The holiday season isn't just relegated to the real world. Robert "Sabrehawk" Cox of the WarCry Network has a new article up detailing how many of the popular MMOs celebrate the season. Anarchy Online, World of Warcraft, the EverQuest series and a handful of others are there. For those handful of players still involved in Star Wars Galaxies, there's always Wookie Life Day.
One MMO missing for Cox's list is Guild Wars, and our sister site Massively has the information on their Wintersday celebration.

Yes, but the article in question appears to be focused on popular MMO games. It's arguable that Final Fantasy XI, Phantasy Star Universe, Tabula Rasa and many others are niche MMOs with only limited appeal. Still, I would have liked some mention of the fact that it's been Christmas continuously in the Xbox server for Phantasy Star Online for the last three years.

FFXI has an active subscriber base of about 500k, with 64-128k people on at any given time, but they mention Starwars Galaxy which has never peaked over 300k total and same with Everquest 2. Also what about LOTR: Online, not sure how many they have but that game sold a bunch, and last I read though not sure they had upwards of a million subscribers.

Guild Wars is an MMO? Like Diablo 2 is. Or rather, isn't.

When I saw the last sentence, all I could think is that the debate of whether Guild Wars is, or is not, an MMO will begin quite soon.
Thankfully it's Christmas night and everyone's too drunk and/or sleepy from all the food they just ate to argue.. hopefully. Anyhoo, no, Guild Wars is not an MMORPG. :P
Only time it's massively multiplayer is when you're in a town.

Yeah. Back when I played, at least, they really put a lot of effort into special events. I still have a bunch of screens of the last day of Beta, with the fireworks and the exploding gnomes and that one guy who kept dying and coming back to life in the middle of town.
For the second game, I really hope they improve on the GW model without changing what was great about it.

MMO have great Christmas. I remember they put on treasure hunts and everyone got gifts in their inventories. Slaying reindeer made the grind a little more fun for a little while. And fireworks. Good times.

Even though Christmas = family time, such events bring cheer to the mmo community, giving us activities and goals to do altogether. :)
Plus on a deeper aspect, it provides us an impression of an ever evolving world on which we do have an impact.
... Crap I miss playing GW.

The MMO I used to play (Baram / Nexus:TK) used to give out Santa hats and allowed players to wrap items in gift boxes for use in exchanging gifts.
Ofcourse.... I never had time to play at Christmas, but atleast the lonely people out there have somewhere to go, I guess
Merry Christmas
/goes back to playing Warhawk/

And when more MMOs are based in the southern hemisphere, shall we have snow for July?
