360 streaming doesn't require Windows MCE or Windows at all either...you're clearly not familiar with the situation.

I think that the MCE part of the system is handled by a different group inside E&D than the Xbox system software team. I'm sure that eventually they'll roll out a version that incorporates these changes.

yeah nate, 360 works on DLNA also, through the dashboard. Its what I used with TVersity until I acquire Windows MCE 2005.

wtf?! i'm all for updated support, but Sony should limit their updates...it's friggin' annoying to download a new firmware every other week/month...and apple's iTunes are the same way.

As nice as this is, it's not replacing my modded xbox with XBMC.

Still no Xvid support. Can't play files over 2GB. Can't play copy-righted material.

Those seem to be the only major limitations. No Xvid support is a downer. The 2GB file limit can be a problem in a few situations. Not being able to play copy-righted material will suck for those trying to obtain videos legitimately.

Well now that both of them support most of my video files, can I get some subtitle support? For videos with separate subtitle files obviously.

Yes, that's right people, added functionality is bad. (and here comes the argument that they should have added everything up front - please tell me, which console does that? Heck, Microsoft said HDMI was moot and would not be needed - they quickly changed their tune - the Wii is adding stuff to their system as well - it's a good thing people.)

I do find it humourous that the people who are bitching the loudest about this added functionality are the people who don't even own a PS3. Makes one wonder what other insecurities they harbour?

cool. wish they had held off the 2.00 firmware until they had this ready (didnt feel the 2.00 had a groundbreaking feature like this is) but better late than never. most of the DivX vids ill be watching are under 2GB and illegally obtained anyway so i shouldnt have a problem with the restrictions. WMV is something i am pleasantly surprised about since i have ALOT of files in that format on my PC as well. i still need a video playlist but this will open my PC video library to my PS3 without the need for Nero Mediahome. way to go Sony.

I downloaded simplecenter, and it is a very easy tool to use to stream/copy files from your PC to PS3. Works like Tversity. Lets see how the new codecs do on this firmware update.

"Heck, Microsoft said HDMI was moot and would not be needed - they quickly changed their tune"

HDMI is moot, and isnt needed for gaming. And it was in their plans from the beginning to support HDMI "when it makes sense"
Here is the quote from Todd Holmadahl that your referring to:
Xbox 360 will support HD component video output, which is compatible with nearly every HD-ready TV on the market today. We’re poised to hit the sweet spot of the HD market at launch and as the market matures, and we will provide an HDMI for our customers when it makes sense. The reality is, you don’t need HDMI for HD gaming.

And yes, updating your console 9 times before you get a decent addition is a good reason to bitch.
