On this fifth annual "International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers," we remind you to tip -- but not to kill -- your service providers. According to The Toronto Sun, Anastasia Kuzyk of the Sex Workers' Alliance of Toronto believes that games like Grand Theft Auto feed into the "subculture of allowing the violence to continue," and that violence "against sex workers should not be normalized, but it is." Although she doesn't mention GTA by name in the quote, it's the only well-known game we can think of that lets you "run down prostitutes and kill them and beat them up and take their money."
Kuzyk has cause for concern, as 171 female sex workers (no stats on men given) were killed between '91 and '04 in Toronto. This is also not the first time in recent memory that GTA has received flak from sex worker advocates, though there's no word yet on whether GTA IV will allow for the ironically health-enhancing activity of picking up a prostitute like in other installments in the series. So, Happy International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers everyone! Boy, that's a mouthful.

We are talking about Toronto, and if we're talking about Jane and Finch in particular, the answer might actually be yes. And unfortunately, it's far from awesome.

If GTA singled out prosties as the only people you could kill, then I'd agree. Unfortunately, you can kill every ethnic group, gender, social class, and type of worker in GTA as much or as little as you want to. GTA is the equal opportunity murder simulator!

I do love selective stats....
171 of your kind were killed in the span of 13 years. And then you state the highest risk to violence comes from the street level workers. I guess I really have to ask...
You KNOW GTA is not a 13 year old series, right? And to top that aspect off, being paid to fuck unsavory men at random is a risky preoccupation, apparently.
You know, Road Construction workers die more often, you don't see them blaming Ridge Racer. Look, you're whores. From the beginning of your occupation, in the earliest of societies, you've been the victim of violent men. What to change this? Get a job where your opening line isn't "Well I suck pretty good, but I don't swallow."

So your solution to ending violence against sex workers is to eliminate their job - which is in fact, pretty much the oldest job in human society. Bravo.

agreed and agreed.
GTA as a series is only 9 years old.
and to add a cherry to the top, GTA 3, which was the first in the series to let you pick up, fuck, then kill hookers, was only release in 2001, so it is 6 years old.
What happened to the other 7 years? getting choked a little too hard while on the job? sure, whatever you want to believe.
But we're all human, even the dregs of society have rights too... i guess.

WTF, it has value because it's the oldest industry? It's also a primal urge so they kinda go hand in hand. It has no value in todays society since all the uglies in the world have the internet to "hook up" each other.
I don't mind if a prostitute is murdered. Or rather I'm not surprised. Just as much as if a terrorist or someone else bringing down society would have died.
X-treem view. Perhaps.

Ummm, no. Way to misconstrue. I think fidlious's point is this.
If your job is known to be hazardous in some way, you can't exactly feign ignorance or worse yet, blame the media for a problem which has been around for a long, long time. But hey, here's a thought.
How about, in order to stem the problem of violence towards whores, we cut the whores out of the problem entirely. Of course a vast majority of whores and even porn stars have tragedies in their past and they disconnect sex with love. Sometimes this is sexual abuse from a stranger or a loved one.
So how about we start turning all these crazy child rapist into Eunichs? After all, no more drunken stepfather fucks his ten year old stepdaughter and bammo, the victim of today is no longer the whore of tomorrow. Instead of trying to act like sexual abuse isn't a central theme to the workforce, let's work on actually stemming the problem that compels nymphomania? Likewise, no longer make a vast majority of drugs an illegal substance and start making it a controlled substance. You'd be suprised how many young females will quite selling their cherries if the government started making crystal meth a controlled substance.
But yes, he did say it. If you want to avoid violence, do not join a workforce where it is prevelant. Simple as that. I mean, I have a natural aversion to being shot, thus I'm neither police officer nor gang banger. Go fig... common sense. And likewise, only a couple retards in the world declare GTA to be the problem in the rise of police deaths instead of lax gun control and the rise of Crystal Method.

Yes, let's blame video games for every problem that we cannot solve ourselves.
This is a lot like Prohibition in post-WWI America. They believed that many of peoples' problems would be fixed if we got rid of alcohol; people would take to the streets in an attempt to fix what was wrong with the US and make a Utopia. What actually happened? Crime rose considerably and speakeasies were born.
Just watch, we'll have our M/AO-rated game speakeasies in due time if all this anti-video game crap leads to the banishment of such things.

