This Wednesday: SpongeBob gives XBLA 'Underpants Slam!'
The aquatic antics of our obliviously cheerful pal, SpongeBob SquarePants, have once again been transformed into a video game, this time for Xbox Live Arcade. Though we can't guarantee that "Underpants Slam!" will be any more enjoyable than the unexpected punch to the groin as suggested by the title, we can confidently inform you that it'll be available for download in North America from the Xbox Live Marketplace this coming Wednesday, December 26th.
THQ's "side-scrolling slap-happy extravaganza" absorbs players into SpongeBob's quest to collect King Neptune's 99 pieces of laundry, with garment hunting parties being comprised of up to four players over Xbox Live. If that sounds like F.U.N. to you, prepare to get slammed in the pants for 800 MS Points ($10).

Looks shit.
Is it just me who thinks cartoon games should be in 2D?
Marty @ Dec 21st 2007 1:23PM
No, you're not the only one.
Princess Skittles @ Dec 21st 2007 1:25PM
Or at least cel-shaded.
Mr Khan @ Dec 21st 2007 4:37PM
Or be all based off of SWAT Kats or Megas XLR?
dan stabbingworth @ Dec 21st 2007 1:21PM
Prepare to bow to the power of "Mommie can I please have this please please can I have it? It's only ten dollars!!!"
Top seller confirmed.
Marty @ Dec 21st 2007 1:22PM
At least he's got underpants on... I wouldn't want to know what he'd be slamming if he didn't.
riggs @ Dec 21st 2007 2:24PM
EPIC WIN SIR.
Princess Skittles @ Dec 21st 2007 1:27PM
It really depresses me that what should be an amazing service for indie-style games and genres forgotten by the expectations of big budget explosion games is still being brought down by the American idea of cheap and dirty cash-in products.
At least MS requires that every game has a trial so you can know that most of them are shit.
Mr.ESC @ Dec 21st 2007 1:39PM
I really don't know but how an Indie developer can enter to the Xlive live? I mean the only game I have seen so far that could be considered as Indie is Alien Hominid.
Now I have to say that most xlive games are pretty good if not great but yeah stuff like Wing commander and Battlestar galactica really suck.
Marty @ Dec 21st 2007 1:46PM
Apparently you've never heard of XNA.
Princess Skittles @ Dec 21st 2007 1:53PM
I've heard of XNA but sadly it is not public and they have yet to release something from the service to the "retail" side of XBLA.
My point is that even the big companies should be using XBLA (or other download services) as an opportunity to take chances. Instead, most of the content is what I would consider "safe."
Mr.ESC @ Dec 21st 2007 1:53PM
What is this XNA you speak of?
Princess Skittles @ Dec 21st 2007 1:59PM
XNA is a Windows/Xbox 360 game development platform. Kind of a "create a game" kit. I believe for a subscription fee ($80 or $100 a year, ouch), you can have access to games made by individuals (not companies) to play on your 360.
Marty @ Dec 21st 2007 2:04PM
XNA is public, anyone who pays the fee can get the kit and start developing. This doesn't necessarily mean that your game will be on XBLA, but if it's a good game, and makes a decent splash among other devs, you can bet it'll be a strong candidate to get there.
dan stabbingworth @ Dec 21st 2007 3:33PM
The under-utilization of XNA is terrible. Games like Knytt Stories are what I want on XBLA, not retarded shit like Spongebob, Yaris, and (just for giggles) Space Giraffe.
Mr.ESC @ Dec 21st 2007 3:55PM
Well to be honest Yaris while sucky at least is free and better than In-game advertising ☻ but then again I rather have cupons.
FOXHOUND @ Dec 21st 2007 1:40PM
Now if it was Spongebob add-on for ROCKBAND so I can imitate those 'nifty' heavy metal videos on YouTube, I'd conside--- nahh.
B33b3s @ Dec 21st 2007 1:45PM
All I ask for is Omega 5, N+... two games that were already supposed to be out by now. But do I get them? NOOOOOOOOO, I get a shoddy game about sponges with a juvenile sense of humor, a broken soccer game, a game that may have been great in 1981 but utterly sucks by today standards, a dungeon crawler without decent multilayer, and a racing game that no one's ever heard of. The list goes on, but I feel my rage subsiding in favor of the flash version of N.
dan stabbingworth @ Dec 21st 2007 3:36PM
Exactly. Why is it that after two years of development developers can't deliver Geometry Wars quality games and MS can't release more than two (and mostly one) game a week?
Abscissa @ Dec 21st 2007 2:40PM
Plankton is huge all of a sudden.
Ace @ Dec 21st 2007 3:59PM
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that this is obviously some crazy parallel universe where Plankton is taller than SpongeBob.
... look at him.
... HE'S FREAKING EYE IS THE SIZE OF A MELLON!
Mr.ESC @ Dec 21st 2007 4:10PM
Maybe the game takes place after that episode where Spongebob shrank the whole city using Merman’s belt.
Ludwig Kietzmann @ Dec 21st 2007 4:18PM
And what a fine episode that was.
mietha CAG @ Dec 21st 2007 4:11PM
It can't be worse than the Shrek game... right?
Mr Khan @ Dec 21st 2007 4:39PM
There's always ET...
Abscissa @ Dec 22nd 2007 8:24PM
Most people complaining about the ET game have never even played it. It really wasn't as bad as everyone says. The biggest problem by far was the fact that they manufactured more carts than there were systems in existence. That's what made it such a loss for the company.
bigsofty @ Dec 21st 2007 9:35PM
Knit is boring to the point of watching paint dry...
