If this was all I had to go on, I'd be disappointed. But, combine this with Broussard's response to the hype:

"Guys just to manage expectations...

This is a teaser. It's not a full blown trailer like the 2001 trailer (but something like that is coming). I tried to be clear about that in the message board post, so just bear in mind that it's a teaser :)

Enjoy."

and noting the "but something like that is coming", and finally considering the many posts by "surfergirl" which matter-of-factly state a 2008 release for the game, and I think the pieces are adding up, and I'm finding myself uncharacteristically hopeful.

The question of whether or not this title has a place in modern culture is answered with a resounding maybe

If they market this as a parody to the prolific alien shooters that we have to deal with today (Halo, Gears, Metroid, Resistance), then it could rule, but if they stick to the old formula, it probably will not

Who knows how the hell this game is going to end up. But is this waiting time any worse than having 3 or 4 really crappy Duke games within the past 10 years? Maybe this will be a good game. But I'm glad they didn't put out a crappy game just to please the fans every two or three years. This franchise could have ended up like Tomb Raider (although that's in decidedly better hands now). But at least we'll get a game and they might just tap into that nostalgia market that's been helping boost sales on the VC and XBLA. I'm hoping for the best, but not putting my bets on Duke, as that old trailer once promoted.

To be honest, I'd be perfectly satisfied with the old formula.

There no longer is any expectation for this, in my opinion. No pressure. It's been abandoned by too many, become the quintessential piece of vaporware for the masses to point at. There are so many quality games being made right now, DNF would just be a drop in the bucket. Nothing is riding on this.

The old formula with a facelift would be just fine as far as I'm concerned, and whether or not Duke's tongue-in-cheek machismo and misogyny is "relevant" is a non-issue.

Well, if they took the Duke Nukem attitude that you mentioned, and would use it to parody guys like Marcus Fenix and Master Chief, it would be all kinds of win

However, hardass for the sake of hardass is no longer cool, at least IMO

10 year wait be damned, I honestly got giddy after watching that trailer.

I may have started my FPS binge with Wolfenstein on an old Win 3.1 486 years and years ago but Duke 3D was the game that made me a long-time FPS lover.

This teaser gave me that nostalgic feeling and I got all warm inside. It reminded me of a time when I played with Legos, GI Joes, and the only gaming console that mattered had Nintendo's branding. I didn't have bills or responsibilities to keep me away from fun.

In DNF, I'm not expecting the next Metroid Prime, Halo, Half Life, or Call of Duty. I'm expecting B movie cheese with a whole lotta alien gore.

Maybe I'm just old and nostalgic, but I'll be getting this day one.

Truer words were never spoke. Too bad Bruce Campbell uttered most of them already. XD

I think I want the song played in the teaser more than anything, since it sounds like a newer version of the Duke Nukem theme by Megadeth. They could get Megadeth to do a new theme for it, and I'd buy the game on the spot and just listen to the intro movie over and over XD

I've never waited in anticipation for this game, but if it ever does come out, I'm sure I can enjoy it somewhat.

I just took a nap and when I wake up I found this, wow is it doomsday already?

Anyway good to have you back Duke but what's up with that hair? oh and by the way saying you are going to take a dump on an alien is not acceptable anymore but I think you can say “I going to take a doo-doo on and extraterrestrial” yeah I think that would please the ESBR, Oh and try to be a little more respectful when you encounter a female character. We don’t want to get women rights associations on your back or anything and keep the violence a bit down this time and if you could omit words like “shit” or “fuck” that would be perfect because you don’t want to get banned in the U.K right?

And if at the end you could give a message about how playing with guns is wrong and how we can all help to protect the environment that would awesome maybe that could get us the “M” rating.

Yes Duke Times have change since you were missing.

I understand the apprehension, but I really think (on second viewing) that the scenes with the aliens are in-engine. And they look pretty good. Which would be alright news. Not great, but not totally meaningless (as this article implies).

So you gleaned that information from viewing it a second time?
Was it like getting a second opinion?

no, it was looking seeing something a second time and knowing what to look for, thereby being better able to notice indicators of whether something is gameplay footage or not.

Maybe the reason why it's called Duke Nukem: Forever; is because we'll have to wait forever for it.