Speakeasies? We have the internet these days. Games can be distributed and sell without needing ratings...
Also, for some reason, I can't really picture the mob getting involved in video games. The reason people go after video games is because video game nerds are easy targets.

Actually in TO prositution is legal as long as it is not a brothel and for some reason they can't do it in doors. which is very weird.
Plus you have to realize that the Toronto Sun is a piece of crap newspaper. They have been caught making up stories as well as sensationalizing everything just to sell a paper. (i.e. Today all the headlines were about the huge snowstorm that just hit and their headline was "SNOW JOB", attention whore.)
They're the Toronto newspaper equivalent of Fox News with a little bit of the Weekly World News thrown in and a generous sprinkling of 1st grade level writing.

Sex workers? Is the world that oblivious to reality and feel they need to protect a person's feelings? They sell their bodies for cash, (I think it's immoral).
Here are some better words that SHOULD be used:
-Prostitute (simple, non-offensive)
-Hooker (see above)
-Whore (you get paid for sex, your a whore, stop crying
and accept it)

First, no one gives a shit about your personal views on morality. kthx
But your little semantic hissy-fit is misplaced, as well. A 'sex worker' can also be a stripper or an escort, for instance, and there are many in both categories that don't engage in money-for-sex transactions, though there's often a blurring of the lines when it comes to many so-called escort services. Either way, there are professions, or ways to make a living, that fall under the 'sex worker' category, but not the 'whore' or 'prostitute' category.
It's their business, their industry, so what right do we have to tell them what they should be called?

Well said fugori. Violence against this group isn't justified, no matter how immoral you think their work is. If that's what they want to do, let them do it. And don't act like it's okay for these PEOPLE to be injured or murdered just because YOU don't agree with what they do.
Half the time, those who are so busy calling them whores are the ones paying them for sex anyway.

Gee, we've got a couple of testy guys here. Why pick on J-guy when most everybody else on this entire page is saying the exact same thing in different diction? Considering what's relevant to the topic, and to common sense, J-guy's correlation of sex workers to whores is fairly justified.

"Sex worker" is actually a catch-all term that applies to anyone in the sex industry -- not just prostitutes. Sex workers are adult film stars, strippers, phone sex operators, cam-sex operators, etc. It's a legitimate (and extremely profitable) industry that gets marginalized because it's, well, about sex.

Tremble before the powerful sex workers' union!
Seriously though, she makes a much better point than most game violence critics. She isn't saying that GTA causes hooker killing, she's saying that it contributes to a culture where that act is considered ordinary. Kind of like it contributes to the culture of violence as a whole -- but the general culture of violence is so large and all-encompassing of media that GTA is a drop in the bucket. Prostitute violence, on the other hand, is somewhat unique to GTA in the entertainment media.
And while I wouldn't say GTA exactly *encourages* killing prostitutes (or "awards points" as the most deranged critics have claimed), well, what else is there to do with them? You can have sex with them, and then what? You've only got one action button, and it doesn't hand them flowers.
I doubt very much that GTA will ever cause someone to go beat up/murder a prostitute. She may have a point, though, that it "normalizes" the violence, just like jokes about dead prostitutes do. Maybe it makes them just that much easier to forget or shrug off when we hear about it on the news, and that's a little sad.

At the very least it deserves consideration. I don't think anyone can make a good case that violence in video games has a strong causal relationship with violence in life, but we shouldn't immediately dismiss things like this. It doesn't help our case, as gamers, in the long term. So yeah, consider it, think about what it means when someone grows up surrounded by these sorts of stimuli, what it means with regard to the way they view the world.

I'm used to creepy little fanboys carrying on in comments. You might even say it's "normalized". But jesus christ, it's really ugly to read a bunch of guys yapping about "whassa problem wit' sum ded hoors? Hoors get deded!"
When a terrorist beheads a soldier, I doubt these guys are saying "Yeah, that's what happens to soldiers. So what?" But they seem to think that violence against prostitutes is just the way things are (or in some horrifying cases, they think it's a good thing because bitches who have sex deserve killin').
Christ, it's enough to make me think Kuzyk is right. Except that I fear this level of sex-hating misogyny is just as bad among people who don't play GTA.
