(1) Paint a Wii (2) Sell it for $250 + tax (3) Buy a Wii
While this doesn't answer the question we're guessing most people have about procuring a Wii – that being, "Where the crap can you find one?" – it does help out the starving artists amongst you with the slightly more sensitive topic of: "How the crap did you afford one?"
While it's not for us to judge your chosen profession and its financial rewards (we'll leave that job up to the millionaires in the comments section), we are here to share interesting video game info. Take the case of WantsForSale.com, a site run by two NYC-based artists who simply paint things they want and then sell those paintings to pay for the pictured item. For example: painting of Wii is sold for $270.92 (that's $249.99 + 8.375% NYC sales tax) which, in turn, is used to purchase a Wii. As for the buyer, we're guessing the painting ended up as some poor kid's last-minute Wii replacement gift.
"Open it, son. Look, it's a Wii!"
"I hate you, Dad."

Just goes to show money doesn't buy you happiness, but selling paintings does!
robotrock @ Dec 26th 2007 11:14PM
I need to paint a big truck full of money.
Wickedneoq @ Dec 26th 2007 11:25PM
Note to self: Get artistic talent and paint a Ferrari FXX.
Grey Acumen @ Dec 27th 2007 12:35AM
@wickedneoq - Oh, come on. Just look at that 'painting'
It's pretty obvious that artistic talent just doesn't factor into this deal
mrdelayer @ Dec 26th 2007 11:40PM
I'm surprised no one's made this joke yet...
"Ceci n'est pas une Wii."
Mr. P @ Dec 27th 2007 12:06AM
Have you seen the paintings they've actually sold? I can't believe people buy that crap.
zuburi @ Dec 27th 2007 12:51AM
Agreed. Some douche actually paid $95 for a picture of a salon chair so one of those talentless hacks could get a new haircut.
And it says they actually sold the fucking wii painting! Everytime I see something like this it makes me both angry and jealous - like the guy that sold his "kid's" copy of Rock Band for Christmas for a shitload of money.
Durinthal @ Dec 27th 2007 1:26AM
If people want to buy it, why not? Capitalism works, whether or not it makes sense in some cases.
ZeroCorpse @ Dec 27th 2007 12:52AM
They aren't painters, that's for sure.

Come On Now. You guys know how it works. Even the worst painting in the world would be worth millions, why? Cause it's the worst painting in the world.
This is the beauty of ART.

Will @ Dec 27th 2007 1:46AM
This would almost be cute and classy if not for two things. One, their artwork.. sucks. Two, they do this constantly. At this point instead of it being a deep want that they ask for someone to buy their artwork of what they truly desire, it looks more like whenever they're in the mood for something they sketch it out and put it on their site. "A slice of pizza" "A new bikini" "An iPhone"
I might as well just blog about how I'd love an EeePC until some guy from New York buys me one.
Will @ Dec 27th 2007 1:47AM
P.S.: If anyone who reads this would like to buy me an EeePC, feel free. I'm willing to draw it if necessary. I'll even draw it in the color I want.
Will @ Dec 27th 2007 3:11AM
P.P.S.: You guys missed the pun opportunity in the second to last line: Wiiplacement gift!
ThornedVenom @ Dec 27th 2007 3:12AM
yeah right... I highly doubt that they'd sell me the painting if I offered them a wii instead of 270 bucks.
If I got anything I drew, I'd probably get a bunch of angels, demons and dragons. But no furries nor weird rule 34 sex.
Mez Jr @ Dec 27th 2007 12:04PM
It says on the site they would trade for the exact item they want.
ThornedVenom @ Dec 27th 2007 3:18AM
You know what? Screw that, I'm off to paint an Internet.

It's kinda like that movie Weird Science, minus the idiocy.
Someone needs to paint a supermodel, pronto.

WHAT??! **drops dead**
Mez Jr @ Dec 27th 2007 11:55AM
I think this is really interesting, the art has a definite style and its an interesting concept.
In art its not always about who does something best its about being a pioneer, plus ever since the invention of photography, realism has no longer been a necessity, only that you understand the feeling.
CountZero @ Dec 27th 2007 12:08PM
A lot of you guys seem to be missing the point when you're complaining about it being "bad art." It's not just the paintings (which are minimalist but cute and tone-appropriate), it's the entire project that's the work of art. The paintings, the website, even the act of selling them are all part of the art. They're making representations of their desires and then transforming them into the genuine articles. And people are buying these paintings not for the technical skill involved in making them, but to be a part of the project.
I love the idea, it's the kind of thing I wish I'd thought of myself. The only problem is, aren't they technically losing money on these? If the paintings sell only for the cost of whatever item it is they painted, they still had to buy the paint and canvas...

I'm so glad that gaming steve is back. He always had some of the most insightful and intelligent podcasts.

There's a difference between art and a doofus with a paintbrush.
Rob Accomando @ Dec 27th 2007 8:17PM
I don't get how people are paying that much for what looks exactly like CLIP ART. I could do that with my eyes closed but never in a million years would think poeple would pay more than $1 for it.
