So a teen gets drunk enough to literally beat another person to death without being able to stop himself.. and it's because of a video game?

There is so much wrong with this story I could cry.

I don't see the connection. Is there alcohol in Mortal Kombat?

It seems to me that the most sensationalist part of this story is the Joystiq headline. The linked articles use Mortal Kombat in their headline, but I don't see anything that "blames" the crime on the game. The video linked in the Denver story even specifically notes that "Mortal Kombat" refers to rough-housing and NOT "the video game of the same name".

Way to mislead your susceptible audience, Joystiq...

Sounds like a misunderstanding. It sounds like she was saying they had been wrestling AND playing Mortal Kombat on the TV downstairs.

They keep saying wrestling moves as well, and I guess it's a lack of understanding from reporters about the difference in fist fighting and wrestling, but I don't typically associated Mortal Kombat with wrestling.

In any case it's just the girl and boyfriend trying to get out of taking responsibility for their horrendous actions.

Ever watch that movie Arlington road with jeff bridges and that cooky chick and that hockey loving guy whose with Susan Surandon(sp)? In the movie Bridges charactor is giving a class on terrorists and conspiracies. He says that people tend to only want one name/ one reason for whatever happens.
Thats how these things get reported. Had they seen the old Duck Season/Rabbit Season Bugs Bunny cartoon who knows what would have happened.
Lets just hope they ban everything so noone has to teach thier kids anything.

OK, what. The. Hell.

Roberts wasn't even in the room, how is he getting charged; I can understand how the two girls could've been "wrestling", but a 17-year old black guy and a hispanic 7-year old don't appear to be two people who'd wrestle each other so violently. They want to blame the black guy, and the hispanic girl doesn't want to get in trouble so she said he was drunk. In her house? With access to her mother's alcohol? Besides, I don't know in what part of Mortal Kombat you choke a small child by putting an egg yolk in their windpipe while they're unconscious (that's what killed the poor girl); they were trying to make it seem as if she choked to death...

Dude, read the other comments. You aren't supposed to post on serious articles until BEFORE you actually read what happened.

For the media to even put the blame on Mortal Kombat, just shows that the mainstream media is full of it. Just another excuse to blame videogames for voilence. Common Sense anyone?

Ross, buddy, either get more cynical or put on a dunce cap. You actually expect the news media at large to handle any story remotely involving video games with integrity, common sense?

Ok why didnt any of the eye witnesses do anything to stop these assholes form beating the shit out of the little girl?

Better yet why the fuck does someone decide to test out their "karate skills" on a little girl? "The booze made me do it!" Sorry asshole that excuse didnt fly with me when that pedo Foley used it, and its not going to work now.

Try them as adults and give them the death penalty.

Well...If the media blame this on video games, then they have no idea how stupid and unreasonable they are being. It was the alcohol! I mean...would this have happened if alcohol was not involved?...I think not...

You know, when I read this in Google Reader when I got home from work, all I could think was: I didn't know they had RSS feeds back in 1992, and boy do I need to clear out my internet cache.

Next you're going to tell me that Macgyver is blamed for an increase of Swiss Army Knives at schools across America.

This is all the mother's fault! She should have been a better parent! She should have made it clear that no boys allowed! No Drinking! No fighting or Play Fighting! The mom had no right to leave an obviously immture 16 year old with three kids, espcially such young once! 3 year old twins and a 7 year old? Common, I am 27 and I would feel uncomfortable being alone with them and taking care of all of them! She should have been paying a mature adult babysitter to watch akll four kids! Ask a friend, a neighboor, a granparent...whatever! The teenagers obviously had little control, little supervision, lack of understanding of consequesnces of thier actions, little maturity, little knowledge of what to do in case of an emergency and a very bad judgement! And I strongly feel the mother should be held responsible as well! It's like she gave them a loaded gun, then left the house, and is now upset a child is dead! HELLOOOOOO!!!!

I feel there is part of it we have not been told. A (alleged) martial artist of all people should know how dangerous "pretend fighting" is if you're actually smacking people around. Furthermore, if her sister became concerned of for the safety of her sister, she might have done more to protect her. Like, call the police. I think they were beating her up, wich led to an "accidental" death.

Come back when you have stories of teens using bycicle kicks to throw others into hot lava, then we blame Kombat together. Heck, I'll take stories of teens in bycicles kicking others into Hot Pockets at this point.

This totally explains everything. As I child I played duckhunt with my nifty grey blaster and now I have the urge to blast dogs that laugh at me.

I can't believe what gets blamed when stuff goes wrong.

I wonder what guys will be motivated to do if they play MJ's Moonwalker on Genesis?
