You just need to follow the instructions like ridiculously carefully. I had to tried to to wing and it and simply failed. CoD4 runs beautifully now.

I had that once. I installed Vista (oh so crap) and realised it cut performance in games. Couldn't format it so I ended up having to format my whole drive which meant a Leopard reinstall too.
You might have to do that :(
But anything is worth it for Orange Box.

I bought the Orange Box again, even though I own it on 360 and Half Life 2 and Episode One on my computer just so I can download portal maps and play TF2 without all the freakin' lag! I thought paying 50$ a month for Xbox Live was to bring me a good service. Stalker for 20$ is also tempting.

A gamepad would be a fine idea. Psychonauts has functional mouse and keyboard controls, but many times you will find yourself frustrated when you wanted to do one thing, but messed up because you didn't have quite as much precision. The game was really designed with a gamepad in mind. I suggest one that has two shoulder buttons, like the ps2. If you have an xbox 360, you might want to invest in a wired controller, as it can be used with both the 360 and the pc via usb.

This is crap. I already have HL2, HL2:EP1 and I bought Portal alone. Even now the prices don't justify to buy only Episode 2 because it'll be much pricier than the Box combined, which I already bought for Xbox 360 (and loving it). No deal, Valve.
