Well, for many reasons I did not buy GHIII, but was pondering it.
Now? Not a chance. I'll wait for Rock Band in March (yay European gamer) and keep a GHII guitar.

And now, a little theater:
*ACT I (June 2007)*
Harmonix: Hey, some people will buy GHIII, so we should accept their guitars. Maybe we won't sell as much of ours, but it would be cool for the consumer.
Activision: No. Go away, we won't tell you how our fabulicious guitars work.
Harmonix: Well, on 360, you must. MS asks for it.
Activision: Fuck. Well, not on the PS3 anyway.

*ACT II (November 2007)*
Harmonix: Okay, we saw how it works, we reverse-engineered it, here, it can work on PS3 too. Here Sony, this will help you.
Sony: Thanks guys.
Activision: NO! BAD SONY! They can't use our guitars!
Harmonix: Why not? You didn't do anything, no code, no specs. We did it all by ourselves, and it's for our game.
Sony: Yeah, what gives? It's better for everyone, and people with Rock Band will buy your game, Activision.
Activision: NO! OUR GUITAR, OUR RULE! And Sony, if you do this, we hate you.
Sony: Maaaaaan... OK, no patch.

*ACT III (the now)*
Activision: Okay Harmonix, you can release your patch.
Harmonix: Well, yes, that was obvious for everybody except you. You saw the money this will generate for you?
Activision: Yes, since you will pay us when you release the patch.
Harmonix: ...what?
Activision: You heard me.
Harmonix: On what grounds? We already paid salaries for the devs who made the patch!
Activision: ah yes, but you use our technology.
Harmonix: WHAT?! You didn't give us anything! We did all by ourselves, and you want us to pay you?
Activision: Yes.
Harmonix: Well, fuck you too.

Give what away? Activision sells GH3 and the GH3 controller. Harmonix just wants to be allowed to release code they've written that works with the GH3 controller.

If Harmonix supports the GH3 guitar, Activision can sell more GH3 guitars, and make a profit doing so.

My whole issue with this is that Harmonix actually made the original guitar hero guitars with Red Octane... Activision didn't do shit for the tech. besides buy Red Octane and now they want to charge for it? I think if developers actually want to spend the time coding a way for different controllers to work with their software, then there shouldn't be an issue.

I think the hypocrisy on the part of Activision/RO pisses me off more than anything, but I've decided I'll bite the bullet and pass on CoD4 (at least new) because of this decision (and I don't even own a PS3).

I agree with Activision: let's face it, almost everyone has now a Guitar Hero guitar but who has (in the USA of course) the Rock Band one?
Why a publisher should allow its hardware to work on a direct competitor software? It's plain stupid: you're helping another publisher in selling more copies of their game. A game that does exactly what your does. And you're also giving away the huge competitor advantage that you have: millions of compatible guitars already in millions of houses.
No way I would give away for free such critical advantage (to be honest, I wouldn't give it away at all. They would have to give me a LOT of money, because you'll have to compensate for future income too).

And that's why you'd lose your customer base. Because customers would rather feel they are getting something for their money besides just being exploited.

Exploited...nice choice of words.

Since we know Activision has NO problem saying they plan on exploiting their game properties why would we think they would treat the customer any different?

to James: GH3 comes with a wireless guitar which neither gh2 or 1 had so that is all activision there. So if they don't want it to work with anything else thats up to them.

also to Kyera:

If you pass on cod4 because of this, you are missing out on a great fucking game for a stupid reason.

Michael Winte works for Activision. Here's the evidence:

http://www.answers.com/topic/tony-hawk-s-project-8-xbox-360-game?cat=entertainment

Go there, search the page for "Michael Winte", and you'll see it'll be under "Company 2: Activision Publishing" -> "Functionality"

Looks like Activision has their own guerrilla defense force.

but customers also need to understand that no company is going to give potentially millions of dollars to there competitor just so that some ppl online will stop saying "oh, how mean, your trying to make money"...customer satisfaction is one thing, but giving up the kind of money we could potentially be talking here is ludacris, if RB is so focused on getting PS3 stuff to work they should negotiate a fair compensation plan and end it at that...just like when sony got sued for using the rumble/tilt controller...they settled the issue and are now using the other companies tech to create the new Duel Analog3...buisness is built on money and compromise.

It's not a good move from any standpoint. People would buy their product to use with guitar hero. Harmonix isn't trying to make their guitar compatible with guitar hero. If it didn't work on the 360 I could understand it but all they are doing is making PS3 owners mad.

I know I will not support activision until they let the patch come out for free. All this does is make me want to support rockband more. If I miss out on some good games so be it.

I do not agree with that one. CoD4 is worth buying. Infinity Ward does not deserve getting hit just because the guys behind Guitar Hero 3 are the same big corp. If anything, boycotting GH3 and any subsequent MTV/Activision Guitar Hero titles until they stop IP whoring is the best move.

Don't tell me you are going to boycott WoW....

You're post shows why people shouldn't bother with a boycott anyway. Simply put, most people can't seem to figure out which companies work on what games.

As you put it 'MTV/Activision'. Now if you mean to avoid both titles you would be fine. But then you said Guitar Hero, so that means Red Octane / Activision. MTV is working with EA and Harmonix on Rock Band.

