 2d fighter is nonsense.
i'd seriously love to see a new 2d fighter franchise appear on 360/ps3. something cool and new and in FULL HAND DRAWN HD would totally rule.

yeah, that way we can have a 2D fighter with jerky animation and characters that look like they're pasted onto the background images!

Yeah I'm a bit disappointed that Capcom decided to create a HD version of a really old fighting game. They should have put that effort into a new SF game.

@SoulBlade,
Oh of course SF IV is HD, but I meant a 2D version.

Guys, Capcom USA and Capcom Japan are two different companies. I'm pretty sure Capcom USA is making the SF2HD and Capcom Japan is working on SF4. So rest assured; they're not really wasting valuable manpower on SF2HD (I mean seriously.. what was the last great thing Capcom USA did? Oh yeah CVS2EO? I think I vomitted a little in my mouth when I said that.)

SJ- I thought it had been announced that SFIV is going to be some type of 3D rendered on a 2D plane type of game? Maybe I misinterpreted it, I'm sure it was on Joystiq in the last few weeks.

SF3 is awesome, the art and characters are great, not even talking about the sweet tight gameplay

Psst...the Capcom CPS3 board was figured out by some guys a few months ago, and all CPS 3 ROMS are now playable on your PC.
I don't condone such behavior though.

Btw, how many of you would love to see an online-play enabled version of SF 3: Third Strike or SF Alpha 3 on the Wii's Wiiware? You know it's totally possible. Heck I would pay quite a bit for both games.

You mean until you actually tried to play it with the 360's gamepad.

A Street Fighter Alpha 3 HD Remix on XBLA would be a wet dream. That's a lot of characters to redraw, though. Online play would would be sex.

No online play? Sorry GameTap, I love ya to death and all, but this time? Fail. (Why the hell get a game like that when you could easily get the arcade version? like everyone's said, it's already emulated)
