wow. color me impressed. that certainly could be the future of gaming and the fact that it could be done RIGHT NOW on consoles gets me all kinds of excited. how hard would it be for a game developer to make a Wii game and include a plastic shell to sit your Wiimote on the TV in place of the sensor bar and include some glasses or a headband with IR sensors. Nintendo would be crazy not to at least send this guy a letter telling him to keep up the good work or better yet give him a job.

this could seriously be the rebirth of console FPS's as we know it. you wanna look around a corner, then look. or a football game with helmet vision or something. this has really got me all kinds of excited. JUMP ON THIS NINTENDO!

Gee, it seems a lot of people havent seen VR displays before...

Never read the story posted here on joystiq about a developer saying the next big thing in motion sensing and interactivity would be done with a camera?

It was mean presicely for this. This guy is usin the wii IR Camera, but you can sure as hell develope something with a different type of camera.

And Im pretty sure Nintendo must have known about this at some point prior to releasing the wii, but they chose not to implement it. Perhaps because not many genres are very well suited for this, but first person experience ones.

They should implement this tech for FPS, instead of stupid things like the wii zapper. Im not sure how this tech would fare in an actual 3D enviroment constantly changing like in a FPS, and you would need to always play in a set position to ensure max effectiveness. Im sure fast paced games like Unreal would tire the hell out of someone in minutes XD

of course we've heard of VR displays before but what you seem to be missing is that all the technology needed to do this is already included in your Wii. there is no real extra implementation in the form of a stronger camera needed, just a couple more plastic controller shells and an extra Wiimote which just about everyone has anyway. thats why everyone is so excited. now like you mentioned, this isnt going to lend too well to many genres except FPS's, but think of online multiplayer FPS's using this tech. the only other thing i could think of was helmet vision in a football game.

this could be huge for the FPS genre, and the craziest thing is, all three of the now-gen consoles could support this since they all have motion sensing cameras at their disposal. even PSP lol.

That is absolutely awesome. Man, I would love to play new games like this. Even so-so games would at least be cool to look at. Aaaah, I can see it now: The Super Suntan Lotion Rubbing Simulation Game with motion sensitive technology and VR Head Tracking on Wii. Fantastic video.

I believe we've found the missing link for true 3D immersion, besides wiimote flailing.

Actually no. Head tracking only works well if the camera is first person (FPS type games) and even then only gives a certain amount of a 3 dimensional feel. True 3D is what gaming needs as it is independent of the camera perspective and is viewable to everyone in front of the screen (with glasses). If you've seen Beowulf in 3D you'll realize the huge potential in modern 3D processing- Samsung even is making HDTV's with built in 3D.

Head tracking is very limited 3D tech. True 3D is the way to go.

Sorry, I'd never heard out those technologies. >_> I'm pretty sure that SOME consoles would include such features in the next generation of console gaming, but with Nintendo's current strategy, it's all about making gaming accessible with that "revolutionary" factor.

But it's true that since it only works for 1 player, it's a bit of a buzzkill.

On a deeper thought though, this is perhaps the advantage of console game development over PC game development: creating standard hardware peripherals has a greater impact on the industry. Even though this tech is already available on PC, it might never become standard whereas if it is available on console, there's a better chance that it's going to become a developed standard (just like rumble!).

You know, I was gonna watch this video here, but then this really large annoying flash pop-up ad appeared and covered half the screen. It would not go away when I tried to close it. Hence it looks like I'm gonna have to go somewhere else to watch this video. Sorry Joystiq.

P.S. - The lesson we learned today is this: Ads that expand to cover the screen force traffic away from you.

So, if I have one Wiimote as a gun, wii glasses to track my head, and the wii balance board to control my movement... then I essentially have the coolest FPS controls ever? right?

Normally I don't waste my time posting on these because it's a pain, but this is ridiculous. Heres how this needs to go down. Nintendo needs to see this if they don't already have it as an ace in the hole. Then they need to release a kit and have certain games developed just for this technology. The best part about this is how simple it is (which fit's in with Nintendo's current game plan). The LED glasses converted to IR, pure genius. If Nintendo doesn't capitalize on this they don't deserve to make games. Though judging by they're online gaming record they're pretty slow to the punch and very lackluster once the punch connects. The only dumb thing I see about this kid is that he is showing this off to the public. Should be developing his own version for PC or somthin.

protip;
1. enter any 3d modelling software

2. hold down mousebutton in preview mode

3. move the mouse while you move your head in the opposite direction.

4. OH WOW!!! IT'S 3D!!

nothing new here, but it's cool because he uses the wiimote. go nintendo!

Exactly.

This is NOT 3D, this is simply the camera controlled by your head's movement rather than by your thumbstick. It's still a cool idea, but not nearly as groundbreaking as commenters here want to believe.