And people keep getting this stuff wrong again and again. And it seems a lot of people can't even figure out what guitars work with what games.

So a lot of the consumer base looks to lack enough intelligence to even bother about arguing the point any longer. I think the average consumer doesn't care about this, much like many of them don't know their system plays DVD's or Blu-Ray.

We are the minority here...we don't really matter.

That was a brain fart. You are absolutely right, and I know that. I should double check for those silly human errors before I click that darn "Add Your Comments" button.

Eh. I too think that boycotts simply don't do much of anything, but I don't want a fellow gamer to deprive themselves of a really good game because of what is being done on another side of the gaming spectrum. If anything, if he or she must insist on boycotting the CoD series as well, he should boycott a WWII CoD5. That scenario has already been done to death. I'm looking at you, Treyarch.

... I did get that right this time, no?

You got it, and I didn't think you made the same mistake as what I ended up ranting about. It just led to the bigger picture.

I can't say I won't buy CoD4 because I really want to play it. I can say I don't plan to buy any more Guitar Hero games. It isn't because Activision is packed with D-Bags, it's because I played GH3 (that was given to me as a gift) and I really didn't like what was there.

Guitar Hero is going to go the way of Tony Hawk. A series of games that have a hardcore following but are just sort of average and focus more on large combos. You have .skate and Rock Band which deliver a much more accurate version of the type of experience they represent.

Since when did I have good things to say about EA? I feel like a sell out or something.

To everyone who thinks it's ok since it's "Activision's Guitar". Screw that. I didn't sign anything saying I promised not to use the guitar with other games. I could use it as a hammer or a doorstop if I want. It's my damn controller. You can use it to play other (non-music) games, since it's recognized as a regular controller.... people have talked about playing shooters with it and other craziness. If some other game happens to work with it.... there's no reason they should give Activision any money, and there's no reason Activision should be able to stop the game from being distributed.

They arent stopping the game from being distributed. Its their technology, they spent the money to get it approved by microsoft and sony for their game. They sold it as such, it was never sold as just a guitar for all games, it was sold with the guitar hero 3 logo on it. Activision doesn't have to do shit for EA, it was EA's problem that their guitars didnt work and its their problem they didnt have guitar hero 2 on ps3...the guitars (xplorer) work fine on 360 because its their guitar. I could understand if activision blocked sony from releasing a patch for a logitech guitar that was made for guitar hero to work on rock band but not this.

well that is some Grade A bullshit.

its even worse to think that as the games industry continues to grow, more happenings like this are inevitable. itll be like those movies that are great in the first iteration and then people buy the rights and start making TV shows and straight to DVD/made for TV movies with it and ruin the whole thing. i think the mass of bad games is only going to get larger now.

Do you know how many people are bothered by the fact that the Guitar Hero controller doesn't work on Rock Band? Less than 1% because the majority of Guitar Hero fans are casual gamers that would cringe at the thought of spending $180+ dollars on a music game.

And can you really blame Activision? In the short-run they may sell more GH3s but do they really need to? GH3 is sold out everywhere. In the long-runk, Rock Band will be a major competitor for years to come and they need every advantage they can get, they'll need it.

Activision has it all wrong. Good thing for me, I'm an xbox 360 user.

Personally, I planned on buying Rockband only this year. I already bought the game only (not interested in the drum or the microphone for now) and I am enjoying my Rock Band. BUT, after trying the GHIII Les Paul wireless guitar, I really liked it. RESULTS? I bought Guitar Hero III JUST so I could get the guitar and play it with my copy of Rock Band.

That's EXACTLY the kind of extra money Activision could also be doing if they were not so anal about the PS/ situation.

In the end, for all those saying bad things about Microsoft "control" over it's technology, well at least for this case, it served the customer more since everyone has to use MS Licenced wireless technology for the Xbox 360.

Seen a very people say why does this not happen on 360. Microsoft in it's smart wisdom said that all controllers from third parties must work with all games (besides things like steering wheels, arcade sticks) and they have a set protocol that deals with how each controller system should function. They also have an open policy with guitars. Meaning they must work cross game. MS was smart to think of this in advanced and if you don't agree to it then you most likely not getting your game on the 360 (yea MS was really smart here and looking out for gamers)

I'm not sure what sony's deal is but I have a feeling they didn't have a contract and policy in effect like stated above and legally they can't release it. Of course this reverses what I said last week as Sony just can't point a finger and say well MS is doing it so are we. Although if I were Sony I would release the patch anyways. If they do try and sue sony can still try to get some points for letting the consumer choose (and point towards MS) and hopefully that will get the case dropped. And badly damage the PR dept. of activision.

Anyways MS and it's money sack lawyers really paid off here.

This is getting out of hand. Really Sony should step in and take away Activision's license because their controllers do not work to standard. A patch shouldn't be necessary for any game to get a licensed peripheral to function like it's supposed to. Why is Sony letting them get away with this? More proof that Sony doesn't care about their customers.

Its sucks that we can't even play GH1, GH2 and encore on the ps3 because the Activision people are fucknuts and don't want people who SUPPORT THEM using "their" controllers on other games even their own games. Bad bad move and I am not lying when I say no more GH games and no dlc for me. It will also be very hard to buy another activision game period. Activision says "Fuck you people who support us - you will only use our products our way or no way at all"
