Epic still hasn't finished up the tools that will allow modders to make their Unreal Tournament 3 maps work on the PS3, but they've taken it upon themselves to pick one from the PC community and "cook" the code so it could work on Sony's box. Players can now download DM-Shrine, made by English graphic designer Thomas Browett, here or here.
The directions for getting it onto your PS3 (which we've lovingly placed after the jump) are not exactly user friendly, but shouldn't be too big of a hurdle. The one issue is that you are going to need someway to get it onto the system, either via a memory card or a USB memory stick. We know we're not game designers, and we think free content's great, but is there really no more elegant way of handling this?
[Via 1UP]
Here is how to install UT3 mods on your PlayStation 3.
1. Unzip the file to the root directory of any memory card that is readable by your PlayStation 3. It is already in the proper directory structure but, just in case, the path and filename need to be: ps3\savedata\blus30086-modimport\userdata.jam
2. Boot up Unreal Tournament 3 on your PS3
3. Go to the "Community" menu
4. Choose "My Content"
5. Press the [SQUARE] button to "Import Mod"
6. Follow the directions on the screen to import it from your memory device.
Once imported you'll be able to see the map in your list of Deathmatch maps. You'll be able to host the map and join servers that are hosting the map. All UT3 mods install this same way. If this were a mutator it would show up in the mutator list. If it were a gametype it would show up in gametype lists, etc.

I hope they create a program that makes it easier than that.
This is kind of like trying to put video on the PSP. They tout these features, but then make you jump through hoops in order to do it.

Agreed. It's cool that they let you do it; it just shouldn't be quite that hard.

Hehehe. As a pc gamer I just love the thought of legions of console gamers scratching their heads trying to figure out the concept of subfolders.

What is hard about that? Just plug your flash memory into the USB socket and import the mod.
You people are spoilt. Buy a AIBO to do it for you if you are that lazy.

i didnt think it looked difficult at all. maybe the file path but if your messing around with computer mods i would think you would be able to understand file paths.
and the PSP videos and crap are alot easier now with all the firmware upgrades, just drag and drop in the VIDEO folder.

Not quite free. You'll have to buy a Memory Card or USB Memory stick. Not much to pay, but still a few bucks to get free maps onto your PS3 that you already paid out the ass for.

or if you have a digital camera you could create the folder structure there and then import export using the camera memory.
Worked for me with the themes.

Seriously... who doesn't own a USB thumb drive? Or couldn't break a ten to get one? You can get a 1 gig thumb drive for $6.50 on newegg.

i have so many USB flash drives, SD cards, and Memory Sticks laying around this wont cost me any more than ive already spent. i dont even have to buy two copies of the game because someone will post the PC mods on the internet anyway.
and like someone already mentioned, if you dont have any extra memory cards laying around hit up Newegg.com. everything is cheap there.

But wait, aren't you SDFer's always itemizing the cost comparison agains the 360, adding in a bunch of optional features not everyone buys?
Looks like a memory stick needs be added to the PS3 side.

nope, we add stuff that the ps3 has that the 360 can have,
the 360 doesnt support any user generated mods so:
1. we dont need to add $10 for a usb drive (not to mention every thumb drive works anyway... not just sony branded one's)
2. if any of the generated maps come out on XBLM, we might have to add the cost of those...

Easier?! Unzip it to your USB drive and then hit square in the game? What do you want it to do, leap from the depths of the internet into your UT game automagically? Seriously, folks, that's TWO steps, that IS easy.

It's actually cheaper(here in USA, anyway)to just hook up a card reader & memory card instead of going out and buying oodles of thumb/flashdrives. At least then, you could just insert a card of any size and storage is a lot easier. And for those who have PS3s without the memory card ports... this is a good, inexpensive option to consider.
Lastly, ALL PlayStation3 units released thus far have USB ports. Hell, releasing anything console/handheld-wise these days without some kind of USB access or adapter is just plain foolish.

"ROOT DIRECTORY? WHUT?" *begins jabbing forehead with USB cable* "Dahhurr..." "THIS AM TOO HARD!"
and then they use an actual PC...
"DAHH WHAT!? *rapidly hits head on wall*"
The general reaction I'm getting from people with these instructions! This is still generally less painful than what a lot of PC games would make you do.

Hard? The fuck?! Have you EVER used technology?
I mean, the manual even walks you through this. Unzip the mod into your root directory via flash card OR thumb drive. Plug said media into your PS3.
In the community settings of the root directory of UT3, there is a Mod menu. Press SQUARE when in the list to search for mods. Select the mod, bammo, installed!
How much easier can it be? I mean, you cannot save directly onto your hard drive from the PS3 browser and obviously usermods won't be going through Sony certification to wind up on the store. This is easy stuff to install.

But you CAN save things from the PS3 browser straight to the hard drive. I do it with photos all the time. The fact that the PS3 does not have a means of saving something to the proper directory for use by Unreal Tournament is downright LAUGHABLE.
Imagine if you wanted to put a map on your PC. Your PC has an Internet connection, and a browser. But you can't use the map directly on your PC. Imagine you have to go to ANOTHER PC to download the map, then put it on some kind of 'floppy disk', carry it over the sneaker net to your gaming PC and then proceed to install it. That would be crazy talk, but that's just the kind of thing you need to do on the PS3.

Apparently some of these retards will be relying on JOINING modded games to acquire their mods.

The issue isn't that it is DIFFICULT to jump through these hoops. The issue is that you have to jump through hoops at all.
You are asking console users to have a PC and to do a little memory card dance. As a consumer device, users should be able to download the mods from right within the game, or from within the Playstation store.
The PS3 has a web browser built-in, but isn't able to download the mod itself? Come on now, the PS3 is supposed to be a supercomputer, but it can't do something as simple as unzipping and installing a mod.
This solution could have been much friendlier. The more steps that someone has to go through means that fewer and fewer people will use the feature.

I think we may see something like that eventually. That is how the Themes on the PS3 work. You can get official themes from the store and sites like AllPS3Themes.com can be accessed via the PS3's web browser and the themes there automatically download and install when you click on the download links.

I hear that Microsoft has a console that can connect directly to the internets.
Perhaps Sony should look into that for their next console?

Just to make sure, I went to Halo 3 and downloaded a few forge maps, and game variants; and sure enough it worked without needing a memory card.
What's the point of the web browser on the PS3 exactly?
Why exactly can't I browse to Planet Unreal and save maps to the PS3 directly?
